Losing either of these two senses could be deadly, studies show
Losing these two senses could indicate potentially fatal health conditions, new research shows. Hearing loss has been linked to a higher chance of heart failure while people with a poor sense of smell are more likely to die of neurodegenerative, respiratory and cardiovascular complications, according to two new studies. Scientists from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that out of 2,500 participants, those who flunked a 16-item 'odor identification test,' which included scents like lemon, garlic and coffee, had a nearly 70% higher risk of mortality than those who aced it. Advertisement 3 A study published in JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery found that deficits in the sense of smell are associated with increased mortality in older adults. AntonioDiaz – The study, which was published in JAMA Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery last month, looked at the most common causes of death associated with having a poor sense of smell and found that dementia was the biggest risk factor. Experts say regular screenings, similar to hearing and vision assessments, could help, and the research is a reminder that olfaction, the ability to smell that research indicates also impacts taste and memory, is an important marker of overall health. Advertisement 'Your sense of smell is not only your smell and taste,' the study's senior author, Ingrid Ekström, told JAMA. 'It's your memory and your perception and knowing about your environment around you.' 3 New research suggests a connection between hearing loss and an increased risk of heart failure. lovelyday12 – 3 Psychological stress caused by hearing loss plays a 'notable' role in developing heart problems, the study found. Rene La/ – Meanwhile, people with slight and significant hearing problems were 15% and 28% more likely, respectively, to develop heart failure than those with adequate hearing, according to an observational study of 164,000 UK participants published in the medical journal Heart last month. Advertisement Those using hearing aids had a 26% heightened risk. Though vascular issues are likely to blame, researchers found that the psychological stress that comes with losing the ability to hear can exacerbate heart disease. The scientists concluded: 'These findings suggest that hearing health and psychological well-being should be considered in cardiovascular risk assessment and prevention strategies.'

What's the ‘ideal' number of sexual partners? Study reveals the sweet spot — and it's not what you think
A new study revealed the socially acceptable number of sexual partners for each gender — and it might surprise you. According to the study, featured in 'Social Psychological and Personality Science,' the magic number for guys is 4-5 lifetime partners — with 2-3 of them being casual hookups. The study also revealed that a first roll in the hay for men often happens between the ages of 18 and 20. Advertisement For women, the magic number shrinks to 2-3 partners — with only 1-2 casual flings. Their first romp often happens between 16 and 18, originally reported by Vice. The reason why these numbers are described as 'ideal' is what you'd probably expect — there is less judgment from society if someone — man or woman — has a low body count. The higher the number — the more judgy Karens. These numbers discovered by the study are fairly low considering the average American has slept with 14 people according to a poll conducted by Talker Research for LELO. Advertisement 'There are both similarities and differences in the societal evaluation of male and female sexuality,' the researchers of the ideal body count numbers wrote. 'However, contrary to common assumptions, moderate rather than extremely low or extremely high levels of sexual activity are most valued for both genders.' 3 According to the study, featured in 'Social Psychological and Personality Science,' the magic number for guys is 4-5 lifetime partners — with 2-3 of them being casual hookups — and a first roll in the hay often happens between ages 18 and 20. Tamani Chithambo/ – For the study, researchers surveyed over 340 participants in Germany to determine how society views a 25-year-old's sexual activity, including the number of partners, frequency of sex and even masturbation habits. Advertisement It also pointed out how men often get dinged for not racking up enough notches on the bedpost, keeping the pressure to perform alive and well. 3 For men, the 'ideal' is 4-5 partners, with 2-3 casual, and a first experience between 18-20. For women, it's 2-3 partners, 1-2 casual, and a first time between 16-18. AntonioDiaz – Meanwhile, ladies still catch flak for having 'too many' partners, proving those tired double standards are far from dead. As discovered in another survey conducted last fall, one in four Americans in relationships keep their body count a steamy secret. Advertisement 3 A survey from last fall found that one in four Americans in relationships is keeping their 'body count' a secret from their partner. Dmitriy Kapitonenko – The survey of 2,000 sexually active adults found that 26% haven't come clean about their number of past partners, with 16% admitting they lowballed the figure when asked. Why the fibbing? 60% said their partner simply never asked, while one in nine suspects their significant other might be lying about their own tally. And while 83% of singles claim they'd spill the beans, only 62% want to hear their partner's truth.

Viral Korean diet promises to burn fat but maintain muscle in 4 weeks — here's how it works
If you're struggling to lose weight, you may need to switch gears. A Korean doctor has devised a four-week metabolic reset program that's gone viral based on claims it causes rapid weight loss. The Switch-On Diet focuses on intermittent fasting, protein-heavy meals and gut optimization to promote fat burning while preserving muscle mass. 'By the end of Week 1, I noticed less bloating and better digestion,' a gut health blogger recently shared. 'By Week 4, I was down [4.5 pounds] of body fat, felt more energized and experienced surprising mental clarity.' How the diet works 4 Dr. Park Yong-Woo (pictured here) developed the Switch-On Diet through his work researching obesity. YouTube/Dr. Park Yong-Woo The Switch-On Diet is the brainchild of Dr. Park Yong-Woo. The obesity researcher wrote a book about it over seven years ago. Each of the four weeks represents a different phase of the program. Protein is emphasized throughout because it's essential for muscle growth and repair. Caffeine, alcohol, processed foods and sugar should be avoided, while carbs are OK in moderation. Restricting carbs allows the body to enter a state of ketosis, potentially reducing gut inflammation. Fiber in the veggies adds bulk to stool, making it easier to go No. 2, while some research suggests intermittent fasting may boost energy levels. Week 1 4 Protein shakes provide the foundation for the Switch-On Diet. WavebreakmediaMicro – This week's goal, divided into two parts, is to detox and reset the gut. Participants should drink protein shakes four times daily for the first three days, take probiotics first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and walk at least an hour a day. Plain, unsweetened yogurt, tofu and veggies such as cabbage, cucumbers and broccoli are allowed if hunger persists. This plan continues for the subsequent four days — except a low-carb, high-protein lunch featuring fish, chicken, tofu, boiled pork, low-fat beef or eggs is added to the routine. Flour, dairy and coffee aren't permitted. Week 2 4 Intermittent fasting begins with one 24-hour period in Week 2 and ramps up in the final two weeks. PheelingsMedia – Intermittent fasting, which involves limiting eating to a certain time window, begins this week. Fast for one 24-hour period, preferably from early dinner to the next day's afternoon snack, so the fast can be broken with a high-protein dinner. The daily lineup is two protein shakes, a low-carb lunch like rice, vegetables and a protein and a no-carb dinner like vegetables and a protein. A handful of nuts, white rice, legumes and one morning cup of black coffee get the thumbs up. Muscle recovery is the aim — avoid high-intensity exercise on fast days. Weeks 3 and 4 4 Bananas are OK if they are eaten after exercise. AntonioDiaz – The last two weeks are about enhancing fat burning by extending fasting periods and adding flexibility to the low-carb meals. Week 3 calls for two non-consecutive 24-hour fasting periods, while Week 4 requires three. Continue consuming two shakes a day and two low-carb meals. Pumpkins, cherry tomatoes, chestnuts and berries can be eaten — save sweet potatoes and bananas for post-exercise. After finishing the program, maintain the results with a 24-hour fast and a 14-hour fast once a week. Before starting the Switch-On Diet A doctor should be consulted before beginning any diet plan. Because the Switch-On Diet limits caffeine intake, participants may notice withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, fatigue and irritability. Eating the same foods can also get repetitive. A TikTok user said last month that she quit the program after five days because while she shed pounds, she got sick of the protein shakes. And the pros and cons of intermittent fasting are still being ironed out. For example, a 2024 study found that restricting eating to less than eight hours a day increases the odds of death from cardiovascular disease compared to eating in a 12- to 16-hour window.
