Ageless warrior Steele Sidebottom trumps Daicos brothers for Anzac Medal in Collingwood's big win
Collingwood have marched to their sixth consecutive victory with a hard-fought 41-point victory over Essendon in the traditional Anzac Day blockbuster at the MCG.
The Pies jumped the Bombers early before a four-goal blitz in the second term had the Dons back in the hunt by half-time.
Essendon hit the front in the third quarter, but Collingwood quickly regrouped to run away with it in the end.
The Magpies were brilliantly led by first-time skipper Nick Daicos, who racked up 32 touches, seven tackles and 11 clearances, while brother Josh was also influential with 36 possessions and nine marks.
Ageless warrior Scott Pendlebury was typically composed with 31 touches and veteran forward Jamie Elliott kicked five brilliant goals up forward.
But they were all trumped for the Anzac Medal by Steele Sidebottom, who wound back the clock with a ridiculous 15 clearances among 36 touches.
It's the second time the 34-year-old has won the medal with his first coming way back in 2016.
'It's such a special day for our country and for us to represent the AFL world on this day means a lot,' he said.
Sidebottom polled a perfect 12 votes from the judges to beat out Elliott (seven) and Josh Daicos (five), while Nick failed to poll a vote.
Essendon captain Zach Merrett was once again among his side's best with 23 touches and six tackles, while Sam Durham kicked two goals from the midfield.
Nate Caddy and Peter Wright worked tirelessly up forward and finished with two goals apiece.
After falling behind early in the third quarter, Collingwood kicked 10 of the next 12 goals to ensure they would again finish the round on top of the ladder following their sixth-straight win.
It was Collingwood's fourth-straight Anzac Day win, but the result could come at a cost after key forward Daniel McStay was subbed off with a left knee issue.
McStay appeared to suffer a heavy knock in a marking contest in the third quarter to the same knee he had reconstructed at the end of 2023.
After causing Essendon nightmares for years, Jamie Elliott was the leading goal-kicker on the ground with five.
Elliott, who kicked a famous match-winner after-the-siren to beat Essendon in 2022, snared four goals in the second-half, including the sealer with 10 minutes remaining.
Collingwood stormed out of the blocks, with their 15-point lead at quarter-time belying their dominance across the ground.
The Magpies pushed their advantage to 27 points early in the second term, before Essendon slammed through six of the next seven goals to take the lead in the third quarter.
But the ladder-leaders lifted again with five of the next six goals to take a comfortable 24-point buffer into the final change.
Going into the game rank outsiders, Essendon had periods when they threatened to put themselves in position for an unlikely victory.
Sam Durham kicked two goals in a minute in the second quarter, while Zach Reid continued his breakout season with another outstanding performance down back.
Jack Crisp made it through his 244th consecutive match unscathed, setting him up to break the late Jim Stynes' record for most VFL/AFL games in succession when Collingwood battle Geelong next Saturday night.
In an inconvenience for both teams in the second-half, power was off on the bench and communication up to the coach's box was limited.

AFL Geelong Cats star Jeremy Cameron drops Bailey Smith truth bomb after big win, Brownlow betting plunge
Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News. Bailey Smith has earned widespread praise from his teammates after another starring role in Geelong's 95-point thrashing of Essendon on Saturday night. Smith has been in the spotlight ever since his high profile move from the Western Bulldogs, fined for some on-field gestures and drawing concern over a 'nose beers' social media post. It all led to the extraordinary move of a face-to-face meeting with AFL chief executive Andrew Dillon during the week. FOX FOOTY, available on Kayo Sports, is the only place to watch every match of every round in the 2025 Toyota AFL Premiership Season LIVE in 4K, with no ad-breaks during play. New to Kayo? Get your first month for just $1. Limited-time offer. After that chat, and a week off for a hamstring issue, the blond midfielder returned with 41 disposals, six clearances and 760 metres gained in the Cats' 23.13 (151) to 8.8 (56) annihilation of the Bombers at the MCG. After the game, Cats spearhead Jeremy Cameron – who booted six goals for the night – was asked on Fox Footy how Smith handled 'being most talked about player in the game'. 'I think he handles it pretty well, doesn't he?' Cameron replied. 'He's got a good spot there at home when he gets away and when he's at the football club, what he's done for us as players has been absolutely amazing. Bailey Smith of the Cats takes a selfie with fans after Geelong's demoltion of Essendon. (Photo by) 'We've got his back right through whatever it is during the week. We'll always have his back and back him in to do what he does. 'He's brilliant out here on the field, but inside the locker room he's even better, which is hard to believe but it's true. 'We look forward to seeing what he can do in the back half of the year.' Smith and his new midfield teammate Max Holmes are forming a devastating partnership around the ground, with the latter contributing 36 possessions, eight clearances and 871 metres gained of his own. Fox Footy were keen to push the 'Dash brothers' tag on the emerging duo and Holmes had a cheeky dig at Smith when asked about him post-match. Smith had 41 disposals against the Bombers. (Photo by) One half of Geelong's 'Dash Brothers', Max Holmes had 36 touches himself.. (Photo by) 'I shook my head because he came off with 39 (disposals) and he wasn't supposed to go back on,' Holmes said. 'Clearly he was thinking about my 40 last week, so he wanted to out do me. Little so and so there. 'He cops it in the media and pretty unfairly a lot of the time. 'It's great to see him just shut out the noise on game day and play good footy. 'With Bailey in the side hopefully we're a better team than last year.' During the week, Dillon reiterated to Smith his importance as a role model after some of his recent acts had overstepped the mark. But his coach Chris Scott felt like it should be viewed in a positive light and nothing to generate negative talk. 'I don't think (Smith) felt like there was focus on him,' Scott said. 'I understand that there were questions around it, but I thought it was more the interest in something that's a bit unusual, like a conversation around the fire that didn't really light very well. 'It's rare for an AFL CEO to do that with a young player. 'We appreciated it, it was a step in the right direction, but maybe I misread it and I don't follow much of that stuff, but I didn't feel like it was a negative that would've put pressure on him. AFL CEO Andrew Dillon (right) met with Bailey Smith at his home last week. (Photo by) 'If there's a bit of a sense that there's some controversy in a negative sense towards him, I don't think we're feeling it, or I'm not seeing it anyway, but sometimes coaches are the last to know.' As is always the case with the 24-year-old Smith, he drew a wide range of comments online after his latest impressive display on the field. One tweet declared: 'Bailey Smith is gonna win the Brownlow isn't he.' Another said: 'Bailey Smith is easily the best player in the league right now, bar none!' A third agreed, saying: 'Bailey Smith might actually be a lock for the Brownlow.' Smith is now a $3 favourite for the Brownlow Medal with Sportsbet, ahead of Adelaide's Jordan Dawson ($3.75) and Collingwood's Nick Daicos ($5.50). Smith had odds as long as $51 with some bookies pre-season. Jeremy Cameron kicked another bag of goals to lead the Coleman Medal. (Photo by Michael Willson/AFL Photos via Getty Images) Yet others weren't quite so convinced about his stats and overall impact. 'Bailey Smith the master of the stat pad. Handballs to someone under pressure to get the handball receive every single time,' came one observation. 'Even though he's so impactful, it feels like Bailey Smith wanders around and gets lost within the game,' suggested another. 'Bailey Smith would average 150 if he could kick,' offered a SuperCoach fan. Sitting second on the ladder, the Cats next face a huge Friday night clash with reigning premiers Brisbane in Geelong on June 20. - with NewsWire Originally published as Geelong teammates support Bailey Smith amid mammoth betting plunge

Scans confirm De Koning injury; Clarko envious of Collingwood's fixture ‘gifts'
Clarkson envies Collingwood's MCG stability North Melbourne's venture into WA has been an early success, but coach Alastair Clarkson says they would love nothing more than to have the same MCG 'gifts' Collingwood receive. The Kangaroos have played at seven different stadiums over the past nine matches – a hectic schedule that even Collingwood star Scott Pendlebury can't help but laugh about. The Kangaroos finished their two-week stint in Western Australia with a brave six-point loss to Fremantle at Optus Stadium on Saturday night. A week earlier, North Melbourne beat West Coast by 10 points in Bunbury - a coastal town about two hours south of Perth. Loading The two matches in WA were technically North Melbourne home games. It's part of a three-year deal worth about $7.5m in which North Melbourne will 'host' two games a season in Perth. The Kangaroos agreed to the deal given their current contract with playing games in Tasmania is winding down. As one of the poorest clubs in Victoria, selling games is a necessary evil. Over their past nine matches, North Melbourne have played at Marvel Stadium (three times), Barossa Park, Adelaide Oval, Ninja Stadium, the MCG, Hands Oval and Optus Stadium. It's in stark contrast to Collingwood, whose huge crowd-pulling power means they are often scheduled to play at the MCG and rarely have to travel interstate compared to other sides. In Collingwood's fixture this year, 14 of their 23 games are at the MCG, and they only have six interstate games - one of which was for Gather Round. It's no wonder Pendlebury had a chuckle with North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson when they crossed paths recently. 'It's funny. I ran into Scotty Pendlebury, I was on the same plane when I came back from the Hall of Fame on Wednesday,' Clarkson said. Loading 'Anyway, he was laughing about the amount that we've had to travel, compared to the gifts that they get playing at the MCG on a regular basis. 'I'd like to be like the Pies and just play at the MCG most weeks. 'But the Collingwood side are able to generate their revenue from their crowds and their opportunities. 'They get to play at the MCG and North aren't in that position at this current time. So we need to get on the road and play our games [in] Tassie, [or] in this case WA. Loading 'We're happy to do so, because if we don't it puts the competition and our club in a perilous state if we can't balance the books.' A crowd of 31,408 attended the North-Fremantle game on Saturday night. Although Fremantle understandably enjoyed the bulk of the support, there was a large contingent of North fans, and they let their presence be felt when the Kangaroos stormed from 28 points down to level the scores late in the match.

West Coast Eagles star Harley Reid set to face scrutiny for stray elbow to Carlton Blues' Lachie Fogarty
West Coast star Harley Reid could face scrutiny from the Match Review Officer for an incident with Carlton's Lachie Fogarty during the second quarter of their clash at Optus Stadium. Reid threw his left arm back after being run down in a tackle and it made contact with the Blue's face. Fogarty was far from impressed and instantly remonstrated with the Eagle. Reid will be hoping to avoid any penalty given West Coast have a bye next week which would mean a potential suspension would keep him out of action until round 17. WATCH THE INCIDENT IN THE VIDEO PLAYER ABOVE It would also prevent him from playing in front of friends and family against Collingwood in Victoria. Reid has had another frustrating day with the midfielder conceding four free kicks in the first half. That has lifted his season tally to 40 free kicks for the season.
