Scattered debris on Main Road raises concerns

Residents are encouraged to report illegal dumping, as it continues to be an issue in Midrand. Concerns are rising about the ongoing illegal dumping along Main Road, near Leeuwkop Prison. Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe has spoken out about the persistence of waste left by the roadside, with plastics, papers, and scattered debris visible along the sideroad. 'I reported this issue three weeks ago, at the councillor forum meeting, yet no action has been taken. The problem is located near Leuwkop Prison, by the bridge. It is concerning that someone would think it's acceptable to dispose of their rubbish in this way.' She insists that residents must actively report any instances of illegal dumping they observe to the city. The City of Johannesburg's by-laws address illegal dumping, with the Waste Management By-Laws 2021 being a key document. Illegal dumping on private land falls under the jurisdiction of the Environmental Health Directorate. These by-laws likely outline regulations, potential penalties, and enforcement procedures regarding waste disposal to maintain environmental health. For the removal of illegal dumping, residents can call Joburg Connect on 0860 562 874 or 0860-JOBURG. Pikitup only attends to illegal dumping on pavements, streets, and council-owned land, while illegal dumping in parks is the responsibility of City Parks. To report illegal dumping to Pikitup, residents may call 011 688 1500 or email: [email protected]. DA Ward 132 marks Mandela Day with hands-on community clean-up

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ward 132 rolled up their sleeves on Mandela Day to give back to the community through a clean-up and upliftment initiative in Midrand. Read more: Ladles of Love packages love to children on Mandela Day Led by Ward councillor Annette Deppe, DA members, activists, and community volunteers spent their 67 minutes of service starting with a street clean-up on Greig Street. Armed with gloves, weed-eaters, paint brushes, and hacksaws, the group dedicated their time to tidying the area and giving the Angel Tots Academy a fresh coat of paint. 'We did some painting, had Johannesburg Roads Agency install stop signs, and had many activists help cut and gather the grass,' said Deppe. 'We chose Angel Tots because they support the DA, and we also wanted to uplift the crèche – to give it a new touch for the children and the residents who rely on it.' The initiative received support from local businesses, with Spar Vorna Valley donating refuse bags for the clean-up. 'I want to thank all our activists for showing up today,' Deppe added. 'And a special thank you to Spar for supporting us as always in Midrand.' Among those who joined the initiative were DA Gauteng Provincial Legislature member Michael Sun and regional representative Ria Humans. Sun emphasised the community-driven spirit of the day. 'I really want to give a great shout-out to Spar in Vorna Valley. We, as the DA, are out here in Vorna Valley, Midrand today on Mandela Day to give back to the community where we are cleaning the streets, fixing pavements, and installing stop-signage to ensure the traffic is safe.'
