Apple Expands Official Self Service Repair Options to Include iPads

Having iPad trouble? With Apple's May 29 expansion of its Self Service Repair Store, you may be able to fix your device at home. Users will have the choice of taking their iPads into an Apple Store Genius Bar or attempting certain repairs by themselves -- with help from Apple's own resources. The Self Service Repair Store will now offer genuine iPad parts (including displays, batteries, cameras and charging ports), repair toolkits and the ability to arrange an Apple Diagnostics session, among other add-ons. This change also affects independent repair providers who were not previously able to legally repair iPads or offer parts to customers. The service expansion will apply to iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16) models. This follows past expansions Apple has made to its self-repair program, begun in 2022, such as adding the MacBook Pro in 2023. At the time, we noted that this move may be in response to the Right to Repair movement, which has led to repair-oriented legislation in all 50 states. Whatever the reason, Apple has now expanded its own self-repair options to tablet owners. "At Apple, our goal is to create the world's greatest products that last as long as possible," Brian Naumann, Apple's vice president of AppleCare, said in a statement. "With today's announcement, we're excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy." Apple also announced that its Self Service Repair options would be expanding into Canada this summer, making it the 34th country offering the program. A representative for Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple expands Self Service Repair to iPads

Apple's Self Service Repair program is expanding to the iPad, the tech giant announced on Wednesday. The program will give iPad owners the tools they need to repair their devices at home. They can get access to repair manuals, genuine Apple parts, Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions, tools, and rental toolkits. Starting Thursday, users who have an iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16) can order repair kits and components, including displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging ports. 'At Apple, our goal is to create the world's greatest products that last as long as possible,' said Brian Naumann, Apple's vice president of AppleCare, in a press release. 'With today's announcement, we're excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy.' Launched in 2022, Self Service Repair allows consumers to do their own repairs at home if they're comfortable doing so by getting access to the same manuals used at Apple Store locations and Apple Authorized Service Providers. Apple says the program now supports 65 Apple products, including the recently released iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio. The company shared that Canada will soon become the 34th country where Apple offers Self Service Repair. Apple also revealed more details about its Genuine Parts Distributor program, which allows independent mobile repair professionals to order genuine Apple service parts and components. These parts are available via authorized third-party distributors, such as MobileSentrix in the U.S., plus MobileSentrix and in Europe. Genuine Parts Distributor offers many Apple parts for iPhone repairs, including displays, batteries, and charging ports, with iPad parts coming tomorrow

Your iPad gets an exciting update that fixes a dilemma with Apple's tablets

Apple iPad owners will soon find they can keep their tablets longer thanks to a big update from Apple. We've all been there. Your iPad feels like it's on its last legs but you don't want to splash out on something new. It's often a dilemma for consumers as the screen and case might look good as new but the battery and charging ports have seen better days. Getting an iPad fixed at an authorised repair centre can be expensive and time-consuming, but from this week, it will be possible to mend things from the comfort of your own home. Apple has just announced a big update to its Self Service Repair, which now adds the iPad to the list of devices that can be DIY repaired. ‌ This basically means those who feel confident enough, can order official spare parts, tools and manuals and have a go at mending things themselves. The idea is to help users get as much life out of their products as possible, rather than sending them to landfill. ‌ iPad parts that can now be fixed on the kitchen table include displays, batteries, cameras, and external charging ports. 'At Apple, our goal is to create the world 's greatest products that last as long as possible,' said Brian Naumann, Apple's vice president of AppleCare. 'With today's announcement, we're excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy.' Models that will be part of the new scheme include Pad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). The iPad isn't the first device to get access to self-repairs, with 65 Apple products now fixable without needing a specialist getting involved including the iPhone 16e, MacBook Air, and Mac Studio. Over the past several years, Apple has also accelerated its repair footprint by expanding the number of professional service locations that have access to genuine Apple parts, tools, and training. Repair options include Apple Store locations, Apple Authorised Service Providers, Independent Repair Providers, mail-in repair centres, Self-Service Repair, and the Genuine Parts Distributor program. The iPad update starts tomorrow, May 29, and includes the UK and Europe.

Save Money, Make Your iPad Last Longer: New Apple Self-Repair Service Available

You can now fix issues with your iPad yourself, Apple announced, as its Self Service Repair option will shortly be available for the iPad, meaning 65 Apple products can now be repaired by customers as well as Apple, for instance, for out-of-warranty repairs. Apple's iPads are now available for self-repair. Brian Naumann, Apple's vice president of AppleCare made the announcement on May 28. 'At Apple, our goal is to create the world's greatest products that last as long as possible. With today's announcement, we're excited to expand our repair services to more customers, enabling them to further extend the life of their products — all without compromising safety, security, or privacy,' Naumann said. The iPad has been a durable gadget since day one. Famously, the British Airways all-business-class flights between London and New York used personal first-generation iPads instead of seatback screens. The iPads lasted almost a decade and still looked great at the end. But over the years, a new battery could be needed. Or maybe you've cracked the screen or damaged the camera, butterfingers. If you're a dab hand at fixing stuff, you can now use the Self Service Repair to sort these problems yourself. The system offers access to the same repair manuals, genuine Apple parts and tools that Apple uses in its stores. There are Apple Diagnostics troubleshooting sessions and rental toolkits available so you can tackle the issue, or take it to an independent repair business which doesn't have a direct service relationship with Apple. Components available also include external charging ports and the service is initially available for iPad Air (M2 and later), iPad Pro (M4), iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad (A16). The service, which arrived in 2022, supports 65 Apple products when the iPads join the roster, from Thursday May 29. It's available in the U.S. and Europe, and will come to Canada this summer.

Apple's latest iPad is on sale for $50 off ahead of Memorial Day

Whether you're traveling for a vacation or just relaxing in the sunshine, a tablet is one of the easiest ways for you and your family to stay entertained while out and about during the summer. If you're looking for a new tablet, Amazon is selling the most recent Apple iPad (A16) for $50 off. It's an 11-inch model powered by the A16 chip. You can buy the 128GB tablet in any of the four available colors — silver, blue, pink or yellow — of the tablet for $299. If you need more storage, you can opt for the 256GB model for $399 or the 512GB version for $595. All of these discounts are for the WiFi only models and do not include any time under the Apple Care protection plan. Apple has a bunch of different iPads for sale these days, and the A16 one is our favorite budget option for this brand. That's because although the A16 chip is notably less powerful than the M3 or M4 you'll find in higher-end tablets, this model still performs well on the basic tasks that you'd use an iPad for. This iPad has a liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2360x1640. Again, it's not flashy, but plenty serviceable. One additional caveat for the A16 is that it can't run Apple Intelligence, so this isn't the iPad for you if you're looking to experiment with lots of AI tools. But for about $300, it's a great starter option if you want to have an easy way to play games, watch shows or read on a larger screen.
