Sony TVs are getting a big upgrade with Android 14 — here's the new features and who gets it
Sony TVs with a Realtek chip are in for a big surprise, as they're getting a massive update to Android TV 14 on Google TV. The new upgrade invites several enhancements, like performance gains for displays with limited RAM, Picture-in-Picture mode, and new energy modes. Given that some of the best Google TVs are made by Sony, this is a welcome surprise. It's unclear when users should expect the next batch of updates to Bravia sets, which is expected to include Sony's 2025 TV lineup, but we'll update this page when more info becomes available. If you didn't already know, Google TV is built on Android TV software. It's essentially the exact same thing, only Google TV serves as the interface, and Android TV is the software that powers it. The Android TV 14 upgrade initially launched back in mid-2024. Aside from these select Sony TVs, only a handful of streaming devices have received the new firmware upgrade so far, including Onn 4K boxes and the Google TV Streamer. Android 14 introduces a range of enhancements to the platform. A notable benefit is improved performance for low-RAM TVs, providing slightly better navigation and responsiveness. New energy modes, like Low Energy Mode, Optimized Energy Mode, and Increased Energy Mode, are also included in the mix, as well as a Picture-in-Picture mode. According to Reddit user FlickFreak, these are displays that use a Realtek processor as opposed to a MediaTek one. That means you can expect this initial rollout to be based on cheaper and older models as of right now, like the Bravia 2, X75K, and 77L, many of which are still on Android TV 10 and 11. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Here's the full list of Sony TVs getting Android 14: If you didn't automatically receive an update, make sure you're connected to the internet first. Head to All Settings and click System, then navigate to About. From there, you can select System software update and see if your TV is compatible. If you don't have access to Android TV 14 yet, you might have a more modern display or one with a MediaTek chip, which means you'll have to wait a bit before Sony rolls out that particular update. We'll update this page when we know more about the particular timing of the update for those TVs. Follow Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. Your Sony TV is finally getting its Android TV 14 upgrade — here's who qualifies
Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Sony has begun updating a wide range of Bravia TV models directly to Android TV 14 with Google TV. The rollout appears to target Sony TVs using Realtek chipsets. Android TV 14 brings new features like new energy modes and performance improvements for low-RAM hardware. Unlike Android on smartphones, the Android TV operating system follows a much longer product development cycle. It's not uncommon for TV updates to arrive months after a major platform update is released (if at all they arrive). Case in point is Android TV 14, which launched in mid-2024, but has barely arrived on devices other than Google's own streamers and some Onn 4K boxes. Sony is now massively expanding this list by updating a bunch of its TVs to Android TV 14 with Google TV, some jumping straight up from Android TV 10 and 11. Reddit user Proshis_Saha_Swopna shared that Sony is rolling out Android TV 14 updated based on Google TV for the first batch of Sony Bravia TVs, namely TVs in the Bravia 2, X77L, X75L, X75K, X74L, X74K, X70L, X64L, W880K, W835, W830L, W830K, W825, W820K lineup. More specifically, the following Sony TV models are getting the update: K-43S20 K-43S20B K-43S25 K-50S20 K-50S20B K-50S25 K-55S25 K-55S25B K-65S25 K-65S25B KD-32W825 KD-32W835 KD-32W830L KD-43X64L KD-43X70L KD-43X75L KD-50X64L KD-50X70L KD-50X75L KD-55X74L KD-55X75L KD-65X74L KD-65X75L KD-43X77L KD-50X77L KD-55X77L KD-65X77L KD-75X77L KD-32W820K KD-32W830K KD-43W880K KD-43X74K KD-43X75K KD-50X74K KD-50X75K KD-55X74K KD-55X75K KD-65X74K KD-65X75K Reddit user FlickFreak notes that these are mostly TVs with a Realtek chipset. Sony TVs with a MediaTek chipset haven't yet received the update. My Sony Bravia KD-43X8000H (which, to my knowledge, most likely has a MediaTek chipset) is still stuck on Android TV 10, even though the TV received a firmware update just last month. It's not immediately clear what new features are coming specifically with this update for Sony TVs. Android TV 14 as a platform includes features like new energy modes (Low Energy Mode, Optimized Energy Mode, and Increased Energy Mode), a new Picture-in-Picture mode, and performance upgrades that make the OS more responsive on devices with lower RAM. We'll update this article with the changelog once we spot it. Follow

Walmart's $50 Onn 4K Pro just got a major upgrade to Android TV 14
Lanh Nguyen / Android Authority TL;DR Walmart's Onn 4K Pro has received its long-overdue update to Android TV 14. The update's changelog mentions a new security patch level and minor bug fixes. Users have reported that the update also includes a new boot screen with a black background. Some users report that Dolby Vision issues remain unresolved or worsened for certain apps like Plex. Walmart launched the Onn 4K Pro in May 2024 with Google TV based on Android TV 12 out of the box. As we noted in our Onn 4K Pro review, it is an impressive Chromecast 4K competitor that doubles up as a Google Assistant-based smart speaker. However, users who bought this $50 streaming box have complained about the lack of updates, especially platform updates. There's good news, though, as a new update is rolling out to Onn 4K Pro that bumps it up to Android TV 14. Reddit user geeeman5510 spotted an update to the Onn 4K Pro and shared its update screen, which highlights the platform update to Android TV 14: The changelog also mentions a security patch level update and minor bug fixes. Based on user comments, the update seems to be rolling out in the US, as users in Canada are not yet receiving it. Beyond the changelog, users mention that the update fixes lag issues and provides a smoother experience. Apparently, there's also a new boot screen with a black background. Some users point out that the update possibly fixes the always-on Dolby Vision bug with Netflix, though it is possible that the issue could have been resolved through a Netflix app update. However, one user mentions that their Settings app crashes when navigating to the 'Match content frame rate' stub. Another user mentions that enabling content adaptive switching breaks Dolby Vision, forcing Dolby Vision content in apps like Plex to fall back to HDR. If you have the Onn 4K Pro, check your box to see if you have received the Android TV 14 update.
