In two days, 24 persons held for drug peddling

In two days, the Greater Chennai City Police has arrested 24 persons for possessing drugs in three different places- Pattinapakkam, Maduravoyal and MGR Nagar- and seized the contraband from them. The Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit(ANIU) has been sharing intelligence inputs on drug peddlers and local police have been arresting and seizing the drugs consistently across the city. In pursuance of operations, Pattinapakkam Police mounted surveillance near a hotel and conducted a search at a room in the hotel located in MRC Nagar on Sunday. Police seized 5g of ganja, 48mg of OG ganja and 11 mobile phones from 10 persons. Police arrested Jagadeeshwar, 34, of Choolai, Santhosh, 27, of Kolathur and eight others. Police investigation revealed that Jagadeeshwar had a love marriage recently and the contraband was used at the party he hosted for his friends. On Saturday, Maduravoyal police arrested 10 suspects including Vasanth, 23 of Maduravoyal, Karthik, 27, of Karanodai and eight others near Kamatchi Nagar. 0.81g of LSD stamps, 5.25g of MDMA tablets, 53g of OG ganja, 350g of ganja, ₹50,000 in cash, and a bike were seized from them. MGR Nagar police arrested four more suspects including Sankara Narayanan, 27, of MGR Nagar and three others. The police seized 3g of methamphetamine and 28g of ganja paste from them.

The Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner A. Arun on Tuesday rewarded the Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit(ANIU) for busting a drug cartel which had a nexus with peddlers operating from Manipur and arresting seven peddlers, besides seizing huge quantity of methamphetamine On June 4, the special team of ANIU led by its Assistant Commissioner of Police, Manoj Kumar arrested six peddlers including Mohammed Ali, 25 of Thiruvottriyur and Mina, 46, native of Manipur near IOC Railway Yard and seized Rs 35 lakh, 700 gram methamphetamine, one hand gun, 15 bullets and mobile phones from them. One more suspect was arrested on the next day. Joint Commissioner of Police, G. Dharmarajan and Deputy Commissioner of Police, R. Sakthivel were present on the occasion.

A Nigerian woman who was part of a cocaine peddling network in Chennai city was arrested by Choolaimedu Police. The Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit (ANIU) and Greater Chennai Police have been making a series of arrests and seizure of drugs for the last 10 months and Tamil actors Srikanth and Krishna were also arrested this week. Following a tip-off on drug trafficking, the Choolaimedu Police arrested Fayas Ahamed (31) of Royapettah and S. Chandrasekar (25) of Koyambedu on January 21. Based on their confessions, 14 persons who were part of the cartel were nabbed subsequently. Further investigation led to the arrest of total 24 persons including two Nigerian nationals, one from Bengaluru and another from Mumbai, besides the suspects in Chennai. After analysing call records and bank transactions, police found a woman was also part of the network. On Thursday (June 26, 2025), a special team was sent to Bengaluru that arrested the suspect who has been identified as Sarah Kumama alias Happiness alias Blessings (41), a Nigerian national. She was brought to Chennai and remanded to judicial custody. Police seized two mobile phones from her.

Key men of drug cartel nabbed in Delhi

The Greater Chennai City Police has arrested two main suspects from their hideouts in Delhi who were part of a drug cartel operating in the city. Cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine were seized by the police from them and further investigation is on. Originally, the Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit (ANIU) and Anna Salai police caught a gang of five youth on March 9 on Whites Road and Smith Road junction. Methamphetamine, ganja, MDMA tablets and other narcotic drugs were seized from them. They were found peddling drugs along with a few others. After conducting an enquiry and based on information given by them, the police traced five more suspects, including four foreign nationals from African countries, and arrested them in the first week of April. The contraband and a weighing machine were seized from them. The police went deep into the network and traced two men who were supplying the drug to the network from Delhi. A special team of police personnel traced a suspect, Abou, 39, from Ivory Coast, a West African nation. He was staying at Vikas Vihar, Nilothi Extension, New Delhi West. He was nabbed by police on Sunday at his hide-out along with Rahul, a 19-year-old youth who was helping him. Fifteen grams of cocaine, seven grams of heroin, three grams of methamphetamine and ₹50,000 were seized from them. The police obtained a transit warrant after producing them in a court. They were brought to Chennai and remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a court in Egmore Court complex.

Chennai: Anti-Narcotic Intelligence Unit (ANIU) of the city police arrested 2,774 people, including college students, previous offenders, and junior artistes, for narcotics peddling in 1,004 cases in the past eight months. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The unit, headed by an assistant commissioner of police (ACP), has two inspectors, five sub-inspectors, and 30 police personnel. It was formed to curb synthetic drug networks in the city. The team found 71 active networks involved in the smuggling and peddling of methamphetamine , leading to the arrest of 464 people, police said. Tracking the network, police found them operating from Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, selling meth through their agents in the city. Two weeks ago, eight foreign nationals — seven Nigerians and one Sudanese national—were arrested in two cases recently registered in Anna Salai and Triplicane police limits. Twenty Nigerians, a Cameroon national, and a Sudan national were arrested for peddling meth, police said. Other major busts by the ANIU include the seizure of 17 crore worth of meth in Dec 2024, in which 12 people were arrested.
