Geraldton Buccaneers split road trip with loss against the Flames and win against the Hawks
The Geraldton Buccaneers split their road trip over the weekend, with a loss at the hands of the Rockingham Flames and a win against Perry Lakes Hawks as they hold down sixth position on the NBL1 West ladder. The opening game of the road trip against Rockingham on Saturday night was always going to be a tough contest, touted as one of the hardest road trips to make in the competition. Buccs' big man Liam Hunt performed impressively on the night, leading the way offensively with 24 points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Josh Keyes also shone bright for the Buccs in a hard contest with 14 points, nine rebounds and one assist. The Buccs went 74 per cent from the line, trumping Rockingham's 44 per cent, but that made little difference as the Flames crashed the boards, outclassing the Buccs on that front, leading to more scoring opportunities from the field. The final score was 99-85 to the Flames in a tough start to the road trip for the Buccs. The Buccs then travelled to Perry Lakes to face-off against the Hawks on Sunday, with the opportunity of road-trip redemption up for grabs. Perry Lakes were up and about as they came off a win against the South West Slammers but the Buccs were determined to run over the top of them. Johny Narkle was a star on the court with a stand-out performance of 31 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block, earning the Anzac Medal for his efforts. Nik DeSantis lent a helping hand to Narkle with 20 points, four rebounds and five assists. New US import Akeem Springs also chalked up impressive numbers finishing his night with 15 points. Coming off the bench and providing a playmaking masterclass was new recruit Verle Williams, who racked up 11 points, three rebounds and six assists. The Buccs ended up convincing winners over Perry Lakes, 104-74. They will now gear up for their second home game of the year at Activewest Stadium on Saturday, May 3 at 7pm against 10th placed Eastern Suns.

AFL world all says same thing after Abbey Holmes and Nathan Buckley decision
AFL fans are singing the praises of the judging panel - headed by Abbey Holmes and Nathan Buckley - who voted Steele Sidebottom as best on ground in Collingwood's win over Essendon on Friday. Collingwood had numerous contenders for the Anzac Day Medal, with starring performances from Nick Daicos (32 disposals, 11 clearances) and brother Josh (36 possessions), as well as Jaime Elliott (five goals) and Scott Pendlebury (31 possessions). But Sidebottom was the overwhelming favourite after 36 possessions and 15 clearances - 13 of which came before three-quarter-time. Sidebottom was the unanimous winner of his second Anzac Medal with 12 votes - nine years after winning his first in 2016. The judging panel of Holmes, Buckley, Chris Johnson and Gavin Wanganeen all awarded Sidebottom three votes, while Elliott was second with seven votes and Josh Daicos third on five. Holmes, Johnson and Wanganeen all awarded two votes to Elliott and one to Daicos, while Buckley gave Daicos two and Elliott one. There were a few pundits who thought Nick Daicos should have received some votes, but the overall majority felt the judging panel got it exactly right. It was somewhat of a rarity in modern times for fans to credit the judging panel after the voting of a major award. There always seems to be controversy or division when a big medal or award is decided, and Eddie McGuire suggested in 2023 that changes might need to be made. McGuire suggested a "panel of elders" should decide awards like the Brownlow, Norm Smith and Anzac medals. "I think we've got enough really great former players who get lost to the game," he said. "Let's get a few of the others that we haven't seen in a while. People who have gone off and done other businesses and things. Get them there, have five or six of them, sit them down, furnish them with the information they need so they're not just sitting there as someone goes past them with drinks, and do it properly so you get it right." The full votes for the 2025 ANZAC Day Medal. Steele Sidebottom won the award with twelve votes.@6NewsAU — Lachlan Sherriff (@LachlanSherriff) April 25, 2025 Deserved!! ❤️ — Wesley Edwards (@Fearinator) April 25, 2025 Steele Sidebottom was incredible today , absolutely deserved the ANZAC day medal . — Chris (@Chris2Far86) April 25, 2025 Good on you Steele, incredible effort today legend. You played a great game, sensational. Keep it up 🖤🤍😍💪 — JAKE FLAGPIES23 🏆🖤🤍 (@IncrediblyBozza) April 25, 2025 Sidey, My Boy, I will put my hand up and state that, along with Pendles and Howey, I thought you might have retired after the 2023 Flag. You born-again inside midfielder, you have proved me so wrong and I am very happy that you did. Love your work, Steelo! — John Morris🇦🇺 (@JohnMorris1963) April 25, 2025 Well deserved Steele Sidebottom #AFLPiesDons — Pistol (@thepistol17) April 25, 2025 All eyes were on Nick Daicos on Friday as he became Collingwood's youngest captain in 57 years as a replacement for the injured Darcy Moore. But it was Collingwood's old guard - led by Sidebottom - who delivered a timely reminder of their class. The 34-year-old was devastating around the stoppages, notching 22 contested possessions and 598 metres gained. "I said to him in the third quarter, 'God, Steele, you're going well today," said coach Craig McRae after the 16.11 (107) to 10.6 (66) win. "He had about 13 clearances at that stage. He's had a terrific season to date. He's banking high performance right now, training really well, put a lot of time into his fundamentals and he's playing really good footy right now." Those clean players in the wet really stand out. He's amazing." with AAP

Ageless warrior Steele Sidebottom trumps Daicos brothers for Anzac Medal in Collingwood's big win
Collingwood have marched to their sixth consecutive victory with a hard-fought 41-point victory over Essendon in the traditional Anzac Day blockbuster at the MCG. The Pies jumped the Bombers early before a four-goal blitz in the second term had the Dons back in the hunt by half-time. Essendon hit the front in the third quarter, but Collingwood quickly regrouped to run away with it in the end. The Magpies were brilliantly led by first-time skipper Nick Daicos, who racked up 32 touches, seven tackles and 11 clearances, while brother Josh was also influential with 36 possessions and nine marks. Ageless warrior Scott Pendlebury was typically composed with 31 touches and veteran forward Jamie Elliott kicked five brilliant goals up forward. But they were all trumped for the Anzac Medal by Steele Sidebottom, who wound back the clock with a ridiculous 15 clearances among 36 touches. It's the second time the 34-year-old has won the medal with his first coming way back in 2016. 'It's such a special day for our country and for us to represent the AFL world on this day means a lot,' he said. Sidebottom polled a perfect 12 votes from the judges to beat out Elliott (seven) and Josh Daicos (five), while Nick failed to poll a vote. Essendon captain Zach Merrett was once again among his side's best with 23 touches and six tackles, while Sam Durham kicked two goals from the midfield. Nate Caddy and Peter Wright worked tirelessly up forward and finished with two goals apiece. After falling behind early in the third quarter, Collingwood kicked 10 of the next 12 goals to ensure they would again finish the round on top of the ladder following their sixth-straight win. It was Collingwood's fourth-straight Anzac Day win, but the result could come at a cost after key forward Daniel McStay was subbed off with a left knee issue. McStay appeared to suffer a heavy knock in a marking contest in the third quarter to the same knee he had reconstructed at the end of 2023. After causing Essendon nightmares for years, Jamie Elliott was the leading goal-kicker on the ground with five. Elliott, who kicked a famous match-winner after-the-siren to beat Essendon in 2022, snared four goals in the second-half, including the sealer with 10 minutes remaining. Collingwood stormed out of the blocks, with their 15-point lead at quarter-time belying their dominance across the ground. The Magpies pushed their advantage to 27 points early in the second term, before Essendon slammed through six of the next seven goals to take the lead in the third quarter. But the ladder-leaders lifted again with five of the next six goals to take a comfortable 24-point buffer into the final change. Going into the game rank outsiders, Essendon had periods when they threatened to put themselves in position for an unlikely victory. Sam Durham kicked two goals in a minute in the second quarter, while Zach Reid continued his breakout season with another outstanding performance down back. Jack Crisp made it through his 244th consecutive match unscathed, setting him up to break the late Jim Stynes' record for most VFL/AFL games in succession when Collingwood battle Geelong next Saturday night. In an inconvenience for both teams in the second-half, power was off on the bench and communication up to the coach's box was limited.
