Netflix Takes A Bulk Of The World On Shih-Ching Tsou's Cannes Movie ‘Left-Handed Girl'

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix has acquired most of the global rights to Shih-Ching Tsou's Cannes' Critics Week movie Left-Handed Girl. The movie, produced by and co-written by 4x Anora Oscar winner Sean Baker won the Gan Foundation Award as well as the Prix du Rail d'Or following its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Janel Tsai stars as the mother, along with Nina Ye and Shih-Yuan Ma as the children. We heard back on the Croisette that Netflix was very excited about acquiring this movie. 'The original story comes from something my grandfather told me when I was young,' Tsou told Deadline's Melanie Goodfellow in our Cannes Studio. 'He told me the left is the devil's hand, do not use it. At the time I was already 'corrected' as I was originally left-handed, so I didn't really understand, but it stayed in my mind for a long, long time.' 'The story was in my heart for so long, and I really, really want to show how the world how beautiful my country is. This is like a love letter to Taiwan,' Tsou said. Deadline Chief Film Critic Pete Hammond exclaimed, 'Shih-Ching shows strong command of storytelling and shifting tones with high dramatics that could careen out of control but never do, instead keeping us on the edge of our seats. Baker's tight editing really comes into play here and proves worthy of Douglas Sirk at his height. Ultimately what holds it all together are the strong performances all around.' Coming out of the fest, Left-Handed Girl stands at 95% fresh with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Shih-Ching Tsou is a longtime collaborator of Baker's who worked as a producer on his earlier films including Starlet, Tangerine, The Florida Project and Red Rocket. The duo also co-directed a film called Take Out 21 years ago. Both them of co-wrote the movie. Producers are Shih-Ching Tsou, Baker, Mike Goodridge, Jean Labadie and Alice Labadie. Production companies are Left-Handed Girl Film Production, LHG Films LTD, Good Chaos and Le Pacte. Netflix has rights for the majority of the world except for the Baltics, Benelux, Greece, Hong Kong, Israel, Italy, France, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Scandinavia, Poland and Taiwan. Kenan Thompson Clearly Wasn't A Fan Of Morgan Wallen's "Abrupt" "SNL" Exit And Cryptic Instagram Post

Morgan Wallen 's sudden walk-off at the end of this past weekend's SNL is dominating the online discourse. In case you missed it: Morgan was the musical guest on this weekend's episode, with Anora Oscar winner Mikey Madison as the host. Traditionally, everyone — even the host and the guest — stick around while the credits roll on the episode. Here's a photo of Mikey thanking everyone right before the end of the show... And here's what happened right after, when Morgan basically got the hell out of Dodge as soon as possible after whispering something in Mikey's ear. Thank you, Mikey Madison and @MorganWallen! Goodnight! — Saturday Night Live - SNL (@nbcsnl) March 30, 2025 @nbcsnl / Via To seasoned SNL viewers, the whole thing was deeply strange — and things got even stranger when Morgan posted an IG Story shortly afterwards of a private jet set to take off in the middle of the night, with the caption "Get me to God's country." Since then, speculation has swirled as to what actually went down. Sources have claimed that the whole thing is just one lil' misunderstanding, while an SNL writer took very gentle aim at his "God's country" post. Now, longtime SNL cast member Kenan Thompson has weighed in on the whole situation in an interview with Entertainment Weekly — and it sounds like he, too, was a bit weirded out by the situation. "I don't know what goes through people's minds when they decide to do stuff like that," he told the publication, later confirming that he "definitely saw" Morgan's quick dash off set. "I don't know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way. You see somebody before you get a chance to say hi or say good job or anything like that, they just dipping. I thought maybe he had to go to the potty or something." "It's definitely a spike in the norm. We're so used to everybody just turning around and high-fiving us, everybody's saying, 'Good job, good job, good job.' So when there's a departure from that, it's like, hmm, I wonder what that's about?" Kenan went on to say that he "never met" Morgan during rehearsal week, and that he "seems like a complicated individual." He also went on to point out that Morgan isn't necessarily the first SNL musical guest to dip so fast. John Shearer / Getty Images for for Morgan Wallen's One Night At A Time 2024 "Prince did the same thing," he said, seemingly referencing the iconic late musician's 2006 appearance on SNL. "I'm not saying Morgan Wallen is Prince, but we weren't surprised because Prince was notoriously kind of standoffish. It's just how he was. So we just thought like, 'Okay, now he's gone back into fantasyland.'" Dana Edelson / NBCUniversal via Getty Images "But Saturday I guess it was just different because it just felt so abrupt. And it was already such a small grouping on the stage anyway. So it was just like, oh wow, that was pretty visible. You know what I'm saying? It was a pretty visible thing." Kenan also admitted that he wasn't over the moon about Morgan's cryptic IG statement. "The 'God's country' of it all is strange because it's like, what are you trying to say?" he said. "You trying to say that we are not in God's country? We're not all in God's country? We're not all under God's umbrella? That's not necessarily my favorite."
