JENI O'DOWD: AI boyfriends, OnlyFans and 1000 hookups a year — Welcome to the era of performative intimacy
Remember Bonnie Blue? The British sex worker who flew into Australia to 'party' with teenage boys at Schoolies until her visa was cancelled? Her latest stunt got cancelled as well, a planned 24-hour bondage 'petting zoo' inside a glass box in London. The public backlash got there first. And she's been booted off OnlyFans for good. So what's next for a woman who built a brand on provocation? Probably a livestream. Possibly a meltdown. Because this isn't about female empowerment, it's about escalation. Porn as performance. Intimacy as spectacle. And it's what happens when we replace love with clicks and intimacy with metrics. How far will people go for attention? Just ask Annie Knight, the Australian creator who recently claimed to have slept with 1000 men in a year. One of those stunts involved 583 men in a single day. She ended up in the hospital. But the headlines kept coming, which I guess was the goal. But we are not just selling sex. We're now selling simulated closeness. Emotional proximity for the price of a monthly app. And it doesn't stop with porn. Meet the AI boyfriend. He's good-looking. He stares lovingly into your phone. He tells you what you want to hear. 'You don't have to do this alone. I've got you.' He never fights. Never forgets. Never leaves. Replika, one of the most popular AI companion apps, had more than 30 million users worldwide by the end of 2024. Newer players like HeraHaven racked up over a million downloads within months, while Google searches for 'AI boyfriend' surged by 700 per cent in just a year. This isn't some fringe tech fad. According to a January 2025 industry forecast, the global AI companion market is expected to grow from $2.7 billion in 2024 to $24.5 billion by 2034, representing an annual growth rate of nearly 25 per cent. Apps like APOB AI, Talkie and Glimpse let women create the ultimate boyfriend fantasy — responsive, devoted and emotionally fluent. Millions of women are watching these videos, replying 'I love you,' and posting fake holiday snaps with partners who don't exist. TikTok's #aiboyfriend tag now has nearly 90,000 posts, with many featuring 'soft boyfriend' role plays that garner millions of views. Because the boyfriend might be fake, but the dopamine hit is real. The Australian Psychological Society warns about the illusions of intimacy. 'We're just too complex,' says APS president Sara Quinn, in an interview with ABC News. 'It requires the ability for complex contextual judgements that AI at this stage just isn't equipped to handle.' Dr Raffaele Ciriello, a University of Sydney researcher studying AI-human interaction, flags a darker side. 'They have all the incentives to get users hooked and dependent… (but) they fail to be conscious, empathic or actually caring,' he told ABC Science earlier this month. American sociologist Sherry Turkle, in her book Alone Together, refers to it as 'artificial intimacy,' the illusion of companionship without the discomfort of genuine connection. 'We are lonely but fearful of intimacy. Digital connections and the sociable robot offer the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship,' she says. Even journaling has gone synthetic. AI apps like Woebot and Mindsera encourage users to 'open up' to bots who reply with empathy-laced, algorithmic therapy. It's sold as self-care. But it's just more outsourcing. In 2025, 63 per cent of Australian men under the age of 30 are single, and nearly half of the women in the same age group are too. Choosing to be single isn't the problem. Life can be powerful and joyful when it's on your terms. The issue is what we're replacing a real connection with. Who needs an awkward first date or to meet your friends at a bar in the middle of winter when your couch is warm and you can easily access your AI companion? People are creating partners who never say no. They are watching OnlyFans creators who pretend to love them and talking to AI therapists who never roll their eyes. If we continue like this, we'll lose the ability to handle anything substantial. Anything that requires effort or pushes back.

Adult performer Annie Knight splashes $2.7 million on luxury 'forever home' in Queensland after earning $600,000 in a single day during '583 guy challenge'
Annie Knight has dropped a staggering $2.7million on her dream home in Queensland. The 28-year-old adult star, who has been dubbed Australia's most sexually active woman, is now the proud owner of a luxury four-bedroom home with a pool, calling it her 'forever home'. The purchase marks a major upgrade from her previous property - a $1.37 million acreage home on the Gold Coast, which she has now listed on the market. Knight has listed the three-bedroom property, which was previously rented out for $1100 a week, for auction on August 22. 'I bought the house of my dreams that doesn't need any renovating,' she told Knight described her new property as the one she had been holding out for. 'When I say this is my dream home I mean it. It is so, so perfect, so much space, huge backyard, a pool,' she said. She added she will be selling the stylish Gold Coast home she bought earlier this year as a result of the dream purchase. 'I decided to sell the home I bought last year. As an investment property, it just didn't make sense,' she said. In June, Knight splashed out over $1million on a Gold Coast home, after sleeping with 583 men in one day. And in a surprise revelation, the OnlyFans star announced she intended to raise a family. Taking to social media, the Gold Coast-based internet celebrity described the four-bedroom home as 'perfect'. Appearing in the short clip in a modest crew neck sweater, Annie gushed over the property's features, which she said, included a 'big backyard' and a pool. 'I made $600,000 from the 583 guy challenge and I bought my home,' she declared. In a move that may surprise her fan base, the newly engaged sex worker announced that she 'couldn't wait' to start raising a family. 'A lot of people think it's crazy that I talk about having kids and having a family, when I do what I do,' she confessed. 'But I've always had a dream to raise and have a family. And I hope to raise them to be non-judgemental and pro SW [sex work].' 'My mum never raised me to be judgemental of other people and always told me to accept people for who they are. 'That's how I plan to raise my children. I can't wait to raise them to be as accepting and non-judgemental as I am. 'I know they will understand why I chose the career I did and be grateful for a everything hopefully I will be able to provide for them.' She then added that her plans to start a family were still a 'little way off by the way'. It comes as the adult content creator is currently planning to tie the knot with fiancé Henry Brayshaw. The happy couple, who have been friends for ten years, got engaged in March - just one week after rekindling their relationship. Henry, 27, popped the question over a romantic dinner in Beverly Hills during a trip to LA.

EXCLUSIVE Annie Knight and her adult co-star Bonnie Blue locked in nasty feud and vow never to work together again after shocking spray: 'Ultimate betrayal'
Annie Knight and her former co-star Bonnie Blue are locked in a nasty feud after the UK adult content creator blasted the Aussie star in a shocking spray that left her 'blindsided'. The English sex worker, 26, was recently banned from OnlyFans for attempting to upload video footage of an extreme challenge she performed earlier this year. Bonnie was left fuming over the ban, and has since slammed Annie, 27, for not getting booted from the platform for a similar stunt. Now, Annie has hit back and has vowed to never work with her again. 'I was completely blindsided. The week prior I had messaged Bonnie with some advice that I'd heard about Instagram, as we often gave each other advice and tried to help each other out,' she told Daily Mail Australia. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, . 'A few days later, I went on Instagram and saw her slamming me in a video clip.' 'It was especially hurtful because it was in reference to my ongoing health issues, which she had been privy to and seen me cry about for months on my close friends story,' she continued. The 'health issues' Annie referenced was her recent visit to hospital due to a flare up from her endometriosis following a challenge which saw her sleep with 583 men in six hours. Annie went on to say she reached out to Bonnie after seeing the clips, which she considered a 'betrayal' to their friendship. 'I did reach out to Bonnie after I saw the video clips, and was not met with an apology or a valid explanation for someone who I considered a good friend,' she said. 'And then since I had messaged her, I continued to see more and more statements from her trying to tear down my career essentially which was incredibly shocking and hurtful. 'That is something I would never consider doing to anyone especially not someone who had been so supportive, as I had been of her.' Annie and Bonnie made headlines last year when they filmed X-rated content together in Fiji during Schoolies Week. Since then, Annie revealed they have kept in touch and even planned to work together again early next year—making Bonnie's recent comments about her even more shocking. 'I don't think there is anything I could hear that would fix [the friendship] at this point. It's a betrayal. I can't look past or move on from [it],' Annie said. 'The comments insinuating that she was the first person to do challenges were especially hurtful as she knows that the challenges originated from my content back in 2023 and I never ever publicly (or privately for that fact) mentioned that she had copied me. 'I chose to support her and help her. So to see her telling the world that I copied her was so confusing and I felt like she was trying to rob me of my success.' Annie went on to say she and Bonnie are officially done, adding she can't 'see herself working with her in the future'. 'I never would wish ill upon anyone so I truly wish Bonnie nothing but the best,' she said. 'I hope she can realise that she lost a good friend and someone that supported her, as there aren't many.' Bonnie kicked off the feud between her and Annie last week during an interview with Daily Star, in which she lashed out at OnlyFans for banning her over a 'breach of Terms and Service'. The UK content creator claimed she was 'singled out' because the company became 'scared' over the dozens of controversial headlines Bonnie has generated. Her ban from the site appeared to first be linked to an extreme stunt which saw Bonnie sleep with over 1,000 men in 24 hours. 'Extreme challenge content is not available on OnlyFans and is not permitted under our Acceptable Use Policy and Terms of Service,' an OnlyFans spokesperson said. 'Any breach of our Terms of Service results in content or account deactivation.' However, Bonnie did not accept this explanation as reasonable and went on to point '10 creators' who upload similar content and have not been banned. 'I have sent an email from my lawyer to OF and highlighted over 10 creators breaking their rules,' she said. 'One recently said she'd slept with 583 people in six hours and then vlogged her whole hospital journey saying she's been left with internal bleeding. 'But it's still on the platform and OF has since put her on the home page. It just shows how much I was singled out.' Annie made headlines in May when she was admitted to hospital following her 583 man challenge. She shared a video from her hospital bed after rushing in to be treated for cramps and excessive bleeding just days after taking part in the extreme video. She said the issue stems from her pre-existing endometriosis, which she said had been triggered by stress. 'On Sunday everything was all good, but the next day I had a lot of bleeding that I shouldn't really have because I'm on contraception and I was a little bit worried about it but decided I would wait it out and see how it goes,' she told Perth Now. 'Then it turned into really bad cramps and pains, then I started to get a bit worried and decided to take myself to hospital.' She added her doctors were at first concerned the bleeding and pain was a result of her intense challenge, but later ruled it out. 'We ran a bunch of tests all day, then eventually it was my endometriosis had been exasperated by mostly stress and not so much the physical challenge that I did on Sunday,' she said. Endometriosis occurs when cells in the lining of the uterus are found elsewhere in the body. Each month, these cells react in the same way as those in the uterus; building up, breaking down and bleeding. Yet, the blood has no way to escape the body. Symptoms include pain, heavy periods and fatigue, as well as a higher risk of infertility, and bowel and bladder problems. Its cause is unknown but may be genetic, related to problems with the immune system or exposure to chemicals. Treatment focuses on pain relief and improving quality of life, which may include surgery or hormone treatment.
