'Ibrahim Governance Weekend' (IGW 2025) Forum Kicks Off in Marrakech

The "Ibrahim Governance Weekend" (IGW 2025) Forum kicked off on Sunday 01 June in Marrakech, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, with the participation of a distinguished group of prominent figures from the worlds of politics, economics, and civil society. The participants gathered to discuss the theme of financing Africa's development. The opening ceremony of this event was marked by a message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the participants, which was read by HM the King's Advisor, André Azoulay. This flagship event of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation, held annually in a different African country, highlights the critical role of Africa's resources in accelerating development and transforming the continent's position in the new global economy. The program of this year's edition, which runs until June 3, features an opening day focused on current leadership challenges in Africa and worldwide, in addition to the Ibrahim Forum 2025, held under the theme "Financing the Africa We Want." The Forum includes plenary sessions on Africa's priorities, resource mobilization, reform of the multilateral financial system, and investment across the continent. These discussions aim to contribute to shaping a strong African stance ahead of the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, scheduled from July 1 to 3 in Seville, Spain, and to highlight Africa's ability to play an active role in this area rather than remaining a mere passive beneficiary. A comprehensive report will be published following the IGW Forum, complementing the preliminary "Facts & Figures" document with the key conclusions from these three days of discussions. Established in 2006, the Mo Ibrahim Foundation aims to strengthen Africa's voice on major global issues and emphasizes the importance of governance and leadership. The Foundation provides data and analysis on the continent's challenges, brings together key stakeholders for dialogue, and supports initiatives aimed at improving leadership and governance. Morocco Advances AI in Transport with New Research Partnerships

Rabat – Morocco is taking a strategic step toward incorporating AI deeper into its transport systems. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Transport and Logistics signed three tailored agreements with the Foundation for Research, Development and Innovation in Science and Engineering (FRDISI), with the presence of Minister of Transport Abdessamad Kayouh and Royal Advisor André Azoulay. The ceremony, held in Rabat, signaled a clear intent to turn Morocco's transport, airport, and logistics infrastructure into a testing ground for homegrown innovation. These agreements follow a broader framework established in June 2024 between the ministry and FRDISI that reflects a long-term vision to bolster the role of scientific research in vital sectors. Each agreement serves a specific goal. The first, between FRDISI and the National Railway Operator (ONCF), lays the groundwork for integrating AI into the management of intermodal transport. It also includes plans to automate how surface defects are identified on high-speed trains, an effort that could raise safety and efficiency on the country's rail network. The second agreement connects FRDISI with the National Airports Office (ONDA). It centers on enhancing cognitive performance in air traffic operations, a move designed to sharpen vigilance and reinforce safety. The project also includes the development of a real-time mobile application to ease passenger flows inside Moroccan airports. The third partnership, between FRDISI and the National Company of Transport and Logistics (SNTL), introduces machine learning to fleet management. The goal is to improve vehicle maintenance and performance through data-driven insights. He also noted that FRDISI, with over 40 inventions to its name, would provide valuable support to national efforts to stay ahead of global developments. He also underlined the importance of empowering Moroccan researchers and engineers to design solutions tailored to the country's needs, rather than relying on imported technologies that may not always fit local realities. For André Azoulay, the moment represents a meaningful change. He called the agreements 'a turning point,' adding that they allow FRDISI's network of top-tier scientists to work directly with public institutions on strategic projects. With its public utility status, FRDISI stands at the crossroads of research, training, and industrial development. It also supports the innovation ecosystem through startup incubation, collaborative projects, and the launch of new small enterprises. This move aligns with Morocco's broader development goals, which place innovation and self-reliance at the core of national progress. As the country prepares to co-host major international events such as the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, the integration of advanced technologies into transport and logistics is expected to play a key role in ensuring efficiency, safety, and global readiness.

8th Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Young Leaders Kicks Off in Essaouira

The 8th edition of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum of Young Leaders kicked off on Friday in Essaouira, bringing together a diverse gathering of decision-makers, experts, researchers, and young leaders from both shores of the Mediterranean. The three-day event offers a platform for reflection and dialogue on the common challenges facing Mediterranean youth. Its goal is to strengthen synergies among civil society actors, institutions, and young people with projects and ideas. The opening ceremony was attended by HM the King's Advisor and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, André Azoulay, the French Ambassador to Morocco, Christophe Lecourtier, as well as prominent personalities from various backgrounds. In his keynote address, Azoulay emphasized the importance of a common and united approach to tackling the challenges facing the Mediterranean, such as the environmental crisis, climate change, and ocean preservation. "The Mediterranean is not just a sea, but a true crossroads of cultures and civilizations." Today, more than ever, the sea stands at the heart of humanity's future," he emphasized, urging collective preparation to face the challenges ahead. "In all its diversity, the sea holds the keys to many of the world's most pressing issues—especially in the fight against climate change and the depletion of natural resources." This forum, by giving a voice to the new generation, allows us to hear their visions and proposals. It is vital that young people feel empowered with the responsibility of finding sustainable, innovative, and collective solutions, because they are the builders of tomorrow's world, he pointed out. "Their energy, creativity, and ability to collaborate beyond geographical boundaries are invaluable assets in the quest for a more planet-friendly future," said HM the King's Advisor. In his view, the city stands as a model of peaceful coexistence and openness. The Mediterranean, he affirmed, should not be seen as a dividing line, must be a space for sharing, exchange, and harmony among its peoples. "And it is here, in Essaouira, that we must come together to envision the Mediterranean of tomorrow—greener, more inclusive, and resolutely oriented toward a shared future," Azoulay concluded. For his part, Lecourtier said that this forum represents a unique moment of connection and dialogue between the younger generations of both Mediterranean shores, called upon to imagine solutions together for environmental, economic, and social challenges. Discussing the importance of cooperation and solidarity uniting France and Morocco—particularly in the fight against environmental issues—the diplomat noted that "France and Morocco, as historic partners, have a key role to play in ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for this region." The large-scale forum will continue throughout the weekend, featuring a wide array of workshops on various topics. It will also host a Hackathon aimed at sparking creativity and social entrepreneurship through the generation of high-impact projects related to maritime and environmental challenges.
