'Twisted Metal' Season 2: Stephanie Beatriz talks 'beautiful and crazy' Toronto areas used to film hit show
The second season dives into Calypso's deadly tournament and the competition to have one wish granted As Twisted Metal returns for Season 2 (on Paramount+ in Canada, Peacock in the U.S.), both Anthony Mackie's character John, and Stephanie Beatriz's character Quiet, evolve to an extremely satisfying place. But Beatriz in particular really makes her mark on the season, bringing even more of her sarcasm, wit and badass energy. At the core of the Season 2 story is Calypso's (Anthony Carrigan) racing tournament. As it's explained in the show, the winner will have one wish granted, which creates some intense competition. "Now we're hitting this thing that I think everybody's kind of been waiting for, which is the tournament. ... The whole game is the tournament," Beatriz told Yahoo Canada in Toronto. "That was the thing that I was most excited to see, how it was going to be played out. ... There's multiple things that happen to these characters as they're trying to get their wishes to come true." "Calypso, who's played by Anthony Carrigan, is another thing that I was really, really excited about for Season 2, because I just wanted so badly to see how he was going to play it, and what he does with it is so phenomenal. He's so funny and so weird, and so dastardly and so charismatic at the same time." For the show's second season production moved to the Greater Toronto Area, and as Beatriz described, there are some "crazy looking" places they were able to use for the show. "Toronto and the surrounding areas are just some of the most beautiful and crazy looking. I think we shot some stuff in this like decommissioned power plant called The Hearn, which all of the crew was like, 'Let's see if you can survive The Hearn.' And I did. I survived the Hearn," Beatriz said. John and Quiet: 'Are they the same people?' After they go their separate ways at the end of Season 1, Twisted Metal fans have been waiting to see the reunion between John and Quiet, and how a reconciliation could happen. Beatriz shared that because of the "strange world" John and Quiet operate in, it's like they're still going through their "adolescence." "They're still learning how to be human beings, and be people around other human beings. And something interesting that happens with the two of them is, essentially, they break up, ... and then they're back together. But are they the same people?" she said. "So all that stuff felt really real. There were elements of adolescence and young adulthood in it that I think many of us have lived, which is you go off to college, or you go off and do some crazy thing, you become more of yourself, and then you get back together with the person you used to make out with. And maybe they don't quite fit you anymore. Or many some of us have dated people who then you hit a wall with them and are like, ... this is it with you, right? Like, you're not going to go any further than this, and I actually want to go a lot further, so this might be goodbye. That's sort of the moment that Quiet and John are having in the beginning of Season 2." While there are a lot of brilliant new characters in Twisted Metal Season 2, Mayhem (Saylor Bell Curda) is an absolute highlight. She's a teenage apocalyptic survivor who establishes a big sister-little sister relationship with Quiet. There's a particularly great scene where Quiet is teaching Mayhem how to drive, and it has that the perfect Twisted Metal blend of humour and more emotionally impactful elements. "Quiet doesn't want her to get hurt. Quiet has a real soft spot for Mayhem, which might be to her detriment later in the season," Beatriz said. "She doesn't want her driving, she doesn't want her to get hurt. And so she's going to show her how tough it really is. She's not going to pull any punches, literally and figuratively." "It becomes this sort of challenge for Mayhem to make it through all of ... the rings of fire that [Quiet's] making her jump through to be able to drive, because you have to be able to trust somebody that's behind the driver's wheel in this show. You have to trust them with your life and that's what Quiet's trying to reiterate to Mayhem. This isn't a joke. This is life and death, even though she's literally making jokes as she does it, which is a fun balance to strike." 'You're not going to be everyone's cup of tea' But within all the entertaining havoc of Twisted Metal Beatriz feels incredibly dialled in for Season 2. She has such a unique style to her comedy throughout the season, which makes the whole experience feel particularly special. "There were probably many moments in my career where someone was like, 'Well what do you like?' ... And I think for a long time I was afraid to say, 'Well this is what I think.' ... And there was certainly a point where that stopped being true, where people who I respected, actors who I respected, artists who I respected, would turn to me and say, 'What do you think?' And it just made me feel much more grounded in my own taste and sensibilities," Beatriz shared. "You're not going to be for everybody. You're not going to be everyone's cup of tea, as Amaya Papaya said on Love Island, but when you are, when you hit, when somebody laughs at something that you did, it's like, wow we get each other." "What I think Twisted Metal is, it's for a certain audience, for a certain group of people, we get each other. It's not going to be for everybody, but for the people who it's for, it's really for them. ... Michael Jonathan Smith and I, that's our showrunner and our head writer, we just really get each other's sense of humour. And we walk into each other and we're so silly and goofy, and we're always trying to figure out what the better joke is, and try to make each other laugh. ... There's a ton of writers and people directing and people's sensibility, and other people's opinions and stuff, but ultimately you kind of have to trust that something that you think is funny is probably going to be funny to somebody else. And if it's not, that's OK."

We Smashed Around While Waiting for ‘Twisted Metal' Season 2
Here's a pro tip. Don't try to film while driving a Twisted Metal bumper car. Because, A, you might drop your phone, but also B, you will get called out and made fun of. That's what happened to me, in the most on-brand moment possible, Thursday at San Diego Comic-Con. A few blocks from the convention center, Peacock had an activation for the second season of its fun video game adaptation, returning July 31. The show is about cars that fight like warriors, so, short of actually letting you blow cars up, what better way to pay homage than with bumper cars? That's how a parking lot in the Gaslamp District of San Diego, CA, became a big bumper car attraction. A showcase for the classic carnival ride, with a few Twisted Metal tweaks, of course. Actors dressed as characters from the show roamed the space, urging you to excel in the competition. The always boisterous Sweet Tooth leads karaoke for the people in line, with a few lyrics changed to his liking. Several cars from the show itself were parked for photos, and, eventually, there was the main event. Bumper cars just like you remember when you were a kid, with the addition of a man in a black suit and long straight hair running around and telling you how bad you are at driving the whole time. It's the character Calypso, played by Anthony Carrigan on the show, and while Carrigan wasn't watching bumper cars all day, his counterpart did an excellent job of emceeing the carnage, all while rock songs were played by the nearby DJ. In the end, was it basically just bumper cars with 'Twisted Metal' written on the hood? Yes, it was. But the design of them, the space, the roaming characters, and more really set the tone for a fun experience for anyone killing a few hours at Comic-Con. Here are a few images. Twisted Metal season 2 returns July 31 on Peacock. The activation is open July 25-26, from noon to 6 p.m., at The Lot @ 1st and J, 450 2nd Ave, San Diego, CA. Want more io9 news? After Suffering Hair Loss From Alopecia, Anthony Carrigan Recalled Being Told To "Get Out" Of Hollywood Because He Was "Not Attractive Anymore"
This week, Anthony Carrigan was interviewed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he discussed his experience living with alopecia. Anthony has had alopecia areata, a disorder that causes hair loss, since he was 3. Related: "You've been very open about your experience with alopecia, which causes sort of the radical hair loss," Stephen began. "What was it like starting out in an industry that puts such a premium on standard normative looks?" Anthony, 42, admitted, "It was obviously quite a journey because when — I had it since I was a kid, and I would cover it up because it was just spots at the time. So it started as something that I would cover up. I had a lot of shame over. I didn't really like anyone knowing I had alopecia." Related: Becoming an actor and living under the constant glare of Hollywood only amplified his insecurities. Anthony said, "Getting into the industry — obviously I chose the right industry to get into — but eventually, I got to the place where after being told I was never gonna act again..." "Really?" Stephen interjected. "They said you should get out?" "Oh, fully get out," Anthony confessed. "Yeah, 'You're never gonna act again. You're not attractive anymore. You should stop.' And this was when my hair was really going." Related: "So I found something within myself, this kind of self-acceptance that I never had as a kid, and now, that's my superpower," Anthony said, drawing cheers and applause from the audience. His comments also prompted reactions online, with many sharing love and support for the actor. "Glad he ignored all that negativity and kept going cause he's a really incredible actor," one Reddit user said, while others chimed in to share their favorite TV and movie projects. One person declared, "Noho Hank is one of TV's greatest characters," while another fan wrote, "I don't swing that way but I always thought he was an attractive dude, he's got some aura. Loved him in Barry." They also praised his "top tier" performance as Victor Zsasz in Gotham and his portrayal as Metamorpho in the new Superman film. Related: "He played the hell out of Zsasz-y in Gotham," someone said. "I was terrified of him. Then [I] realized his range when he was such a sweetheart as metamorpho…" And of course, people were very angry and hurt to hear about all of the mean comments that Anthony had received for his hair loss. "Haters are funny," one comment read. "they always project their hate, but if you talk to them long enough, they only hate themselves." Another said, "Fuck you whoever told him he would never act again," as someone else said they "feel the need to hug him right now 🥺" You can see the interview here and catch Anthony in Superman now in theaters. James Gunn Spills New Details on Ultraman, Metamorpho, and the Engineer in SUPERMAN — GeekTyrant
James Gunn's Superman is shaping up to be a character-packed, morally complex, and slightly chaotic reintroduction to the Man of Steel's world. While Lex Luthor remains the film's central antagonist, Gunn recently shared new details on how characters like Ultraman, Metamorpho, the Engineer, and even Eve Teschmacher fit into the mix. Let's start with Ultraman. Fans have been scratching their heads over this one. Some have speculated he's a clone of Superman, others guessed a reimagined Parasite or even a proto-Bizarro. When Entertainment Weekly asked if Ultraman is Lex's own twisted version of Superman, Gunn said: 'I think that's close. Ultraman is sort of Lex's thug, and is pretty powerful.' He expanded on the moral gray areas the movie explores: 'There are some characters that are really almost saintly, like Superman. There are some characters who are almost pretty terrible, like Lex Luthor. But I don't think Lex is all bad, and I don't think Superman is all good. 'All those people in between, the Guy Gardners and the Jimmy Olsens of the world, are even more complex in their moralities and what they think is okay.' It sounds like this complexity will extend to Metamorpho, played by Anthony Carrigan. In the film, Rex Mason can transmute his body into any natural element, including Kryptonite. That's a power Lex Luthor clearly wants to exploit, even if it means bending Metamorpho's will. Carrigan described the struggle his character faces: 'You're in a situation where it's having to hurt someone, having to be an agent of the bad guy. And at the same time, there's this struggle to want to be good. 'What the film does brilliantly is it puts you in this situation of, 'Oh! He has no choice.' He has to be doing this, and you see how painful it is.' Baby Joey might have something to do with that, a mysterious figure yet to be revealed, may be at the heart of how Lex manipulates Metamorpho. As Gunn bluntly put it: 'Lex is connected to everything. There's nothing bad happening in Metropolis during this movie that doesn't have some connection to Lex Luthor.' Then there's Angela Spica, a.k.a. The Engineer, played by María Gabriela de Faría. A character known for her nanotech-enhanced body, Angela has a strangely intimate dynamic with Lex. While it's not overtly romantic in the movie, de Faría shared her thoughts on what's simmering under the surface: 'I imagined that Lex and Angie had this work relationship where they respect each other so much. Angela highly believes in Lex's idea of making the world a better place. She's practically given her life to Lex for this greater good. 'But at the same time, I feel like there's an element of an underlying relationship going on between the two of them. It's not in the movie… I feel like these guys f***!' Enter Eve Teschmacher, Lex's actual girlfriend, played by Sara Sampaio. But don't expect a supervillain as Teschmacher is more of a selfie-snapping influencer than a mastermind. Sampaio said: 'She's just very for herself and her content. She's sometimes out of notion with what's happening or what's appropriate, but she does have a heart. At the end of the day, everything is just so exciting for her. She's just in a whole different world.' Gunn seems to be building a Superman world where even the side characters have internal conflict, rich dynamics, and layered motivations. Metamorpho may eventually lean toward heroism. The Engineer's fate remains uncertain, especially with The Authority movie now off the immediate DC slate. As for Ultraman… Whether he sticks around will likely depend on who's under that mask. Superman flies into theaters July 11, 2025.
