"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Reboot Pilot Casts Ryan Kiera Armstrong in Titular Role
Yara Sameh "In every generation, there is a chosen one', — so says the opening narration in early episodes of the classic cult series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' reboot pilot at Hulu has found its new slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong. Armstrong has been cast in a lead role in the pilot opposite returning star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The pilot was originally announced at Hulu back in February. While the exact plot details are under wraps, sources previously said the pilot will focus on a new slayer with Gellar appearing in a recurring role as Buffy. 'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,' Gellar said in a statement. 'To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.' Gellar also shared a video on Instagram in which she tells Armstrong she got the lead role. Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar executive produces, along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 'We are so overjoyed to have found this generation's slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one,' the Zuckermans said. Armstrong most recently appeared in the Disney+ 'Star Wars' series 'Skeleton Crew.' Her other TV credits include 'Anne with an E' at Netflix, 'American Horror Story,' and the upcoming FX series 'The Lowdown.' In film, she led the 'Firestarter' reboot opposite Zac Efron and has also starred in big budget films like 'The Tomorrow War' and Marvel's 'Black Widow.' Armstrong first broke out in the feature adaptation of 'The Art of Racing in the Rain.' 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' originated as a film starring Kristy Swanson in the title role. Whedon wrote the film with Fran Kuzui directing. It was released in 1992. Five years later, the series version starring Gellar debuted on The WB. It would air on The WB for its first five seasons before airing its final two seasons on UPN. The cast also included Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, and James Marsters among others. Boreanaz would then head up the spinoff series 'Angel' at The WB for five seasons. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War

Buffy reboot casts 15-year-old Netflix star as new slayer
Sarah Michelle Gellar is passing on the slayer baton to a rising Netflix star, 15, in a major Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot update. The long-awaited revival – as yet untitled – stars Gellar in her iconic role as Buffy Summers and she will also be executive producing the project. The Scooby-Doo actor has now announced that Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play 'this generation's slayer' aka 'introverted high school student by day and monster hunter by night. Some may know Armstrong for her role as Minnie May in popular Netflix series Anne with an E. Since then she has featured in plenty more TV shows including as Alma Gardner in American Horror Story and Fern in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. In an Instagram post celebrating her casting, Gellar wrote: 'I want to introduce you to [Armstrong]. 'From the moment I saw Ryan's audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side. To have that kind of emotional intelligence , and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room. Welcome to #NewSunnydale #btvs.' This was accompanied with a video of Gellar telling Armstrong the happy news, in which the young actor said: 'I'm so honored, thank you for trusting me,' with tears in her eyes.' And in her own Instagram caption added: 'I am so excited for this journey with you [Sarah] I am in awe of you. 'Thank you Chloe Zhao for trusting me, I'm such a fan. I'm still in so much shock and disbelief. [Nora and Lilla] I'm so SO excited to work with you both. Finally, thank you to my amazing parents that have allowed me to do my dream, love uuuu. I WONT LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!' The pilot, arriving on Hulu, is director by Oscar winner Chloe Zhao of Nomadland fame and co-written by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (behind Natasha Lyonne's Poker Face). In a statement, the Zuckerman's wrote: 'We are so overjoyed to have found this generation's slayer in Ryan Kiera Armstrong, she absolutely blew us away — there is no question in our mind that she is the chosen one.' Buffy star Emma Caulfield celebrated in the comments, writing: 'Tears'. And plenty of fans celebrated the exciting news. 'The new chosen one. All the 80s/90s and early 00 babies are SCREAMING right now,' ryanfent0n shared. Had this reboot been announced a decade ago, I may have been naive enough to be excited – but the news has only made me concerned, with good reason. The series was pioneering at the time, stamping on stereotypes and progressively exploring LGBTQ+ narratives and characters. The series had complex heroes and villains and subverted all the typical horror and teen-drama tropes in the best possible way. The legacy it has left is huge, which means that any reboot has the potential to tarnish the reputation. Particularly when the original series managed to strike such a unique chord with the audience of the time and become a cultural phenomenon – how can that success be replicated in a way that feels organic and not a cringe-inducing stretch for the series to be as 'woke' as it once was? Another key problem is that some of the most beloved characters – the vampires – can't return to the series. 'Congratulations!!!! Sunnydale is in safe hands! I can't wait to see you save the world,' mrbrianlloyd added. 'Congratssss! This is going to be epic! So excited to see you and SMG dust some vamps together,' nadsreviews praised. As for who else will be joining (or returning) to the cast, it remains to be seen. Earlier this year, there were reports that Gellar had been in talks with the late Michelle Trachtenberg to reprise her role as sister Dawn before her death. And she was recently seen reuniting with former co-star Alyson Hannigan who played best friend Willow. More Trending In a statement addressing the reboot rumours in February, Gellar explained it had been a many-year long process to finally 'land on an idea' for a possible reboot. 'This has been a long process, and it's not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there. 'I feel so lucky to be on this journey with these four unbelievably talented women, all of whom love 'Buffy' as much as I do. And as much as you do. Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you,' she stated. View More » There is currently no release date for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Got a story? 'Fourth Wing' TV series: Josh Heuston linked to Xaden role as Moira Walley-Beckett leads adaptation
Development of the Fourth Wing television adaptation continues to gain traction as speculation intensifies around actor Josh Heuston's potential casting as Xaden Riorson. The adaptation of Rebecca Yarros' bestselling Empyrean series is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, with Moira Walley-Beckett attached as showrunner. First announced in late 2023, the series is based on the romantasy saga that follows Violet Sorrengail's perilous journey at Basgiath War College, where elite students are trained to become dragon riders. Set in a high-stakes fantasy world, the story combines military academy politics, magical warfare, and forbidden romance. No official casting has been confirmed, though Josh Heuston's name has been linked to either the role of Xaden or Bodhi. When questioned, Heuston commented, 'You have to ask the scribes, I suppose,' further fuelling fan discussions. Author Rebecca Yarros has publicly maintained her stance on accurate representation, stating that Xaden will be portrayed by a person of colour. 'They know how staunch I am against whitewashing Xaden,' Yarros said, reaffirming the series' commitment to diversity in casting. Moira Walley-Beckett, best known for her work on Breaking Bad and Anne with an E, has earned high praise from Yarros for her handling of the adaptation. During the launch of Onyx Storm in January 2025, Yarros confirmed reading multiple drafts of the pilot script and described it as 'phenomenal,' adding, 'I kicked my feet the entire time—I love it.' Production timelines remain under wraps, with no confirmed release date. The series is expected to follow the narrative arc of the five-book Empyrean series, which includes Fourth Wing, Iron Flame, and Onyx Storm. Books four and five are currently in development.
