Visually impaired MBBS student to be examined by panel
Jaipur: A single judge bench of
Rajasthan High Court
Tuesday directed medical authorities to constitute an expert committee to examine the capabilities and potential of a 23-year-old MBBS student who became visually impaired following a road accident.
As she was not allowed to pursue her MBBS further after completing two years, she approached the HC seeking the quashing of the order that disqualified her from pursuing her studies.
The court also asked the committee to suggest modalities and methodologies for her to complete the remaining MBBS course.
The bench of Justice Anoop Kumar Dhand gave these directions while hearing a petition by Anikta Singodia, a resident of Murlipura in Jaipur.
"Ankita got admitted to the MBBS course in Aug 2014 and successfully completed her first and second year by 2017. On April 7, 2017, she met with a road accident in which she sustained a serious head injury, skull fracture, and the injury ultimately led to the loss of 100% of her vision," Shailesh Prakash Sharma, counsel for the petitioner, told the court.
Later, a medical board gave an opinion on June 12, 2020, that she should be allowed to pursue her MBBS. However, a subsequent medical board expressed a contrary view, saying she may not be able to effectively discharge the duty of a doctor.
Justice Dhand said with a determined vision, relentless hard work, and the courage to take the plunge, individuals with visual impairment can conquer their challenges and thrive in their chosen fields.
