The Futures Game is a chance for MLB to showcase the game's best prospects in a game setting. It's like the All-Star Game for prospects and it's wonderful. Sometimes, the offense can be missing because the pitchers throwing have such high octane, it can overpower hitters. Nevertheless, the Phillies are sending two representatives to the game. Andrew Painter is the big name here. He's the team's top prospect and arguably the best pitching prospect in the game. The anticipation for his arrival is still somewhat tepid thanks to the stretch of domination the rotation is currently on, but when he does arrive, it will be an exciting day. We already know Painter is going to miss the game because the team wants to keep him on schedule. A shame as he likely would have started the game, but the bigger picture is more important to a team that has World Series aspirations. Advertisement Eduardo Tait is the team's #4 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and is showing why. Through 65 games, Tait has a .256/.328/.449 line with ten home runs and 42 RBI. He's shown improvement behind the plate with his throwing and receiving and looks like the heir apparent to J.T. Realmuto in the big leagues. That could be a few years off still as he's only 18 (!) years old, but he's performing well in Clearwater and there really isn't much in his path to block him. After a promising start to his MLB career, Mick Abel struggled too much and was sent back down to the minor leagues to rediscover his command. Amid such a roster move, the plan for another pitcher prospect became a little clearer. Advertisement Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer shared Dave Dombrowski's thoughts on the Phillies' top prospect, Andrew Painter, amid his stint in the minor leagues. "He's been good but not great," Dombrowski said. "That's the way I would describe it. His velocity's good; his pitches are good. Probably doesn't have quite the same command as he normally has, which sometimes happens. It takes a little while to get back when you're coming off a couple of years down. But he's touching 100." Painter hasn't been his best in Triple-A this season. He has a 4.45 ERA in 56.2 innings pitched, with 64 strikeouts and a 1.34 WHIP. While he's not been his best, Dombrowski pointed out one area that matters a lot to him with Painter. "And he's healthy," Dombrowksi said, "Which is the most important thing." Coming off Tommy John surgery, which cost him the entire 2024 season, his health is a major concern for the Phillies. Painter, being healthy heading into the All-Star break, is a great sign for the top prospect. Dombrowski alluded to his plan with Painter, and it includes zero intention to use him out of the bullpen with the team's stacked rotation. "We have not discussed it," Dombrowski said, "And I don't think we would bring him up as a bullpen guy coming off an injury." If Dombrowski and the Phillies don't plan to use him in the bullpen, Painter is going to have a tough time cracking the MLB roster. With the current rotation being the best in baseball, it'd take an injury or major struggles from a starter for Painter to get a spot in the rotation. Abel was sent back down to Triple-A, and with Aaron Nola still out, Painter does have a spot on the roster. But, as the plan is to shut him down for the All-Star break, Painter will have to wait until the second half of July to make his debut at the earliest. But, with Abel back down in Triple-A and Nola banged up, Painter's chances of getting the call to the big leagues are better than they have ever been. He proposes that the Phillies send a haul of Andrew Painter and Justin Crawford to the Minnesota Twins for Byron Buxton. Investing in one player is a lot, but Schoenfield explains why such a deal would work. "Philadelphia has a lot riding on 2025 given the age of its lineup," Schoenfield writes, "And executive Dave Dombrowski knows how to go all-in. In this case, it would mean parting with one of the top pitching prospects in the game in Painter, plus a promising young outfield hitting well in Triple-A." He would be a massive upgrade in the outfield, and he's the righty bat the team is looking for. So far this season, Buxton has 20 home runs and a .270 batting average in 73 games. His .879 OPS would be the highest among Phillies outfields by a wide margin, and he'd be a much-needed power presence in the lineup. Advertisement Kyle Schwarber is the only Phillies player with at least 20 home runs, at 27. Trea Turner and Nick Castellanos are tied for second with just 11 home runs. Adding Buxton's 20 home runs would be a huge help. While Schoenfield has the Phillies giving up a lot, it'd be worth it. Buxton, under team control through 2028, would be the exact addition the team needs to make for a World Series push over the next few seasons. Buxton, being an outfielder, hitting from the right side of the plate, and having incredible power numbers, 'd be a perfect addition for the Phillies.
