Shekhar Kapur shares rare moment of A.R. Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber creating music together
Filmmaker
Shekhar Kapur
took to social media to share a rare and cherished memory of A.R. Rahman and
Andrew Lloyd Webber
creating magical music together on the same piano - a moment that blended two worlds of musical genius.
Taking to Instagram, Shekhar Kapur shared a rare, unseen throwback photo featuring himself with Rahman and Webber during the world announcement of Bombay Dreams-the first-ever Bollywood musical to make it to London's West End and later Broadway in New York. Reflecting on the journey, Kapur called his life "one huge adventure," urging everyone to embrace uncertainty and spontaneity.
In a thought-provoking caption, he wrote, "Life has been one huge adventure.
But how does adventure happen unless you actively open yourself to the adventure of life? And to open yourself to adventure, you have to fight the greatest human failing of all. The addiction to certainty. The addiction to control."
Shekhar Kapur went on to reveal how "Bombay Dreams" was born from a casual lunchtime conversation with Andrew Lloyd Webber. That chance remark soon evolved into a groundbreaking musical collaboration.
The photo he shared was taken at a party held at Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Hotel, where Rahman and Webber sat together at the same piano, creating music on the spot-an unforgettable moment in East-meets-West creative synergy.
"Bombay Dreams was born of one chance lunchtime remark by me to Andrew Lloyd Webber .. out of which this picture was taken at the world announcement of the project .. at a party in Mumbai's iconic Taj Mahal Hotel ..
and where A R Rahman and Andrew Lloyd Webber played together on the same piano .. creating amazing music on the go ..One chance remark .. led to the first 'Bollywood' musical ever on the West End in London and in Broadway in New York .
.One chance remark! #andrewlloydwebber #arrahmaan #BombayDreams #westend #London #musical," added the director.
'Bombay Dreams' is a vibrant stage musical inspired by Bollywood, featuring music by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Don Black. The script was penned by Meera Syal and Thomas Meehan, with Andrew Lloyd Webber backing the original production. It premiered in London in 2002, enjoying a successful two-year run before making its way to Broadway in 2004.

Coolie: ‘Alela Polema' in trailer has a crazy story? Anirudh reveals it has Greek connection
Superstar Rajinikanth is set to dazzle audiences with his upcoming film, Coolie, which is scheduled for release on August 14, 2025. In anticipation of the movie's release, renowned composer Anirudh Ravichander has opened up about the intriguing phrase 'Alela Polema' featured in the theme music. The question arises: Does this phrase have a genuine meaning, or is it simply a playful creation by the composer? Here's what he had to say. Anirudh Ravichander reveals what 'Alela Polema' means Anirudh Ravichander appeared at a promotional event alongside Shruti Haasan and Nagarjuna Akkineni. During his conversation with the press, the musician said, 'When I was working on the teaser (trailer)... I was just singing the lines, and I tend to go a little crazy inside my studio. I'll be like blabbering and shouting.' 'So when the line came, I was like Alela Polema…Alela Polema, Allleee! Then I sent it to Lokesh, and I was expecting him to ask what it meant. But he was like, 'That is my favorite part of the teaser.' That is the kind of bond we share, and it was just a random, gibberish word,' Anirudh added. The rockstar composer continued, 'Apparently, I saw something online. In Greek, it means 'I am ready to fight', but I didn't plan it like that. That's what it means in Greek, I don't know the language, for me it was just random.' His charisma and aura just outstanding: Nagarjuna and 'Coolie' cast on Rajinikanth
Mumbai, Renowned south actor Nagarjuna says working with superstar Rajinikanth for their upcoming film "Coolie" was a fantastic experience. His charisma and aura just outstanding: Nagarjuna and 'Coolie' cast on Rajinikanth The film is set to release in theatres on Thursday and is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, known for projects such as "Kaithi", "Leo" and "Aviyal". Backed by Sun Pictures, "Coolie" also stars Aamir Khan and Satyaraj in pivotal roles. Nagarjuna attended the music launch event of their film on Monday in Mumbai. He was accompanied by his co-star Shruti Haasan and music composer Anirudh Ravichander. The actor, who essays the role of a villain in the film, said Rajinikanth has also helped him with the Tamil dialogues. "Working with Rajini sir is fantastic. Something I will take back home. That man's charisma and aura on set are just outstanding. It was really nice that he helped me with Tamil dialogues and guided me. Though I played the most negative role, I took back something very positive with myself after doing the film," he told reporters. Asked what made him say "yes" to a negative role, Nagarjuna said he has mostly played good roles, which became, to some extent, boring for him. "Because I was always playing good all the time, it was getting a little boring. So, I thought, let me play the baddy. Completely enjoyed it, very liberating," he said. But the actor admitted it took him some time to be convinced by Kanagaraj. "I made Lokesh work for it. I had to make sure that I was doing the right thing by playing bad... It took almost 7 to 8 meetings before he convinced me," he said. " straight up baddy. There's no reason why I'm bad. He's that kind of person... He doesn't give a damn about anybody and that's why I enjoyed the role. There was no inhibition, nothing to hold back. And I had Anirudh backing me up with his music," he added. Haasan said working with Rajinikanth was a dream-come-true moment for her. "His aura is like that. The minute you encounter him for the first time, you're like, 'Wow, ok, this is like a powerhouse full on'. But I think it was when I saw his face up close, I was like, 'Oh my God, that is Rajini sir," she said. "It was never something that I even considered. When Lokesh came to me with this, it was already a dream come true. And then as the cast kept growing and people like Nag sir, and then Sathyaraj sir, Soubin sir, Aamir sir, Upendra sir, like the list goes on and on... It really was a great learning experience, truly, as well as the fact that there was just so much good energy all around." "Everyone was so diligently working on their parts, and they were so passionate about it, and I think that credit goes to our director for being able to pull everything together so positively and successfully," she said. Distributed by Pen Studios, the film features Rajinikanth as Deva, a former gold smuggler out for revenge. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.
