Gérald Baticle extends as France U-21 manager
France U-21 manager Gérald Baticle has penned a two-year contract extension, the French FA has announced on Friday. The former Angers SCO head coach was Thierry Henry's assistant coach when the former Arsenal legend was in charge of Les Bleuets. Henry's resignation on the back of France's run to the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games paved the way for Baticle to be given the reins. Baticle has overseen nine games for France's U-21 team, logging four wins, four draws and one loss. Les Bleuets are currently in Slovakia to take part in the 2025 Euros. France have qualified for the quarter-finals. Les Bleuets have been held to a stalemate against Portugal before defeating Georgia and Poland. Castello Lukeba's teammates will lock horns with Denmark in the quarter-finals on Sunday. 'I am very proud and honored to carry on my mission as France U21 manager', Baticle said. 'I thank the Federation and its President for this vote of confidence, and it is with great enthusiasm and determination that we will approach these next two years.' Angers midfielder's contract mutually terminated
Angers SCO have mutually terminated the contract of 31-year-old midfielder Jean-Eudes Aholou. Aholou arrived at the Stade Raymond Kopa in July 2024. Despite having another year remaining on his contract, both parties agreed to terminate the deal after just a single season. In an official post, Angers thanked Aholou for his 'professionalism.' Advertisement Aholou began his career at Lille OSC but was unable to make a first-team appearance before moving to Orléans. After two seasons, he joined RC Strasbourg Alsace – the first of two separate spells at the club. He arrived at Angers from the Alsace-based side, having failed to make an appearance in the 2023-24 campaign. Aholou has also represented the Ivory Coast at both youth and senior levels. He earned his first senior cap in March 2018 and has made a total of seven appearances. He was called up to the squad for their most recent round of World Cup qualification matches. GFFN | Ed Marsh

France U21 manager Gérald Baticle to extend contract
In charge since the end of the 2024 Paris Olympics, Gérald Baticle will extend his stay with France's U-21 national team. On Friday, L'Équipe reported that the former AJ Auxerre striker will be in charge of the French youth squad until 2027. Since replacing Thierry Henry as manager, Baticle has six wins, four draws and one defeat as head coach. At the moment, Baticle is involved in the U-21 Euros in Slovakia as the French are in a group alongside Portugal, Georgia and Poland. They drew 0-0 in their opening fixture against the Portuguese and then beat Georgia on Saturday (3-2). They will conclude the group phase against Poland on June 17. Advertisement His new contract means that he'll be around for the following Euros in Albania and Serbia in June 2027. Before being named an assistant to the French U-21 squad that won a silver medal at the previous Olympics, Baticle served as manager of Angers SCO from May 2021 to December 2022 in Ligue 1 before being sacked. He had also spent three seasons with the Auxerre U-18 squad, guiding them to the final of the Coupe Gambardella in 2007. As a player for AJA under the legendary Guy Roux, Baticle won the Coupe de France in 1994 and the Coupe de la Ligue the following year. Baticle was the leading goalscorer at the 1992-93 Europa League, known back then as the UEFA Cup, scoring eight times as they made it to the semi-finals. GFFN | Joel Lefevre

Angers forward Ibrahima Niane banned for 2 years after testing positive for Ecstasy and MDMA
Ibrahima Nian/ X Ibrahima Niane, the 26-year-old Senegalese striker currently with Angers SCO, has been suspended from professional football for two years after testing positive for ecstasy and MDMA. The French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) announced the ban, effective from March 31, 2025, and lasting until March 31, 2027. The ban prohibits Niane from participating in any professional competitions, training sessions, camps, and friendly matches. According to a report by L'Équipe, Niane was unable to explain the presence of these substances in his system during the investigation, leading to the strict sanction. Doping suspension hits at contract end Niane's contract with Angers was due to expire on June 30, 2025, with no extension offered by the club. Last season, he made 30 appearances during Angers' promotion campaign from Ligue 2 but did not score any league goals. In the current season, Niane played 27 matches and scored three goals, helping Angers maintain their place in Ligue 1. However, he had already been excluded from the first-team squad after injuring a teammate during a training-ground clash in early April 2025. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Angers subsequently released him alongside six other first-team players, as reported by The Sun and other outlets. A Promising career now in doubt Niane's career began with high promise. He honed his skills at Senegal's Generation Foot Academy, finishing as the top scorer in the Senegalese Ligue 1 with 19 goals in 18 matches during the 2017 season, leading his club to a national championship. At 18, he signed with FC Metz in France, helping the club gain promotion to Ligue 1 after a brief relegation. The 2020-2021 season showed strong potential with six goals in six matches and a Player of the Month award in September. He was also close to being called up to the Senegal national team under coach Aliou Cissé. However, a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament injury in his right knee derailed his progress, and he has managed no more than three goals per season since returning to play. Official statements and club records Angers SCO stated: "Initially signed on loan from Metz on January 31, 2023, Ibrahima Niane joined Angers SCO on a permanent contract the following summer. The Senegalese striker scored six goals and supplied three assists in 76 games in all competitions." Former Senegal Under-20 international Niane played a key role in Metz's promotion before his transfer to Angers. The AFLD emphasized that Niane "may not participate in any form of professional competition," including all training and friendly matches. Meanwhile, Niane has returned to Senegal to consider his next steps in football amid this uncertain period.
