MCC to undertake deer census on 365-acre campus

Chennai: Madras Christian College, one of the few campuses with a thriving wildlife population, is planning to undertake a deer census. According to the previous census conducted in 2022, it has 85 to 90 spotted deer on its 365-acre campus. Due to the college's various initiatives, the campus has witnessed the birth of many fawns in recent times, indicating an increase in its population. The Wildlife Conservation Club and Scrub Society, the two clubs within the college, will jointly organise the census from the last week of Aug. Student volunteers from both clubs will be involved in the census. It will be conducted once every two weeks for a year," said Anita Pearline Esther, president of Scrub Society and a faculty member from the department of zoology, MCC. The census is also expected to reveal more about the behaviour of the deer and the plants they favour, among other details. "We are also planning to undertake a campaign among students through skits and street plays against domesticating the wild animals. Students offer the animals biscuits, among other edible items which are not healthy for them. This awareness will help us to protect them," said S Saranya, vice-president of the Wildlife Conservation Club. In collaboration with Blue Cross, the club also sterilized and vaccinated 41 dogs and two cats on the campus to reduce the threat to deer and other animals. The club is exploring innovative strategies to avoid conflict between wildlife and domestic animals. "We are exploring a data-driven landscaping project to map and separate natural territories for wild animals to reduce conflicts often triggered by the search for food," said Paul Wilson, principal of the college and president of the Wildlife Conservation Club. The campus also has peafowl, snakes, mongooses, porcupines, and hares. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
