Eddie McGuire blasts Channel Seven star Andy Maher for being a hypocrite after he was caught up in an ugly moment at the footy with a drunk fan

Eddie McGuire has blasted Channel Seven rival Andy Maher for criticising fans who drink too much at the footy after the Front Bar host was caught up in ugly scenes at the Carlton vs Collingwood match last Saturday night. Security guards had to step in when Maher was confronted by a spectator he later described as 'pretty pi**ed' and 'munted'. On Monday, the 61-year-old commentator lashed out at fans who get drunk at games in comments that got McGuire offside. 'The last five times I've gone to the footy with the kids it [fans drinking] has been an issue and it's always been in the MCC [Melbourne Cricket Club] members, which is the troubling thing,' Maher said. 'Why do you have to come along and get yourself munted and then make a fool of yourself and ruin everyone else's experience?' McGuire hit back at Maher on Wednesday night's edition of Nine's Footy Classified show. No idea what this was about with this drongo, but bravo to Andy for keeping a level head — Adrian Sal (@adriansal80) July 21, 2025 'I was going to say something about a story that was coming up with Andy Maher, but I'll let it go until next week. I don't need to have a blue with anybody at the moment,' McGuire said. 'But if you're hosting a show called The Front Bar, don't complain about people drinking at the footy.' The Front Bar has been sponsored by beer companies since it started in 2017, first partnering with Carlton Draught, then switching to Furphy in 2023. The show features regular hosts Maher, Mick Molloy and Sam Pang drinking beers as they interview guests, who usually have a beer themselves. Daily Mail Australia does not suggest that the show does, or ever has, promoted irresponsible drinking. The vision of the Maher incident shows a man who was unsteady on his feet get out of his seat and confront the commentator and noted Carlton fan. It is not known what the man said, but he could be seen touching Maher's shoulder during the clash, as other fans yelled for security to have him removed. A woman could be seen trying to de-escalate the situation before MCG security arrived and escorted the disruptive man away. 'It was the last three minutes of the game and I noticed there were two blokes who were pretty pi**ed,' Maher said. '[Comedian] Dave Hughes was sitting four rows behind me and my attention was caught by Hughesy saying, "You can't say that to the old bloke, you've crossed the line, take it back, apologise". 'Then this bloke looked up at me and saw me sitting there and I said, "Mate, just shoosh". That was it. 'Then he came over to me and said, "Andrew Maher, I know you. You will listen to me". 'He was pi**ed and wouldn't sit down, so then he got chucked out.' The incident took place in front of Maher's daughters, who he said were 'a bit freaked out' by the fan. 'The last five times I've gone to the footy with the kids it [fans drinking] has been an issue and it's always been in the MCC [Melbourne Cricket Club] members, which is the troubling thing.' According to comments on social media from people who claimed to have witnessed the clash, Maher kept his cool throughout the encounter. '....some deranged Dees supporter was having a crack at @AndyMaher behind me. Poor bloke was just trying to watch the game with his kids,' posted an X user. 'No idea what this was about with this drongo, but bravo to Andy for keeping a level head,' replied another.

Video emerges of drunken man being kicked out of MCG after confronting Seven Network and SEN radio's Andy Maher

Video has emerged of a drunken spectator being kicked out of the MCG after confronting TV and radio personality Andy Maher on Saturday. The co-host of Seven Network's The Front Bar and SEN radio's Run Home was watching the Carlton Blues defeat the Melbourne Demons from the MCC members section when a visibly intoxicated man stumbled up the stairs to speak to him. Little can be heard of what was said as the man stood over a visibly annoyed Maher while a blonde female appears to encourage the unknown male to return to his seat. While the majority of nearby fans can be heard calling for security to 'get him out', at least one bystander appears to encourage the drunken man to 'lay in to him'. The two-minute-long video shows MCG security personnel come down to intervene in the confrontation. One security guard was quick to position himself between Maher and the unknown spectator. The security personnel appeared to encourage the man to leave while Maher, who was attending the game with his three daughters, attempts to continue watching the game. After unsuccessfully convincing the man to leave of his own accord, security can be seen physically removing the man. Seemingly confused with what has occurred, the man can be heard saying 'this is unbelievable'. Maher told the Herald Sun he hadn't had any interaction with the man until he came and stood over him. 'It was the last three minutes of the game and I noticed there were two blokes who were pretty pissed,' Maher said. He said he heard another media personality, comedian Dave Hughes, tell the pair they had 'crossed a line' with what they had said and they should 'take it back' and apologise. 'Then this bloke looked up at me and saw me sitting there and I said, 'Mate, just shoosh'. That was it,' he said. 'Then he came over to me and said, 'Andrew Maher, I know you. You will listen to me'. He was pissed and wouldn't sit down so then he got chucked out.' Maher said he was trying to make sure his family were OK during the confrontation, stating they were a 'bit freaked out' by what had occurred. He said this incident wasn't the first time drunken fans had been an issue when he attended the footy with his family. He said it was however 'troubling' that it occurred in the MCC members – a section known for its strict dress code that requires men to wear collared shirts, bans woman wearing 'revealing tops' and footwear ranging from thongs to gumboots.

It's unclear what the man says to Maher, who hosts The Front Bar , but a number of other spectators can be heard yelling at security to kick the man out. The man appears wobbly on his feet throughout the interaction, while a woman also appears to try and diffuse the situation. Two security staff then came down the aisle and eventually remove the man, which was applauded by fans in the area. A clip of the incident has gone viral on social media with fans praising Maher for remaining calm throughout. Maher said he had zero interaction with the fan before he came up to him. 'It was the last three minutes of the game and I noticed there were two blokes who were pretty pissed,' Maher told News Corp . 'Dave Hughes was sitting four rows behind me and my attention was caught by Hughesy saying, 'You can't say that to the old bloke, you've crossed the line, take it back, apologise'. 'Then this bloke looked up at me and saw me sitting there and I said, 'Mate, just shoosh'. That was it. 'Then he came over to me and said, 'Andrew Maher, I know you. You will listen to me'. He was pissed and wouldn't sit down so then he got chucked out.' Maher was in the stands with his young daughters after earlier taking part in Carlton's Race for Respect. He said his children were initially 'freaked out' by the situation, but Maher quickly realised that the man wasn't going to do anything stupid. Maher shed more light on the incident on SEN later on Tuesday. 'Well, he was escorted out of the premises. It had nothing to do with me,' he said. 'I just told the fella to sit down. I said, 'Mate, you're going to get thrown out if you keep going'. He got thrown out. 'I missed the start of it, but Dave Hughes was in the middle of it all at the start and doing a very fine job of sticking up for one of our veteran members of society, who had, apparently, drawn some unsavoury language from this bloke.' Maher said there was too much of this happening. 'There's too many blokes going and getting (drunk) at the footy these days. There's too much of it,' he said. 'There's too many blokes going to the footy – go to the footy and having a few beers, by all means – but why do so many people have to go the footy and get three sheets to the breeze? Why does that happen? 'Why can't you just go to the footy and have a couple of beers? Why do you have to come along and get yourself munted and then make a fool of yourself and ruin everyone else's experience.'
