Ex-Ireland stars commend Ringrose for 'watershed moment'

Garry Ringrose earned praise from several members of the rugby community this summer when he took it upon himself to withdraw from the Lions team. The 30-year-old pulled himself out of the side that faced Australia last month after showing symptoms of a concussion. Ringrose self-reported the symptoms after missing the first test against the Wallabies due to a previous brain injury. Jordi Murphy had high praise for Ringrose. While appearing at the Marie Keating Foundation Celebrity Golf Classic, the two retired players discussed how head injuries are viewed in rugby and how Ringrose may have introduced a 'watershed moment'. Trimble said: 'For him, I was gutted. He was playing well enough to have a really meaningful impact on that Test series and have a meaningful experience. Andrew Trimble commended the Lions star. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile 'There's a lot of history written in those few weeks that he ultimately wasn't a part of, so it's a real shame because he was certainly good enough and playing well enough to be involved. 'But it also shows where we've come in the last number of years and how aware people are of their own health and what's important and the bigger picture around rugby and rugby being managed correctly, people being looked after correctly. 'He has set a really good tone there, so I think he needs to be really proud of how disciplined he was but it must have been so tempting not to have been. The Marie Keating Foundation welcomed celebrities to the charity event. Pic: Andres Poveda 'It's very admirable the way he behaved.' Murphy had similar words of praise to share about the Ireland centre. He added: 'I thought it was an incredibly brave decision. I echo what a lot of people have said. Andrew Trimble. Pic: INPHO 'It could be a bit of a watershed moment I think because any rugby player will tell you, certainly in Britain and Ireland, that playing for the Lions is the pinnacle. 'To be selected for the Lions but then being able to play a Test and the fact that he was named to start and to realise himself that he wasn't quite right and the selfish thing to do would've been to have gone out knowing that he might not last the whole game. 'In the long run, that wouldn't have been remembered. He would always have been remembered as a Test Lion, so he knew himself deep down that he wasn't quite right and that's really important. 'There's been a serious light shone on head injuries in rugby and the long-lasting effects of it. 'He's looking after his well-being. He has a wife and a young son now so obviously there's a lot of things he has to juggle with. 'I'd love to really commend him. It took a lot of bravery and it took a lot to be unselfish in that moment, in a moment that would've really been the pinnacle of anyone's career.' The decision also called into question the validity of rugby's protocols around return to play following brain injuries. At the time, head coach Andy Farrell was quick to add his own praise to Ringrose for the bravery it took to remove himself from selection ahead of what would have been one of the biggest games of his career. He remarked: 'It actually is (selfless), thought exactly the same the minute that he mentioned it because it's tough to do that. 'It's very easy to keep it to yourself and lie and not be honest and open. It was very big of him and the right thing to do, 100%. For the team as well, not just for Garry.'

Irish rugby stars line out to help raise £1m for children's cancer charity

A HOST of Irish rugby stars have taken part in a fundraising challenge to help raise £1m for a children's cancer charity. The 26 Mountains 2 Mayo challenge is currently underway to help Cancer Fund for Children provide vital services for children and families impacted by cancer across the island of Ireland. A team of more than 20 business leaders are currently undertaking the mammoth task, which will see the group climb the highest point in each county across Ireland. Now on the Leinster leg of their journey, the team were joined by Irish rugby legends Tommy Bowe, Andrew Trimble, Declan Fitzpatrick, Devin Toner, Chris Henry and Gordon D'Arcy. The six former Irish rugby stars posed for a snap with Phil Alexander, CEO of Cancer Fund for Children, on Lugnaquilla Mountain in Co. Wicklow, the highest point in Leinster. After completing the Ulster leg of the challenge, the team moved onto Connacht before heading to Leinster, where they were joined by sporting legends. The group will then travel to Munster before making their way back to Connacht for the final peak, Mweelrea in Co. Mayo, on Sunday. Money raised from the challenge will help Cancer Fund for Children build and equip a therapeutic short break centre in Cong, Co. Mayo. The charity currently operates a similar facility called Daisy Lodge in Newcastle, Co. Down. However, with approximately 10 children and young people diagnosed with cancer every week across the island of Ireland, the charity is facing increasing demand for its services.
