Met him after 26 years: Mother of ‘Tiger of Drass' on seeing his bust at Kargil War Memorial
Meena Nayyar set out to write a book about her son to immortalise his life story. Captain Nayyar, who was awarded Mahavir Chakra for his valiant efforts and supreme sacrifice in the process, has not been as well known as other war heroes like Captain Vikram Batra and Captain Saurabh Kalia. Drass (Kargil), Jul 26 (PTI) Meena Nayyar, the mother of Kargil war hero Captain Anuj Nayyar, was all tears and said she felt like she was meeting her son for the first time in more than 26 years when she saw her son's bust at the War Memorial here. 'The army gives tremendous respect to its soldiers. We saw that yesterday. When I saw Anuj's statue, I thought I was meeting him for the first time. I had not allowed anyone to see the body. The way he had left happily, I wanted the same memory to remain. The honour I witnessed here, I feel the Army never forgets its martyrs,' Meena told PTI. The busts eight Kargil Wasr heroes were installed along the Vijaypath in 2022. Meena Nayyar was among those next of kin who had not been to the Kargil Vijay Diwas for several years. The army started an outreach to ensure that such family members of the war heroes attend the function this year. On the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas commemoration function, Meena Nayyar, who reached Drass from Delhi, presented the copy of her book to Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday. The book — 'Tiger of Drass' — encapsulates the biography of Captain Nayyar. Meena Nayyar admitted that the idea of the book on her son would have been difficult to be execute if not for the help from Himmat Singh Shekhawat, who later on went to become the co-author of the effort. 'When Anuj was martyred, he was given the title of 'Tiger of Drass' and I always wanted to write a book with the same title,' the mother said. She said Shekhawat's Rashtriya Riders, a group who visit families of Kargil Martyrs to pay tributes to them, in one such visit to her residence felt Captain Nayyar's sacrifice had not been given the recognition it deserves 'There is a Rashtriya Riders group who came to our home, about 12-14 people. They saw everything about Anuj and told me whether a book can be written on Anuj as he has perhaps got less fame than he deserved,' she said. She said this was the beginning of the book on the life of Captain Nayyar. 'We wrote the book very well, but the chapter on war was a huge challenge for us because we had not witnessed which top he fought on and how. So, a five member team including Karan and Himmat came here for four days and lived in 17 JAT. They tried to reach 222 point and they tried to find out the conditions of Anuj's war, the way he had three platoons under his command,' she said. Recalling the events prior to Captain Nayyar's martyrdom, the mother said her son was given command of three platoons by General Bawa after Major Ritesh retired hurt due to injuries. 'Gen Bawa gave the command of three platoons to Anuj saying now you have to take care of all this. Anuj told him 'Sir I will do it'. It boosted his morale,' she said. Meena Nayyar said in the third week of June, her son was made the captain and the stars of the rank pinned inside a tent here. 'Gen Bawa told him Anuj every star means a responsibility. Perhaps there was thought inside him that since he has become a Captain, it was his responsibility to do the war even if anything happens,' she added. Agra: A 17-year-old boy, his girlfriend, and three of his other friends have been arrested in Muzaffarnagar district for allegedly murdering a 22-year-old man who blackmailed the girl using private photos and her contact details, which he had stolen from the boy's phone, police said on Thursday. Based on a complaint by Anuj's brother, Sonu Kashyap, an FIR was registered. Mayor Sushma Kharkwal expressed her condolences and LMC officials, including additional municipal commissioners Lalit Kumar and Arun Kumar Gupta, visited the family. The LMC claimed the accident occurred as Anuj lost control while riding at high speed.

Tour operator made to pay for not checking passport validity
Surat: The district consumer disputes redressal commission (CDRC) here ordered a travel agent to pay Rs 1.37 lakh as compensation to a client who was not allowed to board a flight to Indonesia owing to passport validity issues. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Regulations mandate that passports are valid for at least six months to travel to Indonesia. The travel agent failed to verify this, resulting in a Surat tourist being refused boarding at Delhi airport. The court also ordered payment of compensation for the harassment caused. Jha contacted Surat-based TITO Tours two years ago for a Bali package. She booked a package costing Rs 2.22 lakh for herself, her husband and their son Anuj. Jha furnished the passports of all three to TITO Tours for the ticket booking and other procedures. The tour operator then bought tickets for them from Surat to Bali via Delhi and Kuala Lumpur. In April 2023, the family arrived in Delhi from Surat to catch the flight to Bali. Jha's son was denied boarding because his passport had less than six months' validity remaining, in breach of Indonesian laws. Anuj returned to Surat. The complainant then sought a refund from the tour operator, who refused it, saying it was her responsibility to check the passport validity. Jha then approached the Surat consumer forum against TITO Tours. The forum observed: "As the tour operator is associated with foreign tours, he knows the rules regarding passport validity. It is the operator's duty to inform the customer of these rules. In this case, the customer had already provided the operator with the passports for booking. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As the tour operator is an expert in his business, it is his duty to check passport validity, not the customer's. This is a clear deficiency in service that led to losses for the consumer. Therefore, the tour operator is liable to pay Rs 1.37 lakh as compensation to the complainant." The Surat consumer court ordered that the compensation be paid along with 8% interest from May 18, 2023, Rs 3,000 for the harassment caused and Rs 2,000 for legal costs.

Life & The Afterlife
I am constantly reminding myself that these are random occurrences. But, the frequency and regularity with which these grotesque deaths are happening is making me feel that some other sinister events are in play. It is like the earth is swallowing up all our young people! And I am talking about the young people who are hale and hearty, take care of their health, non-smokers, and I could go on and on. They are going to sleep one night and not waking up the next morning! As Indians we are very accepting about the death and its repercussions on the unfortunate families left behind. We have our culture, prayers, and a strong belief in the Almighty and a huge support system in the form of family, friends and neighbours. There are no words or deeds one can offer or do to a devastated mother or a young wife or husband that is left behind. Sometimes, even as a words-smith, I am bereft of anything to say. Chef Anuj Sood was a bright young star at the ITC Gardenia who helped open up their specialty restaurant Cajsa (meaning pure). I remember going there for an intimate pre-opening and meeting up with the very talented Anuj . His excitement was infectious! On my subsequent visits I would always see him hard at work behind the counters, encouraging the staff with a pat or a kind word. A young father who's eyes would light up when he spoke of his daughter and wife in Australia. To him cooking was an art form and he literally conjured up magic with his gastronomy skills winning the admiration of his peers and seniors in the industry. An avid traveller, a passionate singer and dancer, Anuj was the life of every get-together. Yet, one morning he never woke up. He just slipped away after wishing his still shell-shocked mother goodnight. R.I.P. Anuj. I never imagined that after that warm hug we shared when I congratulated you on your superb dinner barely three months ago would be the last. Gone much too soon…
