EU ‘deeply regrets' US sanctions on ICC judges
BRUSSELS, BELGIUM: The EU 'deeply regrets' the US sanctions imposed on four judges of the International Criminal Court (ICC), the European Commission said Friday, voicing full support for the Hague-based court. 'The ICC holds perpetrators of the world's gravest crimes to account and gives victims a voice,' Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen posted on X. 'It must be free to act without pressure.' 'We deeply regret the decision to impose sanctions on four additional individuals,' added commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper. 'We will provide the full support and contribution to ensure the protection of the court and its staff,' she told reporters. The sanctions imposed Thursday – in part over the ICC arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – come as Washington ramps up its efforts to neuter the court. Israel urges ICC to drop arrest warrants against PM Neither United States nor Israel are party to the Rome Statute that established the court in 2002, to prosecute individuals for the world's gravest crimes when countries are unwilling or unable to do so themselves. Two of the targeted judges, Beti Hohler of Slovenia and Reine Alapini-Gansou of Benin, took part in proceedings that led to the warrant being issued for Netanyahu last November. The other two, Luz del Carmen Ibanez Carranza of Peru and Solomy Balungi Bossa of Uganda, were part of proceedings that led to a probe into allegations US forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan. European Council chief Antonio Costa earlier underscored the EU's support for the ICC, which he said 'does not stand against nations – it stands against impunity.' 'We must protect its independence and integrity. The rule of law must prevail over the rule of power,' Costa wrote on X.

EU insists that complete ceasefire by Russia is necessary for negotiations to begin
The European Union continues to insist that any peace talks can only begin after Russia unconditionally agrees to cease fire. Source: European Commission spokeswoman Anitta Hipper on 12 May at a briefing in Brussels, as reported by European Pravda Details: Hipper said that Russia must cease fire before peace talks can begin. "Our position is clear that we support the proposal of an unconditional 30-day ceasefire starting today. Also, President Zelenskyy has accepted the proposal without preconditions, also reaffirming Ukraine's repeated willingness to agree to a ceasefire. So now Russia must respond just as clearly, and a ceasefire is urgently needed for the peace talks to take place," Hipper said. She added that "in order to go into any peace talks, we should have a clear, unconditional ceasefire". Hipper stressed that the European Union "needs to continue to put pressure on Russia" because as Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Police, said, "they are playing games and you cannot trust Putin". Background: As reported, the German government said that if a ceasefire is not established in Ukraine by the end of Monday, Berlin, together with its European partners, will begin the process of preparing new sanctions against Russia. On Saturday 10 May, Germany, France, the UK and Poland called on Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire starting on Monday. Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin did not respond to the proposal for a 30-day pause in hostilities, but said he was ready for direct talks with Kyiv in Istanbul on Thursday 15 May. EU reacts to investigation into Russia's murder of journalist Roshchyna
The European Commission has stated that the latest details of how Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna was killed in Russian captivity are further evidence of the cruelty of the Russian system and evidence that the occupation is a deadly threat to Ukrainians. Source: European Pravda; stated by European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper at a daily briefing on 30 April Details: Hipper commented on the journalists' investigation, which collected all the information about the torture and death in Russian captivity of freelance writer of Ukrainska Pravda Viktoriia Roshchyna. Quote from Anitta Hipper: "Russia does not miss any opportunity to show its despicable brutality towards the Ukrainians by killing and torturing, as it was in the case of Viktoriia Roshchyna, a brave Ukrainian journalist who was brutally not only killed but also tortured. It also clearly shows that life under Russiaʼs occupation is not an option. It is not a safe option for the Ukrainians. For journalists, her courage will always be remembered, and Russia should be and we make everything possible in our power to make sure that they remain accountable for all these war crimes and atrocities committed." European Commission reacts to North Korean troops' deployment in war against Ukraine, calls it "desperation call from Russia"
European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper has stated that the deployment of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine demonstrates that Russia is not interested in peace and is a sign of its desperation, as it has been isolated and weakened by EU sanctions. Source: Hipper at a briefing on 28 April, as reported by European Pravda Quote: "When it comes to the cooperation with Russia and Russia's deepening military cooperation with North Korea, this sends a very clear message. Russia is not interested in peace. On the contrary, Russia's goal remains to suppress Ukraine, and Russia is desperately seeking any help they can get to help with this illegal aggression, including from actors which are severely disturbing and disrupting the global peace and security. So it is a desperation call from Russia to rely on such actors." Details: Hipper said that this only confirms how "isolated" Russia is and "how much we are weakening them, including with the sanctions, so hence the desperation". "So this is why we are continuing to do even more to continue to work on the 17th sanction package and to support Ukraine," Hipper added. Background: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un confirmed the deployment of troops to Russia to fight against Ukraine, stating that this complies with the provisions of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between North Korea and Russia. Later, Russian ruler Vladimir Putin confirmed the involvement of North Korean troops on Russia's side in the war against Ukraine and "thanked" them. Meanwhile, Western media reported that US President Donald Trump's administration had supposedly already begun behind-the-scenes preparations to attempt to resume dialogue with North Korea. As China eases up on EU lawmakers, Brussels stays the course on Xinjiang sanctions
The European Union will not remove sanctions on Chinese officials over alleged human rights abuses in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, even as Beijing moves to lift some of its retaliatory sanctions on EU lawmakers. Advertisement The Post reported earlier that China and the European Parliament were in the 'final stages' of lifting the punitive measures on sitting members, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks. However a spokeswoman for the EU's diplomatic arm, which oversees foreign policy and sanctions, said on Thursday it had no plans to reciprocate because it had not observed an improvement in conditions in the far western region of China 'The EU has not observed changes in the human rights situation in China/Xinjiang. Therefore, the Council maintains the China/Xinjiang-related designations,' Anitta Hipper, spokeswoman for foreign affairs and security policy, told the Post. The tit-for-tat sanctioning blitz took place in March 2021, when Brussels joined the United States, Britain and Canada in slapping visa bans and asset freezes on several Chinese officials and one entity. Advertisement At the time, the EU said they were sanctioned for their roles in 'serious human rights violations in China, in particular large-scale arbitrary detentions and degrading treatment inflicted upon Uygurs and people from other Muslim ethnic minorities'.
