Massachusetts man accused of smashing car with hatchet appears in court for dangerousness hearing
The man accused of attacking a car with a hatchet in Boston last month appeared in court Thursday for a dangerousness hearing. Andrew Oprian, 27, of Belmont, began wiping tears from his eyes while the prosecution showed shocking video of him taking a hatchet to someone's car in an alleged fit of road rage. It happened on May 17, and now he faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and destruction of property. Video shows the victim's car crashed into a pole on Commonwealth Avenue in Brighton. The victim told police he was driven off of the road. Oprian can be seen on video taking a hatchet to the person's car. WBZ learned in court that Oprian was part of a similar incident in 2021. Psychologist testifies He has been seeing a psychologist off and on since then. That man, Dr. Eric Brown, testified that Oprian was diagnosed and hospitalized with bipolar disorder, and that at times he does not recognize what he has done. Andrew Oprian, 27, of Belmont appears in court for a dangerousness hearing after he was accused of attacking a car with a hatchet. CBS Boston Dr. Brown says Oprian is on numerous medications but has been resisting it in recent years. He says last year, Andrew's friend passed away and ever since he has been in manic states. Brown testified that at times Oprian is getting in skirmishes with people. The prosecution says in March, Oprian told police he was in the mafia and had an AK-47. Brown told the court Oprian is only a risk to himself or others if he isn't on medication and in routine therapy to stay on it. Oprian will be back in court on Monday, and the judge is expected to have an answer.

Hatchet-wielding man faces charges after Boston road rage attack caught on video
Police in Boston, Massachusetts, identified a man allegedly caught on camera hitting someone's car with a hatchet in an apparent road rage incident. The Boston Police Department announced that 27-year-old Andrew Oprian had been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and willful and malicious destruction of property, according to Boston 25. Police said that Oprian allegedly chased someone with his car "at a high rate of speed" on May 16, causing the other person to crash. After allegedly causing the other car to crash, Oprian got out of his car and assaulted the victim. Oprian went on to repeatedly smash the victim's car with a hatchet, breaking the windows and windshield, according to police. Video released by the Boston Police Department shows an individual repeatedly hitting the car, which crashed into a tree. Matt Silva, who witnessed the incident, told Boston 25 the victim had no idea why the suspect was following him. "He had no idea why the guy had been following him. He had no clue. He was shocked," Silva said. "As soon as he sticks his head out of the car and pulls his key out, some random dude from behind him starts swinging a hatchet at him," he added. Silva said the suspect looked like he was enraged and couldn't be reasoned with at the time. The suspect allegedly chased the victim on the sidewalk with a hatchet, according to witnesses.

Boston police identify hatchet-wielding suspect wanted in violent road rage attack
Authorities have identified the hatchet-wielding suspect who is wanted in connection with an apparent road rage attack in Boston that was caught on video. The Boston Police Department announced Wednesday that an arrest has been issued for 27-year-old Andrew Oprian, of Belmont, on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and willful and malicious destruction of property. The warrant was obtained from Brighton District Court, and Oprian is still at large. The incident occurred in the area of 1032 Commonwealth Avenue in the city's Brighton neighborhood just before 11:45 p.m. on Friday, May 16. Police said the suspect was chasing after the victim at a high rate of speed, causing the victim to crash. The suspect then allegedly exited his pickup truck with a hatchet in hand, assaulted the victim, and vandalized their vehicle. Cellphone video released by Boston police on Sunday shows the suspect repeatedly swinging the hatchet, smashing the windows and windshield of a Toyota Prius. 'As soon as he sticks his head out of the car and pulls his key out, some random dude from behind him starts swinging a hatchet at him,' Matt Silva, who witnessed the incident, told Boston 25. Silva said that Oprian appeared enraged and couldn't be reasoned with. After the incident, the suspect fled on Babcock Street in the direction of Brookline, according to investigators. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for a Belmont man accused of smashing the window of a car in a violent road rage confrontation on Friday night. 27-year-old Andrew Oprian is being charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and willful and malicious destruction of property, according to Boston Police. The warrant was obtained from the Brighton District Court and Oprian is still at large. The confrontation occurred around 11:45 p.m. on May 16 in the area of 1032 Commonwealth Avenue. What started as a report of a motor vehicle accident quickly escalated. Boston 25 News spoke with a witness who said a victim driving a Toyota Prius was being followed by a suspect in a pickup truck at a high rate of speed. 'He had no idea why the guy had been following him. He had no clue. He was shocked,' said witness Matt Silva. Cell phone released by Boston Police on Sunday shows the suspect repeatedly swinging the hatchet, smashing the windows and windshield of the Prius. 'As soon as he sticks his head out of the car and pulls his key out, some random dude from behind him starts swinging a hatchet at him.' Silva told Boston 25 News that the man with the hatchet appeared enraged and couldn't be reasoned with. Witnesses told police they saw the suspect chasing the victim along the sidewalk armed with the sharp weapon.
