Visakhapatnam: The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) officials arrested Dasari Eswara Rao, sub-inspector (SI) of police at Anakapalli town police station for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the complainant. The ACB officials said one SRJ Appa Rao, a gold merchant, let out his vacant shop to another person in May this year. However, the other person tried to steal gold ornaments from the neighboring shop by making a hole into the wall of his hired shop. Appa Rao locked the shop he let out and handed over the keys to the police. The accused sub-inspector demanded Rs 50,000 from Appa Rao for returning the keys and not indict him in the case. A 40-year-old man shot his relative dead with a country-made gun in Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, over a dispute involving gold jewellery, said a police official on Wednesday. Following a family fallout after his wife's death, Simma Appa Rao killed his uncle over withheld gold jewellery meant for his daughter's puberty ceremony.(Pexels) Vizianagaram district superintendent of police Vakul Jindal said Simma Appa Rao murdered his mother-in-law's brother S Appa Rao (60) around 5 pm on Tuesday at Musiram village of Kothavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram, as the latter was allegedly not returning his jewels. "Simma Appa Rao came in an auto rickshaw from Pathavalasa village of K Kotapadu mandal in Anakapalli district on Tuesday evening to Musiram and killed Appa Rao," Jindal told PTI. Following his wife's death, he saved her gold jewellery with his relative Appa Rao. Recently, his daughter attained puberty and as per local custom, Simma Appa Rao wanted to celebrate the occasion and asked his uncle to return the jewels. Instead, Appa Rao demanded that his relative come with the local sarpanch, which provoked Simma Appa Rao and led to murder, police said. Jindal said Simma Appa Rao is on the run and it is illegal to own country-made guns. Police registered a case under BNS Section 103 and Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act.

SVU V-C unveils roadmap on academic transformation

Tirupati: SV University Vice Chancellor Prof Ch Appa Rao delivered a keynote presentation at the National Workshop on Multidisciplinary Education and Research University (MERU), organised by the Ministry of Education under the PM-USHA initiative in New Delhi on Wednesday. Representing SVU as the coordinating institution for Session 4—focused on 'Future of Work and Courses in Emerging Areas', Prof Appa Rao outlined a forward-looking strategic roadmap addressing workforce preparedness and academic transformation. His thematic presentation, developed in collaboration with five leading state universities, emphasised the urgent need for universities to adapt to rapid technological and industry changes. Key proposals included curriculum reform to introduce interdisciplinary and flexible learning paths, integration of emerging fields such as AI and renewable energy, and a stronger focus on digital fluency and entrepreneurship. The roadmap also called for enhanced industry-academia collaboration, robust research clusters, faculty development, and inclusive digital outreach. Prof T Ramasri, Coordinator, RUSA and Rayala Vamsi, CEO, RUSA, also represented SVU at the workshop, contributing to the formulation of the joint roadmap.
