Former Steelers Wide Receiver Cut By NFC Contender

A former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver is looking for a new team with the 2025 NFL season nearing. Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Andy Isabella was released by the San Francisco 49ers this week after suffering an ankle injury, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter. Isabella had a brief stint on the Steelers roster last season. He signed to their practice squad on Oct. 25 and was released on Nov. 5. Pittsburgh parted ways with him after trading for wide receiver Mike Williams at the trade deadline. The 28-year-old began his NFL career as a second-round pick (No. 62 overall) by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with the Cardinals (2019-2022), recording 33 receptions for 447 yards and three touchdowns in 41 games. Isabella was then picked up by the Baltimore Ravens shortly after, spending the rest of the 2022 season with them. He signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2023, but only played in two regular season games and two playoff games. Isabella signed a reserve/future contract with the Bills in 2024 but was released before the start of the season. Isabella played college football at UMass, where he led the entirety of FBS with 1,698 total receiving yards and 141.5 receiving yards per game. He was also second in total receptions (102), third for receptions per game (8.5) and tied for sixth in touchdown receptions (13). Isabella ranked sixth in FBS for all-purpose yards per game (152.67), which placed him first out of all FBS players in New England and second among all wide receivers nationally. At the combine, Isabella ran a 4.31 second 40-yard dash, which was the third-fastest time that year, tied with Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell. Luke Farrell adds to 49ers offense in his own way, while rookie DBs keep shining

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Someone stepped on fullback Kyle Juszczyk's Achilles tendon on Saturday. On Monday, new guy Andy Isabella pulled up lame during a drill (and was sent packing the next day), the latest receiver injury of training camp. One of the few constants on the San Francisco 49ers' offense the past two weeks has been tight end Luke Farrell, who has gone largely under the radar after being the team's biggest signing of the offseason (three years, $20 million). Farrell can catch a little bit, but that's not where his value lies. Advertisement 'I love him. He's one of the best run-blocking tight ends I've seen in a long time,' 49ers offensive line coach Chris Foerster said. 'Obviously, (George) Kittle's outstanding. (Farrell) has an impact on defensive ends. When he blocks or hits a defensive end, there's movement. You see things with him that you don't see with a lot of tight ends. He's really cool that way.' The former Jacksonville Jaguar has had some good battles with first-round rookie Mykel Williams at practice. 'He's going to come after you, and you got to be ready for it,' Farrell said after Tuesday's practice. 'And yeah, he's strong. He's not a kid, for sure.' Farrell has been busier the past two days, as the offense has used more two-tight-end looks with Juszczyk out. 'He's done a good job,' coach Kyle Shanahan said. 'We brought him in here because we think he's a really good blocker and can do some things in the pass game. We're asking him to do some things he hasn't done before, starting back (at offseason workouts), and he's been very conscientious of it, getting all the reps of it, and I think getting better at what we're asking him to do each day.' For Farrell, the transition has been easier because he came over with another former Jaguar, new backup quarterback Mac Jones. But it's still been taxing. 'Learning a new offense is never easy, especially a detailed one like this,' Farrell said. 'But the coaches and my teammates are going to know that they can count on me to do what they're asking me to every time and not have to really worry about it.' The fifth-year player out of Ohio State had only 36 catches for 318 yards in four seasons with the Jaguars, but he is never going to start asking for the ball. 'It's like that plus-minus stat in basketball, it's like if I'm overall plus with the offense, I'm happy,' Farrell said. 'I like the role. I think George is the same way — knocking a guy down feels good, just like making a big catch.' Advertisement • With safety Ji'Ayir Brown out with an ankle issue, Richie Grant spent most of Tuesday's practice with the first-team defense and had his most prolific outing of training camp. Grant picked off Brock Purdy on a short pass over the middle — it was hard to see who the target was — during an early drill and had good coverage on a rare Purdy-to-Ricky Pearsall incompletion. Notably, fifth-round rookie Marques Sigle also took a handful of snaps with the first-team defense for the first time this summer. • Deommodore Lenoir (hip) got regular snaps in team drills, and it seems like he'll take part in Thursday's joint practice with the Denver Broncos. Lenoir looked like himself in breaking up a Purdy pass to George Kittle at the sideline. With Renardo Green (hamstring) still a week or so away from practicing, Dallis Flowers continues to get most of the first-team repetitions at outside cornerback opposite Lenoir. Flowers was also one of the players who returned kickoffs during Tuesday's session. • Rookie Upton Stout, who seems to have a firm hold on the nickelback job, had one of the best plays on Tuesday. Purdy appeared to have a sure deep-ball touchdown to Christian McCaffrey, who'd beaten linebacker Fred Warner down the field. Stout, however, came off the man he was covering, stretched out an arm and managed to tip the ball, which fell incomplete. Stout also beat Pearsall three times in one-on-one drills in the end zone early in practice. Another rookie cornerback, undrafted Jakob Robinson, has also been good for one pass breakup per practice. He had two more Tuesday, one in the corner of the end zone against Robbie Chosen and the other on a throw from Carter Bradley to receiver Equanimeous St. Brown. The 49ers re-signed St. Brown on Tuesday and released Isabella with a 'failure to disclose a physical condition' designation. • The descriptions above might make it seem as if Purdy had a rough outing. He didn't. He was 10 of 14 in team situations, including a red zone touchdown to Kittle. He was also 5 of 6 on passes to Pearsall in team situations, including a dazzling snag over the middle on which Pearsall had to reach behind him to collect the ball. Advertisement Mac Jones, meanwhile, was 14 of 15, with the lone incompletion coming on an overthrow on his final toss of the day. Jones did get a bit lucky when his deep crosser to tight end Brayden Willis was tipped in the air by safety Jaylen Mahoney and hauled in by receiver Demarcus Robinson for a big gain. Jones also connected on two well-placed sideline throws to rookie Jordan Watkins. Bradley, the third quarterback, was 3 of 7, including a drop by Farrell. • Observed working out on a side field Tuesday: Nick Bosa, Evan Anderson (knee), Green (hamstring), Malik Mustapha (ACL), Andre Dillard (ankle), Jacob Cowing (hamstring), Isaac Guerendo (shoulder), Juszczyk (cut on his leg) and Brown (ankle). Bosa has sat out the last three practices. Asked Monday if the defensive end is injured, Shanahan said, 'No. We just gave him an off (day) today — vet day.' • Along with Lenoir, rookie running back Jordan James (knee) and linebacker Curtis Robinson (ACL) also took snaps during the team period, their first since returning from injuries. • A day after the 49ers released kicker Greg Joseph, Jake Moody went 5 of 6 on his field-goal attempts, with his final attempt from 54 yards hitting the crossbar. 49ers sign WR Marquez Callaway, QB Carter Bradley

The 49ers announced a number of roster moves on Thursday, including the previously reported additions of running back Ameer Abdullah and wide receiver Andy Isabella. Two other players who tried out alongside Abdullah and Isabella on Wednesday also landed spots on the roster. Wide receiver Marquez Callaway and quarterback Carter Bradley signed with the team. Callaway played two games for the Bucs after making 45 appearances for the Saints over his first four seasons. He had 83 catches for 1,069 yards and seven touchdowns while with New Orleans. Bradley spent last season on the Raiders' practice squad. The 49ers made room for the new arrivals by waiving or releasing wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown, offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez, wide receiver Malik Knowles, and safety Jaylen Mahoney. They also activated offensive lineman Ben Bartch off of the non-football injury list.

49ers sign RB Ameer Abdullah, WR Andy Isabella

July 31 - The San Francisco 49ers are signing running back Ameer Abdullah and wide receiver Andy Isabella to the training camp roster on Thursday after they completed tryouts on Wednesday. Abdullah is expected to provide depth behind star Christian McCaffrey. Isabella, drafted 62nd overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, also can return punts and is expected to work primarily as a slot receiver. With 2024 leading rusher Jordan Mason gone, the 49ers had Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor and fifth-round rookie Jordan James in the mix at running back during training camp. Abdullah, 32, rushed for 311 yards with two touchdowns and caught 40 passes for 261 yards with three scores in 16 games (three starts) with the Las Vegas Raiders last season. He has rushed for 1,994 yards with eight touchdowns and added 203 receptions for 1,468 receiving yards and 11 scores in 141 career games (26 starts) with the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, Carolina Panthers and Raiders. He was selected by the Lions in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Isabella, 28, most recently played for the St. Louis Battlehawks (UFL). He spent time on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad in 2024 and was last on an NFL roster with the Baltimore Ravens (2022) and Buffalo Bills (2023). --Field Level Media
