Chiranjeevi, Ram Charan demand one home-cooked Indian meal abroad even after dining at world's best restaurants, says Upasana Kamineni: ‘I travel with dry home foods'

Ram Charan's wife and businesswoman Upasana Kamineni, vice-chairman of Apollo Charity, recently spoke about the actor's fondness for home-cooked South Indian meals. During a recent interaction, Upasana revealed that despite dining at some of the best restaurants in the world when they are travelling, Ram Charan insists on having at least one Indian meal a day. This habit eventually inspired her to launch her own dry home foods venture, Athamma's Kitchen. Speaking to Curly Tales, Upasana shared that she started the venture for her own convenience, as she would carry these dry, home-cooked meals with them while traveling abroad. She recalled, 'I started as a convenience because it was my problem. We used to go to the best restaurants in the world and then he would come and say, 'Okay, now I need Indian food.' I was like, 'Where will we find Indian food at 11:30 pm in the night?' Then we would go searching for Indian food in different countries because one meal of his has to be Indian, and it has to be breakfast or dinner. And not North Indian—his food has to be South Indian, and it has to be home-cooked. And when he is shooting, then it is a must.' Ram Charan's love for traditional meals comes from his father, superstar Chiranjeevi, who also insisted on eating home-cooked South Indian food while traveling. Upasana revealed that the concept for Athamma's Kitchen came from her mother-in-law, Surekha (Chiranjeevi's wife), who would prepare pre-mixes and send them with Chiranjeevi during his travels and shoots. 'You just add water to it and upma, pongal would be ready,' she said. Upasana added, 'Now I travel with dry home foods everywhere. So I can just get everything ready in 10 minutes.' She also revealed Ram's go-to South Indian meal he simply can't do without. She shared that he needs to have rasam, rice with an omlette. 'It is healthy too as you get rasam that's good for health, protein from omlette. He likes it with onions and chillis,' Upasana said. In the same interview, Upasana also offered a rare glimpse of their family home in Hyderabad. The palatial bungalow is surrounded by a meticulously maintained, lush green lawn and features interiors that blend modern and traditional art influences. Ram Charan and Upasana were college friends before their bond turned into a relationship. The couple tied the knot on December 11, 2011, and welcomed their daughter, Klin Kaara Konidela, in 2023.
