Students across Bolton have been celebrating their amazing achievements as graduation week continues in full swing. Graduates and their friends and families gathered for three ceremonies in the Albert Halls in Bolton's magnificent town hall building. A number of notable figures were also awarded honorary degrees and doctorates to celebrate their fantastic achievements. Former Bolton mayor, Cllr Andy Morgan, received his honorary doctorate from the university on Thursday July 17. Cllr Morgan, said he was 'deeply honoured' after he was awarded an honorary doctorate, in front of graduands from the University's Greater Manchester Business School and Greater Manchester School of Law. After he was presented with his doctorate by Assistant Vice Chancellor Caroline Cowburn, Cllr Morgan told students and their families at the graduation ceremony in Bolton Town Hall's Albert Halls: 'This is a moment I never could have imagined when my journey began." Speaker of the House of Commons Sir Lindsay Hoyle said he was "very proud" as he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Greater Manchester. Sir Lindsay received a Doctor of Laws (Hon LLD) in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Law and the Community. He was presented with the honour by the University's Pro Chancellor Rasha Said in front of graduands from the University's Greater Manchester Business School and the Greater Manchester School of Law. As well as Cllr Morgan, Nick Mason, who has been drummer for the legendary rockers, Pink Floyd since 1965, was given the honour of Doctor of Arts (Hon DArts) at the University of Greater Manchester, formerly Bolton. This was in recognition of his outstanding contribution to entertainment and local sport. Nick is also part of Football Ventures (Whites) Limited, the consortium that saved Bolton Wanderers from potential liquidation in August 2019.

'Serving as mayor of Bolton was a particularly proud moment for me and my family and it reinforced my belief in the strength and potential of our community. Cllr Morgan said: 'The University has long been a pillar of education, aspiration and opportunity for our town and region. "The university's recent rebranding reflects its ambitious vision to connect local heritage with global aspirations. 'By embracing the Greater Manchester identity, the University not only enhances its reputation, but also mirrors the aspirational spirit of Bolton, a town proud of its roots, yet unafraid to aim for greater heights.' Cllr Morgan began his journey in service by joining the British Army and after graduating from training, he served in the Army Air Corps. Following military service, Cllr Morgan continued his professional journey with British Aerospace, relocating to Saudi Arabia. In 1999, he returned to the UK with his family and settled in Bolton, where he purchased and continues to run the family business as managing director. Cllr Andy Morgan began his journey in service by joining the British Army and after graduating from training, he served in the Army Air Corps. He has held multiple leadership roles on the council, including executive cabinet member for adults services, safeguarding and housing, and chair of the adults and health scrutiny committee. For four years, he championed the needs of veterans as Bolton's armed forces champion. He was appointed as a magistrate in 2001 and serves as a trustee of Bolton Hospice, Bolton FM, and Age UK (Bolton), reflecting his belief in supporting people at every stage of life. He added: 'If I can do it, so can you. "Many of you may have come from humble beginnings or faced challenges that sometimes felt insurmountable, as I did. But remember this, your background does not define your future. 'What defines you is your determination, your willingness to persevere and your commitment to making a difference.'

A Bolton food manufacturer said it was a "privilege" to host Bolton's 2024-25 Mayor for his final official engagement Blazing Limited is a company that makes a range of sauces, rubs and breading – which were praised by Cllr Andy Morgan before he handed on the chains of office. He was joined by the then-mayoress Karen Holdsworth for an exclusive tour of the factory and tasting session. Cllr Morgan said: "If your taste buds are feeling brave, Blazing is the name to know, go look for them on social media and online." Founder and director of Blazing Limited, Mohammad Idrees, said: "We are proud to be Boltonians and even prouder to have built our manufacturing business here in Bolton. They said that from there, the business expanded, now making products from wings sauce to coating to mixes. They said that they are unique "in a way that we manufacture great quality products for each foodservice sector" and that they build businesses "through innovation and creativity" in how they "develop, jobs" target="_blank">work and deliver".

Bolton Wanderers FC special gesture for the town's first citizen
Bolton Wanderers have unveiled two specially dedicated seats in honour of the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton. The seats are embroidered with the town's coat of arms and were revealed just ahead of the club's final home match of the season against Stevenage. Located inside the Directors' Box in the KIA West Stand, the seats will be reserved for the current and future Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton for all Wanderers' home games. The symbolic gesture highlights the football club's commitment to civic pride and its ongoing connection with local leadership. Have a story? Fire crews discover 'church roof in flames' was actually VE Day anniversary beacon
Fire crews who were called to a church expecting a fire arrived to find it was actually VE Day anniversary beacon. Three crews were called out to the Bolton Parish Church at around 10pm on Thursday 8 May after a passer-by reported a the church roof was "in flames." When they arrived, it soon became clear that the flames were actually coming from a beacon being lit to mark the conclusion of the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Dan Martin, watch manager for Bolton Central fire station, said: 'A passer-by saw the flame up top and assumed it was a fire, it's as simple as that really. 'It turned out to be nothing more than part of the town's celebrations for VE Day. 'We were there for literally five minutes, had a quick chat with everyone there and shook hands with a few of the veterans.' Bolton's beacon lighting was one hundreds across the nation which took place at at 9.30pm yesterday in a symbol of unified remembrance. Earlier a service to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day was described by the Mayor of Bolton, Coun Andy Morgan as 'a truly moving and unforgettable occasion'. More than 600 people gathered in the heart of the town at the Parish Church to honour the sacrifice made by so many in the name of freedom and peace. Coun Morgan, said: 'It was a powerful reminder of the strength of our community and the deep respect we continue to show for those who came before us. 'The celebration was made even more special by the incredible performances from the Parish Church music team, the Hoover Band and the stirring presence of the lone piper. 'The service concluded with a spectacular moment as the beacon was lit. 'It made me incredibly proud as Mayor, but also as a resident of this remarkable town, to have played just a small part in such a significant event. 'Thank you to all our veterans and cadets that paraded and everyone else that paid their respects.'
