Here's where you'll find these retro arcade classics, along with some details about which old favorites you can expect to discover in the newly updated Xbox library. Xbox has teamed up with Antstream Arcade to add some vintage gaming greats to the Xbox Game Pass library. Thanks to the collaboration, those who sign up for Xbox Game Pass will now have access to more than 50 beloved titles from years gone by. Xbox Just Added 50+ Classic Activision Games To Game Pass
Surprise! If you are a Game Pass subscriber, you now have access to dozens and dozens of retro video games. And Xbox and Activision plan to add even more classic games in the future. On May 21, Xbox announced that over 50 retro Activision games were now available via a new app called Retro Classics. The new app is available only via Xbox Game Pass for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and streaming. It is available to all Game Pass subscribers, including Game Pass Core members (unless you live in Japan). Let's ignore that it should obviously have been called Xbox Retro Arcade, and instead focus on the new app. According to Xbox, Retro Classics is powered by Antstream Arcade's streaming game tech, which is a mostly solid way to instantly play tons of old games across many different platforms. The new app supports challenges, multiplayer, multiple saves, weekly tournaments, user profiles, and leaderboards. And yes, Retro Classics has achievements. Finally, you can get a nifty Xbox achievement for playing River Raid. 'This initiative is a step in our commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility, allowing players to experience many timeless games on modern devices,' said Xbox in a post on the company's website. So what games are currently available on the Retro /Arcade/ Classics app? Here's some I spotted and tested: Kaboom!, Pitfall, Pitfall 2, River Raid, Grand Prix, Commando, Barnstorming, Fishing Derby, and Mech Warrior 2. Oh and Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist is available, too. That's a game that a young Geoff Keighley helped test back in the day, long before he had a whole game award show. According to Xbox, this is just the start. It plans on adding more Acitivison and Blizzard games to the app in the future. While I'm not a huge fan of streaming old games like this, and would prefer actual downloads and offline play, this is still better than nothing. It's nice to see Xbox finally digging into Activision's deep library of classic games and doing something with them after buying the publisher back in 2023. If Microsoft wants to own the entire game industry, the least it can do is make it easier to legally play the old stuff it gobbled up in the process. . Xbox Game Pass Makes Classic Games From the '80s and '90s Available Now
Xbox Game Pass offers a catalog of modern games across consoles, PC and other devices. On Wednesday, Xbox announced a partnership with retro games library Antstream Arcade and launched Retro Classics, a collection of more than 50 classic Activision games from the '80s and '90s, that all subscribers can play now. Available games include Commando, Mech Warrior 2: 31st Century Combat and Pitfall! "This initiative honors our commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility, allowing players to experience many timeless games on modern devices," Xbox posted online. Xbox is also bringing a new feature to many of the games in the Retro Classics collection: saving. Many games included in the collection didn't have a save function at the time of their release, meaning you had to restart your progress each time you started the game. Now, you can save and reload these games so you don't have to fight your way back to a location every time. Microsoft According to Xbox, Game Pass subscribers need to search for Retro Classics on their console, PC or Game Pass app and download the feature to their device. Microsoft bought Activision Blizzard in 2023, and the company has been adding games from the developer behemoth to Game Pass ever since. The Diablo and Call of Duty franchises are represented on the service, and Xbox added a collection of classic games from Blizzard in March, called Blizzard Arcade Collection. Those games include Lost Vikings and RPM racing. Xbox said Wednesday that it plans to continue to add classic games from Activision and Blizzard to the Retro Classics collection. Microsoft offers four tiers to Xbox Game Pass: Core, Standard, PC Game Pass and Ultimate. These tiers range in price from $10 to $20 a month, and each tier offers subscribers perks like deals on non-Game Pass games and online multiplayer. Retro Classics is available on all four Game Pass tiers in the US, but only Game Pass Standard, PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate in Japan.
