Italy's Annamaria Serturini trying to close down Spain's Aitana Bonmati in their Women's Euro 2025 Group B clash at Stadion Wankdorf in Bern, Switzerland on July 11, 2025. OBERENTFELDEN, Switzerland – Italy might be heading into their Women's Euro semi-final against reigning champions England as underdogs on Tuesday, but the squad believe that they have earned the right to be feared by the other teams remaining in the competition. The Italians scored a late winner to beat Norway 2-1 in their quarter-final to make it into the last four of the tournament for the first time since 1997, setting up the meeting with England in Geneva on Tuesday. Germany and Spain face off in Zurich a day later. 'It's not a coincidence to be among the top four in Europe. The path we took with (coach) Mr. (Andrea) Soncin is very important. He brought us so much tranquility, enthusiasm and security,' midfielder Annamaria Serturini told reporters on Sunday. 'I think we can see how much the group can make a difference, and today I tell you that if we are there, it is because we deserve it ... it is not a coincidence if we are there, so I welcome that the other teams start to fear us.' The 27-year-old said that the sense of unity in the squad had filled them with confidence as they prepare to take on an England side that squeezed past Sweden and into the semi-finals after a dramatic penalty shoot-out. 'We have the possibility to make everyone believe in us,' Serturini said. 'We have a great goal that we are all aware of, so we don't have a lot of pressure, because it's right to live, to enjoy every moment and every training, because it's really something magnificent to go through every day with all the people who are here.' To succeed against England, she said that Italy will have to make the most of their chances. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Italy women's football team dreams big ahead of Euro quarter-final
A win and a draw in their opening two Women's Euro Group B matches rendered Italy's 3-1 defeat by Spain on Friday irrelevant as they progressed to the knockout stage of the competition for the first time since 2013. Top-four finishers at six of the first seven Euro competitions, Italy have endured a barren spell since and have made the knockout round only twice in the 21st century. Friday's joy at the final whistle, despite the loss to Spain, showed what it meant to the Italian players. 'A magical night. We all dreamed together, we all dreamed because in the end everyone dreamed for a long time. We have reached our great goal and we do not want to stop, we want to continue dreaming and making Italians dream,' midfielder Annamaria Serturini said on Saturday. ''We have a great desire to do well, to continue dreaming, to continue writing important pages of a story that is only at the beginning.' Italy finished second in Group B on four points, five behind Spain and one ahead of Belgium, who beat Portugal 2-1 to prevent them from progressing. Those results set Italy up for a quarter-final meeting with Group A winners Norway in Geneva on Wednesday and, having survived a tricky group stage, the Italians are relaxed and full of self-belief. 'The next step is to prepare for the match against Norway, to take care of the details, which are the most important thing, and to go out on the field with a smile and a carefree attitude to live this magnificent dream,' Serturini said. 'We should be able to take advantage of the opportunities we will have by raising the level,' fellow forward Michaela Cambiaghi said. 'Maybe we will have fewer opportunities, so we will have to be good at taking advantage of them.' - Reuters
