That's according to the official website, which promises "[Part 1] "Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery" to be released in 2026!" Plus, per the press release, this is the first of a series of films (via Anime News Network). Though, at this point, it's unclear if a season 3 will happen eventually. A visual has also been unveiled for the new film, which you can see below. Made in Abyss follows a young orphan girl named Riko in a world that features the titular Abyss, an unexplored, mysterious place full of creatures and relics. Riko wants to become an Abyss explorer, AKA a Cave Raider, like her mother. In the caves, she comes across Reg, a robot/human hybrid. The first season of the anime premiered in 2017 and was followed by a movie titled Dawn of the Deep Soul in 2020, with season 2 arriving in 2022. There have also been two compilation movies, which were both released in 2019. A sequel to season 2 was first announced back in 2023. Back in 2021, it was reported that a live-action movie was in the works, though there have been no updates since. Masayuki Kojima will return to direct the new animated film. Returning cast members include Mariya Ise as Reg, Miyu Tomita as Riko, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa. Elsewhere in anime movie news, the US and UK is still waiting for Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which is arriving on September 12. The film has been Japan's number one movie for three weeks in a row, and, with 17.63 billion yen grossed so far, it's landed at number 10 on Japan's all time box office ranking. It's closing in on Howl's Moving Castle, too, which grossed 19.6 billion yen and sits at number nine. San Diego Comic-Con's ‘Aztec Batman' Trailer Explores Mythos, Culture, and Justice In a New Light

During San Diego Comic-Con, HBO Max finally showcased its upcoming DC Studios animated Batman movie, Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. The film, also known as Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperios, offers a new take on the Caped Crusader's storied mythos. According to HBO Max Latin America's press release, its story will center on 'a young Aztec boy named Yohualli Coatl, whose father, village leader Toltecatzin, is murdered by Spanish Conquistadors. Coatl flees to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of looming danger. Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma's temple, and avenge his father's death.' Aztec Batman was first announced in 2022 in celebration of the DC hero's 83rd anniversary. The animated series is being created in collaboration with Warner Bros. Animation, Particular Crowd, Mexico's Anima, and Book of Life producer Chatrone. While the animated project has a lot of hands involved, it's being helmed by a familiar hand in Juan Meza-León, storyboard artist of the Harley Quinn Animated Series fame. Meza-León will co-write and direct the film. A new legend rises. AZTEC BATMAN: CLASH OF THE EMPIRES is coming to Digital 9/19. — Warner Bros. Entertainment (@WBHomeEnt) July 25, 2025Aztec Batman will serve as the second international reimagining of the Dark Knight, presented through a different cultural lens. The other of which is 2018's animated film, Batman Ninja. While Batman Ninja and its 2025 sequel, Batman Ninja vs. Yakuza League, set the Caped Crusader in a modern-day setting, isekai adventures notwithstanding, Aztec Batman presents its version of the DC hero steeped in the period piece, where colonialism is intertwined with his vigilanteism while maintaining Batman's essence. In an interview with Anime News Network, Meza-León elaborated on how their version of Batman, despite coming from a wealthy family, will face challenges from the class system that would have influenced a young boy in Aztec culture. 'He goes through tragedy at the hands of the conquistadors. So that's where you get the loss of the parents and also the loss of his village. That motivates him and pushes him into a journey that, unbeknownst to him, is being led by the deities that guide him into becoming the bat warrior,' Meza-León told Anime News Network. 'We try to be as faithful as we can to the essence of the characters, whether it's Batman, Joker, or Two-Face. They're completely new characters with different origins, but you can still see the spirit of their comic counterparts.' Aside from the obvious cultural and historical influences, Aztec Batman producer García de Letona told Anime News Network that the movie was inspired by Batman: The Animated Series, Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and a bunch of comic books. DC fans will no doubt have to keep their eyes peeled to spot easter eggs from. Aztec Batman is slated to release digitally on September 19. Want more io9 news? 'Fullmetal Alchemist' to launch Webtoon edition in full colour from May 7

Fullmetal Alchemist will officially debut on the English-language Webtoon platform on May 7, bringing Hiromu Arakawa's acclaimed manga to a wider digital audience. The release will feature the series in full colour and restructured for Webtoon's vertical-scroll format. According to Anime News Network, this adaptation is seen as a significant moment for the franchise, which has continued to attract fans more than a decade after its conclusion. The new format is designed to introduce Edward and Alphonse Elric's story to a mobile-first audience, providing a new way to engage with Arakawa's detailed storytelling and artwork. The move to Webtoon includes recolouring the original black-and-white pages and adapting the layout to suit mobile reading habits. While some long-time readers may have concerns about the format change, others may welcome the opportunity to experience the story with new pacing and accessibility. Fullmetal Alchemist originally ran from 2001 to 2010 in Monthly Shōnen Gangan and has been widely praised for its world-building and moral complexity. The series inspired two anime adaptations, including Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, as well as films and spin-offs. The Webtoon release aligns with the rise of digital comic consumption, offering a gateway for new readers while giving existing fans another way to enjoy the series.

Worst anime series of 2025 that failed to meet expectations

Despite an exciting lineup and high-profile names, the Spring 2025 anime season delivered more than a few crushing disappointments. From broken adaptations to conceptually confused narratives and flat-out boring execution, several shows that seemed promising on paper ended up frustrating or boring viewers. Some had production issues, others were plagued by terrible pacing or forgettable characters, and a few simply lacked direction altogether. Even star creators and beloved source material couldn't save these titles from spiraling into mediocrity—or worse. Below is a breakdown of the most underwhelming anime series of the season, as selected by the Anime News Network, and why they failed to live up to the expectations of fans and critics alike. List of worst anime that are biggest disappointments of 2025 as cited by Anime News Network 7. #COMPASS2.0 ANIMATION PROJECT: A beige battle royale Attempting to blend elements of Fate/stay night and .hack, this adaptation of a mobile 3v3 battle game felt like an uninspired mishmash of better shows. With bland visuals, unmemorable fights, and barely any world-building, #COMPASS2.0 lacked identity and engagement. Even its main characters failed to leave an impression, and the story felt like a copy-paste job with the opacity turned down. Gacha adaptations usually shine through quirky or charming characters, but this one couldn't even manage that. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Wiesbaden: GEERS sucht 700 Testhörer vor 1972 geboren GEERS Undo 6. The Shiunji Family Children: Mixed messages and mild misery What could have been a thoughtful exploration of familial boundaries and identity became another cookie-cutter harem with uncomfortable themes. The series attempts to tackle taboo step-sibling romance with some depth, but quickly abandons nuance in favour of tired anime tropes like awkward fanservice and forced romantic setups. Instead of making a statement, it constantly contradicts itself, creating an experience that's both boring and cringe-inducing. 5. Yandere Dark Elf: Not crazy enough to be fun Despite its provocative title, Yandere Dark Elf lacks both the intensity and entertainment one might expect. Its supposedly obsessive protagonist is mostly tame, and the romantic dynamic never moves past mildly awkward flirting. Even the ecchi elements fall flat due to lazy animation and heavy censorship. With no real drama, no standout visuals, and no edge, the show is little more than a hollow fantasy. 4. Go! Go! Loser Ranger! Season 2: Style over substance Season 1 offered clever satire and exciting energy, but Season 2 spirals into chaotic pacing and storytelling overload. Plot twists are stacked too quickly for any to land meaningfully, and the production quality noticeably drops. What should have been a climactic season feels rushed and confusing, leaving fans wondering what happened to the slick, smart storytelling of the original. 3. The Beginning After The End: A misfire from the Start Adapted from a popular web novel and webtoon, The Beginning After The End suffers from flat visuals and even flatter characters. While the production meets minimal standards, the writing is stale and overly reliant on genre clichés. Its protagonist, meant to be a unique reincarnated king, ends up as another overpowered and underdeveloped isekai lead surrounded by lifeless side characters. Even fans of the source material found little to praise. 2. Lazarus: Wasted talent and empty promises With names like Shinichirō Watanabe and John Wick's Chad Stahelski attached, Lazarus had sky-high expectations. But instead of a gripping sci-fi thriller, viewers got a confusing mess of disconnected plotlines, weak character writing, and music that only made the pacing feel more sluggish. Despite excellent action choreography and visual potential, the show fails to make viewers care about any of its characters or its supposedly urgent stakes. 1. Your Forma: The Sci-fi thriller that forgot its story Topping the list is Your Forma, a sci-fi detective drama with a compelling premise that falls apart due to one fatal flaw—it skips the first volume of its own story. Viewers unfamiliar with the light novels are thrown into a confusing world with no context or character development. While it tries to explore themes of AI and memory, it instead becomes a frustrating watch full of bland visuals, awkward pacing, and an incompetent protagonist who spends more time being rescued than solving anything. A promising concept wasted by a bafflingly bad adaptation.
