Porto fans set off firecrackers outside Roma's hotel
It was an eventful night for Claudio Ranieri and his men, less than 24 hours prior to the first leg of the Europa League playoffs with Porto. As reported by Il Romanista, a few hours before the match against Anselmi's Porto, a large group of opposing fans decided to disturb the sleep of the Giallorossi players. The Portuguese supporters were seen setting off several firecrackers (repeated explosions were reported throughout the night) near the hotel where Roma are staying in Portugal, all from 3 am onwards. The same 'strategy' was adopted by AZ fans before the match in Alkmaar, prior to Roma's 1-0 defeat.

Porto hires Argentine coach Martín Anselmi with Europa League and Club World Cup challenges ahead
PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Porto hired Martín Anselmi as coach on Monday with an immediate task of getting the two-time European champion into the knockout stage of the Europa League. Anselmi also will prepare Porto for the end-of-season Club World Cup in the United States, where it has been drawn in a group with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. Porto is in 25th place in the 36-team Europa League standings ahead of its game against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday. Porto needs at least a draw to climb into the top 24 spots and earn a place in the knockout playoffs round. The 39-year-old Argentine coach signed a contract through June 2027. He was presented at a news conference by Porto president André Villas-Boas and criticized officials at his previous club Cruz Azul in Mexico, saying they didn't honor an agreement to release him. Porto is in third place in the Portuguese league and had been struggling in the Europa League, which led to coach Vítor Bruno being fired last week. Porto qualified for the expanded 32-team Club World Cup as one of Europe's 12 entries because of consistent results in the past four editions of the Champions League. Porto's other group opponents are Palmeiras and Al Ahly. ___

Porto appoint Argentinian Anselmi as new coach
Jan 27 (Reuters) - Porto have appointed Martin Anselmi as their new coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract, the Portuguese club announced on Monday, a week after sacking Vitor Bruno following poor form in the Europa League and an exit from the League Cup semi-finals. The Primeira Liga side are third in the domestic league, six points behind leaders Sporting. Porto are also 25th in the Europa League with only two wins from seven matches, one place below the cut-off for qualification to the next round. Anselmi, 39, led Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle to a Copa Sudamericana title in 2022, and reached the Mexican Liga MX final with Cruz Azul last year. Porto is the Argentine's first assignment in Europe. "We have a lot of hope in you... we're sure you are the leader we needed," Porto president Andre Villas-Boas said at Anselmi's presentation. Porto play their final league phase game of the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday.
