Who Is Anshul Kamboj? CSK Star Who Once Bagged 10 Wickets In A Single Innings

Pacer Anshul Kamboj was handed his India debut for the 4th Test against England at Old Trafford in Manchester on Wednesday. Kamboj, 24, was added to the team squad ahead of the 4th Test, after both Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh were ruled out of the contest owing to injuries. Kamboj's addition raised a few eyebrows, despite his impressive outing for India A against the England Lions in two side games prior to the Test series. He took five wickets across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury while moving the ball appreciably and finding disconcerting bounce on occasions. Who is Anshul Kamboj? Anshul was born in Karnal, Haryana, India on 6 December 2000. He is a medium pacer who can bat a bit as well. He is the 318th Test cricketer to play for India. Notably, Anil Kumble was the last Indian cricketer to make his Test debut in Manchester. Coincidentally, both Kumble and Anshul have a 10-wicket haul in an innings in First Class cricket. He made his First Classh debut for Haryana in February 2022 versus Tripura in the Ranji Trophy. Last year, he became the third bowler to take all ten wickets in an innings in the Ranji Trophy, doing so for Haryana against Kerala. So far, he has played 24 FC matches, picking up 79 wickets. Anshul was also a standout performer in the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy, finishing among the top wicket-takers with 17 dismissals from 10 matches. His contributions helped Haryana lift their first title. Anshul made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2024, representing Mumbai Indians (MI), who bought him for Rs 20 lakh at the mega auction. However, he played just three games last season and was later revealed by the franchise. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had bought him for Rs 3.4 crore ahead of IPL 2025. He has played 11 IPL games so far, taking 10 wickets.

India vs England: The making of Anshul Kamboj, newest Test pacer

MANCHESTER: It's not unusual for parents to go to any extent to make their children pursue sports of their choice. Story of Anshul Kamboj, India's latest Test debutant, is no different. Father Udham Singh, a middle-class farmer from Fazilpur, Haryana, not only travelled around 80km everyday for almost four years to make sure his son, who was on the heavier side, gets proper cricket training but also shifted his family to Karnal a few years later for the same reason. Initially, Singh wanted Anshul to shed some weight and hence got him admitted to Rana Brother's Academy in Karnal when he was 11. But more than Anshul, it was a tiring task for his father. He had to wake up early in the morning to drop Anshul to the academy. "Anshul used to ride pillion with his father on a bike. They had to leave as early as 4AM to reach here by 5PM. Despite the difficult weather and long journey, the duo never got late," Satish Rana, Anshul's childhood coach, told this daily from Karnal. Australian legend pacer Glenn McGrath was Anshul's role model and he always wanted to bowl like him with precision. "McGrath was his role model from the beginning. He always wanted to bowl like him. This made him what he is today. One thing that impressed me the most when he first came to my academy was his dedication. He was always ready for challenges and never got distracted. He was focussed on what he has to do in his life," added the coach, who has been receiving hundreds of calls as soon as Anshul's debut was confirmed ahead of the fourth Test between India and England at the Old Trafford Ground in Manchester on Wednesday.

Who Is Anshul Kamboj? All You Need To Know About India's 318th Test Cricketer

Last Updated: Anshul Kamboj is making his international debut for India in Manchester. The 24-year-old fast bowler from Karnal has replaced Akash Deep in the playing XI. 24-year-old Anshul Kamboj, who was added to India's Test squad for the last two matches of the ongoing series against England, is making his debut for India on Wednesday (July 23) in Manchester. The right-arm medium pacer from Karnal has replaced Akash Deep in the playing XI for the Manchester Test. Anshul, who made headlines for taking all 10 wickets in an innings of a Ranji Trophy match for Haryana last year against Kerala in Rohtak, is the 318th cricketer to play Test cricket for India. He has 79 wickets to his name in 24 first-class matches played so far. He played his last competitive match for India A against England Lions in Northampton from June 6 to 9, 2025, and picked up two wickets in each innings, apart from scoring an unbeaten 51 runs with the bat in the second innings of the drawn match. In the IPL, Kamboj plays for Chennai Super Kings. He was signed for Rs 3.40 crore by the Chennai-based franchise in the mega auction last year. He made his CSK debut against the Kolkata Knight Riders in Chennai on April 11, 2025, and picked up one wicket. Overall, he finished the 2025 season with eight wickets in eight matches for the MS Dhoni-led side. Apart from CSK, Anshul played three matches for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024 and picked up two wickets. Kamboj's record in first-class cricket Anshul made his first-class debut for Haryana against Tripura at Palam A Stadium in Delhi on February 17, 2022. In that fixture, he scored 29 runs from 28 balls with the help of three sixes as a No. 9 batter and bowled 29 overs but failed to take any wicket. In his next Ranji Trophy match, which was played between Haryana and Punjab at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Kamboj dismissed Prabhsimran Singh for a golden duck on the first ball of the match and finished with figures of 2/116 in 30 overs in the first innings. He scored 25 and 24 runs with the bat but failed to prevent his side from going down by 10 wickets. In the last three years, Kamboj has played a total of 24 matches in first-class cricket and dismissed a total of 79 batters in addition to scoring 486 runs with the bat. His career-best score is 51 not out, which he made against England Lions in the last match, and he has two five-wicket hauls to his name. Manchester calling: Glenn McGrath-inspired Anshul Kamboj ready for Test bow

If you were Anshul Kamboj, chances are you weren't expected to find yourself as the name on everyone's lips ahead of the Manchester Test. After all, the pacer had been sent home after India A's tour of England as Harshit Rana was called up as injury cover for the first Test. But right after the Lord's Test loss and in the build-up to the match in Manchester, India found themselves in big Kumar Reddy was ruled out of the series and Arshdeep Singh suffered an injury to his bowling hand. To add salt to the wounds, Akash Deep, who has taken 11 wickets in two matches, was ruled out of the Manchester Test due to a groin issue. That meant Anshul came in as cover, and it now seems like he is being thrown into the deep end. Shubman Gill, during the press conference, more or less confirmed that the pacer is in line for a debut, and it will be a toss-up between him and Prasidh Krishna."We (Anshul Kamboj) have seen him enough. He knows exactly what we want. He is there because he knows that he can win us the match. Yes, it is not ideal to go back after every match and have a different combination. But yes, he is very close to making a debut. It will be a toss-up between him and Prasidh," Shubman said. If you look at Gill's words from the presser, the standout line is the pacer knowing his role and what is expected of was something R Ashwin also spoke about regarding the Haryana pacer on his YouTube channel, saying that he knows the plans well and even comparing his approach to that of Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah."The appreciable thing about Anshul is that he understands the plan. I've seen so many fast bowlers who, when asked about the plan, simply say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game," Ashwin said."But Anshul knows the plans and how to execute them in the middle. That's not a trait many fast bowlers possess. Zaheer Khan had it – he was amazing. In recent times, Jassi (Bumrah) is another who understands the plan and executes it to perfection. Anshul belongs to that variety. I'm not comparing skills, because that's a different thing."Knowing the England ConditionsIf you've followed Anshul's first-class career and journey through the cricketing ranks, one of his standout traits has been his consistent length and his ability to bowl long spells. You don't have to look further than his incredible 10-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy game against Kerala last year to see what he's capable than that, it's probably his recent experience playing in England that could become a key factor. The pacer picked up 5 wickets in 4 innings during the India A vs England Lions matches, but many felt he was the best bowler on display and deserved his coach Satish Rana said, the man is eager to make full use of the opportunity and show the world what he can do."Sir, I know the conditions. I've played there for India A.' He's desperate to get out there and perform for the team. He's still a kid, and he's getting valuable guidance from Gambhir sir and Bumrah. He asked them a lot of questions. Finally, he's where he always wanted to be," said Rana to is something Sanjay Manjrekar also agreed with, as he feels the Manchester conditions will suit the youngster."I think his bowling style will suit the conditions expected. At Manchester, they're saying, we have overcast conditions. The pitch is good for batting, but there's pace and bounce. So India would want to have somebody who is solid in his line and length. Prasidh Krishna has played before and has been left out because of his performances. So there's no point in bringing him back because he was left out on current form and performance. So worthwhile trying with somebody like Anshul Kamboj," said Calm and Smooth Operator With a Tinge of McGrath AggressionAs a pacer who focusses on line and length, there's no better role model than the legendary Glenn McGrath. Kamboj was able to learn a lot from the Aussie legend during his time at the NCA, doing what any aspiring bowler would do — study McGrath's spells and apply them to his own bowling."He is a big fan of Glenn McGrath. Bowls just like him. He watches McGrath's videos, especially his wicket-taking spells, and tries to apply that in his own bowling. Meeting McGrath at the NCA was a dream come true for him. It changed his life and completely transformed his approach to bowling," said Anshul's coach Read: ENG vs IND 4th Test, India predicted XI: Kamboj to debut, still no place for Kuldeep? Now, McGrath may have been nicknamed 'Pigeon', but he had a steely aggression behind those calm eyes — something Anshul seems to possess as like McGrath had aggression in his eyes, he does too. In fact, there's even more aggression in his bowling than in his eyes," said there's also a calmness to the young pacer — something instilled in him by none other than MS Dhoni."He has learned the art of staying calm from MS Dhoni, especially under pressure. He's naturally a calm-headed person. Dhoni advised him to remain composed in all situations and never lose his cool," said that's the perfect mix you need at the highest level. And it's exactly what the Indian team is hoping for from their newest pace prospect. So what should we expect from the man from Haryana?"Just watch what he does at Old Trafford. I don't want to overhype it. But bowing his head, listening to coaches and seniors, and applying that in his game — that's Anshul's strength. He's a good kid," said that could prove to be the difference if India win the Test in Manchester and level the series.- EndsMust Watch

Ravichandran Ashwin Picks India Pacer In Same Bracket As Zaheer Khan, Jasprit Bumrah. It's Not Mohammed Shami

Former India off-spinner R Ashwin believes that the uncapped Anshul Kamboj belongs to the rare breed of fast bowlers like Zaheer Khan and Jasprit Bumrah who are not only skillful but have an understanding of plans that goes beyond just trying to "express themselves and enjoy the game". Kamboj was drafted into the Indian squad for the fourth Test against England in Machester after injuries to all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, and the pace duo of Akash Deep, and Arshdeep Singh last week. "The appreciable thing about Anshul is that he understands the plan. I have seen so many fast bowlers if you ask them about the plan, they just say they want to express themselves and enjoy the game," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'. "But Anshul understands plans and also knows how to execute in the not a trait many fast bowlers possess. Zaheer Khan was one of them. He was amazing. "In recent times, Jassi (Bumrah) is one player who understands the plans and executes them to perfection. Anshul belongs to that variety. I'm not comparing skills because skills are a very different thing," he added. The 24-year-old impressed in the lead-up to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, performing consistently for India A against the England Lions. Across four innings at Northampton and Canterbury, he picked up five wickets, showcasing late movement and bounce. "He has a very good tappa (right length). I have seen that in the IPL. His wrist position is very good, and he delivers a very upright seam. He never leaves his tappa," he said. "With Bumrah and Siraj there, if you are bringing in Anshul Kamboj into the playing XI, I'm telling you, it's a serious bowling." "Serious bowling attack" ================ Ashwin feels Kamboj, who has been in "cracking form" will serve as the perfect foil to Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj in the fourth Test. "If you are going to bring Anshul Kamboj into the XI, I am telling you this is a serious bowling attack." He highlighted Kamboj's domestic exploits, which included a 10-wicket haul in an innings against Kerala last year in a Ranji Trophy match at Lahli. "People will say that Anshul will play his first Test. He hasn't played in England, but he was there in the A tour. He has been in cracking form in first-class cricket. He is averaging around 13. He took 10 wickets in an innings," he said.. Ashwin added that Kamboj has the ability to bowl long spells, which will help in England. "Anshul has a habit of bowling long spells. You need that in England. He will be a good foil for Bumrah and Siraj. Prasidh is an option, but I would go for Anshul. We were impressed with him. His wrist is really good," he said. However, Ashwin said that the Indian team management will have to calm Kamboj's nerve should he make his debut. "One thing the management will have to look after is calm Anshul's nerve," he said. India are currently trailing 1-2 in the five-match series with the fourth Test slated to begin in Manchester on Wednesday. PTI APA PM APA PM PM
