Silent Surrente continues bid for Melbourne Cup ticket after disastrous Roy Higgins
Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. It all went pear-shaped for Silent Surrente in the Roy Higgins in March, but the Adelaide Cup winning-mare has her chance to hit back at Flemington in Saturday's Listed Andrew Ramsden (2800m). Silent Surrente's bid for a Melbourne Cup golden ticket took a blow in the Roy Higgins (2600m), the mare finished ninth behind talented stayer Deakin in a race where nothing went right. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'It was a disaster (the Roy Higgins), we couldn't have planned for it, no one knew that was going to happen,' O'Shea, who trains in partnership with Will Clarken, said. 'She stepped slowly, ended up behind them and then over-raced really badly. 'On the corner it looked like he (Craig Williams) was going to pull her up, and then she actually ran on again, so she actually ran well – but obviously just draw a line through it.' Silent Surrente was beaten by two lengths in the Port Adelaide Cup, finishing behind Sir Kingsford and Basilinna. The mare looked at risk of fading out at the 500m, but stuck to the task bravely under leading apprentice jockey Rochelle Milnes. • Emerging stayer ready to Rise for Melbourne Cup golden ticket 'She was good, solid, tough as usual,' he said. 'It was obviously a hard set up for her, she had a tough weight (58kg), the race didn't run on the minimum so it was always going to be difficult. 'She ran creditably, she was keeping at it going to the line. I was happy with her five weeks between runs, she could've been a bit soft but she was very good.' O'Shea is confident his honest mare will put her best foot forward again, but is wary Saturday will mark her eighth run of a taxing campaign. 'She never wants to give up, we're hopefully this weekend again,' he said. 'In fairness to her, she's had a long prep, she's going to run out of steam at some stage but she seems to be getting the trip well in these races. 'You'd think she would run well again, there's a little bit of rain due, if that came it would be great, she would love a bit of juice in the ground. 'It's a tough race, I'd be delighted with her if she placed, there's some good horses in it, I think it's probably her last run of the season.' John Allen will pilot the mare on Saturday, replacing Milnes, who received a five-meeting ban for careless riding in the Port Adelaide Cup. It's rotten luck for Milnes, who also missed the mare's Roy Higgins run due to suspension. 'It's unfortunate, because she (Milnes) seems to be getting on great with her,' O'Shea said. Imported jumper Loft could chase Melbourne Cup start in Andrew Ramsden at Flemington
Rain could be the catalyst for an equine intellectual to test his resurgence in Saturday's Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington. Loft has struggled on the flat since his delayed start to racing in Australia following a long-term leg injury that forced him out of the 2022 Melbourne Cup. • The German-bred galloper won at Group 2 level in his homeland and the US before arriving in Australia but has not filled a placing in his local runs for the Hayes brothers or his current trainer Shane Jackson. However, Loft has been a revelation over jumps. Loft has cruised to easy wins at his two hurdle outings but Jackson would like to see whether the gelding's rejuvenation extended to the flat. 'He's galloping like he has a bit of spark and the jumps have really sparked him back up,' Jackson said. 'If we've sparked him up enough, he definitely has the ability to be able to do it. 'He just has to decide himself that he wants to do it. 'Hopefully the rain comes because I'd love to see him go around. 'If he's running in the Andrew Ramsden on Saturday, he'll be jumping six flights of hurdles the day before. 'If he can get his toe into the track, he won't disgrace himself.' Jackson said Loft amazed him with his intelligence from the moment he gave the now seven-year-old his first hurdle school last year. He said Loft's intelligence meant he needed constant variety and tricky handling to convince him to do his best. 'He's probably one of the smartest horses that I've ever had anything to do with so you're constantly trying to change things up for him,' Jackson said. 'The motor is there and we're definitely not writing off a flat career but the jumping will still be mixed among because, if you put a hurdle in front of this horse, he just changes. 'If you make him think he's going better than he is, he seems to find more. He's not a horse that I don't think would respond by getting bullied into anything, he hasn't for me anyway. 'He's a real character.'

Berkshire Breeze the early favourite to qualify for the Melbourne Cup via the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington
The Ciaron Maher-trained Berkshire Breeze is the early favourite to book a Melbourne Cup berth with a win in Saturday's Listed Andrew Ramsden at Flemington. Berkshire Breeze raced without success in last year's Caulfield Cup but is a $6 chance to qualify for the Melbourne Cup in Saturday's $300,000 feature. Berkshire Breeze is one of seven Maher-trained entries for the Andrew Ramsden along with the likes of the recent Warrnambool Cup winner Smokin' Romans and Hobart Cup winner Strawberry Rock. Consistent Mostly Cloudy is the $8 second favourite in Andrew Ramsden betting, while Smokin' Romans is one of five runners at $11. Warrnambool Cup runner-up Torranzino is an $11 chance along with last-start winners Denmark and Fernao as well as the Sydney stayer Athabascan, who ran fifth in the Sydney Cup at his last outing. Mares have a terrific record in the Andrew Ramsden, winning four of the past five, including the past two with Lunar Flare and The Map. Alma Rise and the stakes-placed Basilinna are the highest in the market at $15. Morphettville in which Silente Surrente ran third and Sentimental Flame fifth.
