Atletico Madrid register interest in second Liverpool player
Atletico Madrid are on the hunt for attacking additions this summer, with at least one current player set to leave during the upcoming transfer window. And at this stage, there is a good chance that they sign at least one Liverpool player as the replacement(s). Angel Correa is set to depart Atleti after reportedly agreeing terms for a move to Mexico, and he will be replaced if he does move on. Replacements have already been lined up, and it is believed that one player that club officials are looking at is Darwin Nunez. Advertisement The Uruguay international is believed to be very interesting in a move to the RiyadhAir Metropolitano, but as it turns out, he could be snubbed in favour of his Liverpool teammate. He will be allowed to leave Liverpool having only joined in 2024, and director of football Carlos Bucero has him on his shortlist. Atleti view Chiesa as a market opportunity. Liverpool want to sell, but they would also be open to letting him leave on loan. In this regard, he would be significantly cheaper than Nunez, which would make him more desirable for Los Colchoneros, who are already planning to spend big on Cristian Romero and Alex Baena. Chiesa could finally make his move to La Liga Prior to his Liverpool move in 2024, Chiesa attracted strong interest from Barcelona. And while that move fell through due to financial problems, Atleti would have more chances to complete a deal this summer. It remains to be seen whether Atleti make a strong effort to sign Chiesa this summer. If so, they are expected to face competition from Napoli, who want to bring the Italy international back to the Serie A.

Atletico Madrid transfer round-up: Pablo Barrios renews contract until 2030
With Atletico Madrid looking likely to be active in the transfer market again this summer, there are a number of developing stories regarding Los Colchoneros. However one story is done and dusted: Pablo Barrios has renewed his contract with the club for the next five years. It was reported earlier in the month that Barrios would renew his Atletico contract, and that has now been confirmed by the club. The 21-year-old is now committed for the next five years, and regarded by many to be the future of their midfield, as well as a future club captain; in many ways, the successor to Koke Resurreccion. Advertisement So far Barrios has amassed 101 appearances, with four goals and seven assists to his name too. This season he has asserted himself as a starter, making 40 appearances, and accumulating over 3,000 minutes. Image via Dennis Doyle / Getty Images Additions to come in the final third for Atletico Despite the bizarre situation surrounding Angel Correa, he is expected to exit the club this summer, as is Rodrigo Riquelme. The 25-year-old has played just 846 minutes after a promising start to his career with the first team last season, although it is yet to be decided if it will be on loan or permanently, say Relevo. The same outlet say that Real Betis are interested in Riquelme this summer. Advertisement He could be a factor in a deal for Johnny Cardoso. The USMNT international is atop their shortlist of midfielders, and has already expressed a desire to play for Atletico, say Marca. They call it love at first sight, and say Cardoso believes Atletico is a good next step in his career, and can already picture life in the Spanish capital. More of a like for like replacement for Riquelme would be Gabri Veiga though. Ruben Uria, as covered by MD, claims that Veiga is an option, and Atletico have contacted his camp with an offer for next season. Porto are in negotiations for Veiga though, and AC Milan have also enquired about him. It is predicted that €16-17m will be required to extract him from Al-Ahli, where he is also earning €12m per annum. It would be a surprise if they brought in both Veiga and priority target Alex Baena. Villarreal CEO Fernando Roig Negueroles recently confirmed that no offers had arrived for Baena, and Atletico do not want to pay his €55m release clause, report Relevo. Further forward, if Correa does leave, Diario AS note that Wolves' Fabio Silva, who has scored nine goals on loan at Las Palmas this year is an option to replace the Argentine. The 22-year-old has a year left on his deal, and is keen to stay in Spain. More reinforcements at the back too Just as Baena is their top target for the midfield, Tottenham Hotspur's Cristian Romero remains their top priority at the back. Marca explain that they are aware it will come down to the negotiating table with Daniel Levy and Spurs, given Romero is keen to join Atletico. Their plan is to try and talk down the €70m asking price, but they know that it will have to be more than the €52m Spurs paid for Romero four years ago, in order to twist Levy's arm. Advertisement Despite the presence of Nahuel Molina, Marcos Llorente spent much of the season at right-back, and it is an area they could also address. They are willing to compete for Osasuna's Jesus Areso with Athletic Club, who have thus far been reluctant to pay up for his €12m release clause, as per Relevo. On the other side of the defence, RC Lens Facundo Medina is increasingly thought of as a smart addition at the Metropolitano. It is believed that he would cost €20-25m say MD, with Olympique Marseille and Serie A sides interested, as are River Plate. Medina plans to continue in Europe though, and feels his time at Lens is up. Diego Simeone is keen on him due to his left-sidedness and ability to play out from the back. If they can Atletico will add more than one central defender, and Getafe's Omar Alderete continues to be an option on the table from last summer, as is Cristhian Mosquera.

Atletico Madrid have denied receiving any offers for Angel Correa after the forward appeared to say goodbye to the club on Sunday. Correa is under contract until June 2026 but, following Sunday's 4-1 win over Real Betis, posted on Instagram at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano that he had 'lived my last home game in this shirt that I love so much'. Advertisement Correa has been a mainstay in the Atletico team since arriving from San Lorenzo in his native Argentina in 2014 but has made only five starts across La Liga and the Champions League this term. Spanish outlets have linked the 30-year-old with a summer departure from Atletico and he appeared emotional at the end of the Betis game, walking a lap around the stadium and seemingly waving goodbye. Atletico end their league campaign next Sunday with a trip to Girona. 'Given the doubts generated at the end of yesterday's match against Real Betis at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the club wants to clarify that Angel Correa is currently under contract with Atletico Madrid until June 30, 2026,' Atletico said in a statement on Monday. 'No club has contacted our entity to start negotiations for a possible transfer of our striker, nor has his representative made us any offer for the Argentine international.' 'A brilliant career that the club will deservedly recognise in due course when the player finishes his contract or if the circumstances of a transfer to another club should arise,' Atletico added. Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa suspended 5 matches for insulting referee in Spanish league
Associated Press MADRID (AP) — The Spanish soccer federation handed Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa a five-match suspension on Wednesday for insulting a referee in a Spanish league game this weekend. Correa was seen insulting the referee after being shown a straight red card for a hard foul in the 88th minute of his team's 2-1 loss to Getafe on Sunday. Correa was initially shown a yellow card but video review changed it to a red card. The Argentine forward later apologized on social media. Correa faced a 12-match suspension. He will miss games in the Copa del Rey and Spanish league, beginning on Sunday against Barcelona at home in La Liga. Atletico trails Barcelona and Real Madrid by one point in the Spanish league. Atletico's Correa Banned for Five Games after Insulting Referee
Atletico Madrid forward Angel Correa has been suspended for five games following his insults towards a referee last weekend, Spain's soccer federation (RFEF) said on Wednesday. The Argentina international saw a straight red card in the 88th minute of their 2-1 loss at Getafe in LaLiga on Sunday for a studs-up tackle on opposition defender Djene, after the incident was reviewed by VAR, Reuters reported. Correa then repeatedly insulted referee Cuadra Fernandez, who included the forward's remarks in the match report. The sanction includes a one-match ban for the red card and four for the subsequent insults, the RFEF said. The 30-year-old will miss Atletico's next five games of the domestic calendar, including LaLiga matches against Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid, as well as the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final tie against Barca. Correa has scored seven goals in 38 appearances in all competitions this season.
