Astonishing petrol station 'overcharge' that every Aussie needs to know about
Furious Aussies have been shocked to discover they have been overcharged thousands of dollars for purchases at a popular petrol station chain. Multiple visitors to Reddy Express (formerly known as Coles Express) noticed their transaction had been repeated, sometimes over more than 100 times, on Saturday. Calling into 2GB radio on Wednesday, a Sydney man named Steve said he was charged 134 times for a payment of around $106. The total of his transactions came to an eye-watering $14,204. Another man, Angelo, said his daughter had spent $6 on a drink and a chocolate at a Reddy Express and was charged for the transaction 104 times. Aussies impacted by the glitch were given a phone number to contact, which was said to lead to an automated voice message. The voice message said Reddy Express was aware of the issue, and that customers would be reimbursed within two to seven days. Angelo said that his daughter would soon be travelling overseas, and was concerned over whether she would be refunded before she left. Reddy Express has since issued an apology about the glitch, revealing it was a widespread issue across their stores over the weekend. 'On Saturday (31/5) a technical issue led to intermittent EFTPOS errors affecting some guests paying by credit or debit card at Reddy Express stores,' a statement said. 'In some cases, this has resulted in guests being charged more than once for their transaction. 'We are working to reverse any duplicate transactions as quickly as possible. 'In most cases, people should have seen the refund appear in their debit or credit card accounts by now. 'If you have not yet received a refund or have not yet contacted us, please contact us now via our customer service office contactus-retail@ or call 1800 656-055. 'Reddy Express sincerely apologises to any impacted guests.' Anyone who made a purchase at a store is urged to check their transaction history. More than 700 Coles Express servos across Australia were rebranded to Reddy after they were sold to petrol and diesel supplier Viva Energy in 2023. In 2024, a similar 'duplicate payments' glitch hit Commonwealth Bank, with furious customers demanding answers after money ' disappeared' from their accounts. Hundreds of customers reported seeing multiple payments on their accounts on Saturday morning, with some experiencing overdrawn accounts, while others were left stranded with no money to travel.

Glasgow pupil raises £400 for school defibrillator
Angelo Jack, a pupil at St Denis' Primary School in Dennistoun, raised £402 by completing a sponsored 5k run around Glasgow Green. The young fundraiser was determined to leave a lasting legacy at his school before moving on to secondary education. Read more: Around 90,000 Scottish carers to receive financial boost this month Angelo said: "As this is my final year at St Denis' Primary School in Dennistoun, Glasgow, I wanted to do something good for the school and make the place feel safer – not just for the learners (and my wee brother) and staff but also for the local Dennistoun community. "I am very happy about this and feel very proud that I have achieved a really important life-saving device for my school." Angelo's efforts come at a crucial time. Around 1,062 schools in Scotland - four in every 10 - still don't have access to a defibrillator. Research shows that using one within three to five minutes of a cardiac arrest can increase survival chances from nine per cent to up to 50 per cent. Angelo said his project was inspired by the lack of funding for defibrillators, and he was supported every step of the way by his school's depute head teacher, Mrs Johnston, as well as his peers, local businesses, and charity partners. The remaining cost of the defibrillator was covered by St John Scotland, a charity committed to improving emergency response capabilities in local communities. Angelo said: "I have had parents, carers, and younger pupils from the school telling me how much I have made awareness to them and also educated them about the facts and benefits of having this device. 'My wee school is the best wee school in Glasgow.' Thanks to Angelo's determination and community support, St Denis' Primary School - and the wider Dennistoun area - now has access to a vital piece of life-saving equipment.

Why Americans are camping alone more than ever
Americans are taking more solo camping trips to get away from it all. Why it matters: Depending on who you ask, it's either another symptom of America's loneliness epidemic or it's healthy YOLO move for people who just need a break from the craziness of daily life. 🏕️ The big picture: About 31% of campers went solo at least one night in 2024, according to a survey of more than 4,000 campers by The Dyrt, an app that helps people snag camping spots. That's up from 30% in 2023, 24% in 2022 and 19% in 2021. "We just keep seeing this go up, up, up," The Dyrt CEO Kevin Long tells Axios. Between the lines: The pandemic may have sparked the solo camping boom. "During the pandemic, we all got good at doing things by ourselves and got good at getting creative at how to go have experiences," Long says. "I think that has just moved forward since then and has become a permanent thing in the ecosystem." 🌳 For campers like Colorado resident Kris Angelo, the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want, do what you want and spend what you want is a huge draw. It's "the freedom of making all the decisions yourself and being able to choose your location," he says. "You can make it as cheap or expensive as you'd like." "I certainly wouldn't have been able to afford four vacations last year if I was staying at hotels," he adds. The intrigue: The solo camping trend looks like the latest evolution in what political scientist Robert Putnam famously chronicled in his book " Bowling Alone" — America's steady decline of togetherness and collective experiences. In some ways, Americans are more isolated than ever. For example, solo living is on the rise. Then-Surgeon General Vivek Murthy flagged loneliness as a public health issue in 2023. But Angelo argues that solo camping leads to more social interaction than you would expect: "You end up talking to the locals a lot more when you're out there by yourself than when you're traveling with people." 🐶 Reality check: Many solo campers are traveling with a four-legged friend: About half brought their dog with them in 2024, according to The Dyrt's research. That includes Angelo, who brings his Australian Shepherd mix Chappelle with him on his camping excursions, such as his trip last year to the Black Hills of South Dakota. "Are you really camping solo — you're out there with your best friend," The Dyrt's Long says.
