Apple Launches Emoji Game to Rival Wordle With Smart Clue System

Apple has launched a new daily word game called Emoji Game. It is available on Apple News Plus. The game is similar to Wordle but uses emoji instead of letters. Players get one puzzle each day. They drag and drop emoji into blank spaces to complete words or phrases. The game includes regular emoji and Genmoji. Genmoji are new emoji made using Apple Intelligence. These add more fun and variety to the puzzles. Anyone can try one puzzle each day for free. To unlock more puzzles and older ones, you need an Apple News Plus subscription. To play, your device must run iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later. Apple will also add the game to the Apple Games app later this year. Apple News Plus costs 12.99 dollars per month after a free trial. It includes magazines, news stories, and other games like mini crosswords and Emoji Game.

Bigfoot Joins the Next Emoji Lineup Arriving in 2026

On World Emoji Day, the Unicode Consortium has given emoji fans something to look forward to with a sneak peek at new designs coming next year in Unicode 17.0. Among the standout additions? Bigfoot — officially called the 'hairy creature.' The fresh batch includes fun new icons like an apple core, ballet dancers, a distorted face, a fight cloud, an orca, a treasure chest, and a trombone. Unicode's Erik Thompson confirmed the new emoji will 'likely' land on devices by spring 2026. Though that seems far off, designing and approving emoji is a surprisingly complex process. To celebrate World Emoji Day, Apple has launched an exclusive emoji word game for Apple News Plus subscribers. Emojipedia has also relaunched letting users track real-time emoji trends around the globe. This new set is bound to add extra fun to everyday messages — and Bigfoot might just become everyone's new favourite.

Apple's Emoji Game for News Plus Subscribers Could Be Your Latest Puzzle Obsession

Do we 💖 this? Just in time for World Emoji Day, Apple News Plus has launched Emoji Game in another indication that we will never have enough digital toys to entertain and divert us. In the new game -- available in English for News Plus subscribers in the US and Canada -- players will try to fill in the blanks of three short phrases using a selection of emoji and genmoji using as few moves as possible. For example, if the phrase is "- - - - - of my - - - ("Apple of my eye"), then you would use the apple and eyes emoji to fill in those blanked-out words. There will be clues for each of the three phrases, but if the player chooses to reveal any of the clues, that will count as a move. Game Center leaderboards will track results, and players can share their accomplishments with friends and family on messages, email and social media. "Emoji Game is the perfect addition to the Apple News+ suite of word and number puzzles, turning the emoji we use every day into a brainteaser that's approachable and fun," said Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News in a press release. Emoji Game will appear daily in the Puzzles section of the Apple News app, and Apple News+ subscribers can also play the puzzle in the Apple Games app, which will launch later this year and will host Emoji Game as well as crossword, crossword mini, Quartiles, and sudoku. Only hours after the announcement, the r/apple Subreddit was already popping with reactions: "I wish we had that in my country. I love the nyt games Id like to try apple ones" "I just tried it, it's pretty fun" "Looks like fun!" For now the game is available in English for Apple News Plus subscribers in the U.S. and Canada and for iPhone, iPad and Mac running iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4 or later.

Apple just found a new way to make one of its apps a bit more tempting

Apple just gave its users another reason to check out Apple News+ – and no, it's not another news article. It's a game. The company just dropped a brand-new title called Emoji Game. It joins the growing lineup of word and number puzzles that already includes Crossword, Sudoku and Quartiles, giving subscribers another fun way to kill time and challenge their brains. Launching just in time for World Emoji Day (yes, it's a thing celebrated on July 17), the new game is available now for Apple News+ subscribers in the US and Canada, in English. – Lauren Kern, editor-in-chief of Apple News, July 17, 2025 Emoji Game is a mix of wordplay and logic. Each day, players are given three short phrases with missing parts – and the challenge is to complete them using emojis. You get a limited set to work with and the fewer moves you make, the better. If you are stuck, you can reveal a clue for each phrase – but that also adds to your move count. The Emoji Game challenges you to solve short phrases using emoji. | Image by Apple One of the unique touches here is the use of Genmoji, or custom emojis created with Apple Intelligence, which gives Apple a bit more flexibility than the standard emoji set. In other words, you're not limited to the emojis on your keyboard – Apple's throwing in AI-powered ones, too. Scores are tracked through Game Center, and of course, you can share results with friends through Messages, Mail, or social media. You'll find the game in the Puzzles section of the Apple News app, and later this fall, Emoji Game will also be available through the Apple Games app, a new hub for casual gaming and puzzle lovers. Apple isn't the only one using puzzles to boost engagement – The New York Times, for example, has seen major success with its own games. Apple doesn't reveal how many people play its games, but it does say that a lot of users subscribe to News+ just for the puzzles. Secure your connection now at a bargain price! Apple News+ adds a new game that uses emoji and Genmoji to sovle puzzles

Apple is introducing a new reason to upgrade to its subscription news offering, Apple News+: more games. On Thursday, the company announced the addition of the Emoji Game, an original title that will join its other games, including its Crossword puzzle, Crossword Mini, Sudoku, and word game Quartiles, in both the U.S. and Canada in English. Bundling games with other services has proven a successful strategy to attract users and keep them engaged, as The New York Times and even LinkedIn have discovered. Apple won't share its user numbers around Games, but it says that many people subscribe to News+ just for the puzzles. Released to coincide with World Emoji Day, the new Emoji Game is part logic, part word game that's inspired by how we use emojis to communicate with one another. In this daily game, players try to solve phrases using emojis with the goal of completing the puzzle in the least number of moves possible. For instance, if the word 'appear' showed up in the puzzle, you might see the letters 'ap' followed by four blank spaces. Then, you'd drag the emoji for the pear up into the blanks to complete the word. Of course, the phrases in the Emoji Game will be a bit harder to guess. Plus, the emoji you need to solve the puzzle will often be found in emoji combinations or those that involve a bit of abstract thinking to come up with the answer. The word for the emoji may also be used to fill in blank spaces that have other letters in between them. If you're stumped, you can unveil a clue below the phrase, but this will cost you one of your moves. There are multiple phrases to solve each day to complete the full puzzle. Finishing in six moves is considered a perfect score, and leaderboards help you track your streaks and how your scores compare with friends and other users. In the upcoming iOS 26, you'll be able to challenge friends to play with you using the new Games app. To make the game more Apple-specific, it also leverages the recently introduced Genmoji, or the custom emojis that are created using Apple Intelligence, the company's AI. This expands the emojis available beyond the fewer than 2,000 that ship with your emoji keyboard. For instance, you might see a Genmoji of a blender and an emoji of a tomato to make the word 'purée.' The game is built in partnership with a third-party, The Puzzle Society (now GoComics), and is edited by Apple puzzle editors. It's rolling out now to Apple News+ subscribers in the U.S. and Canada on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. (Users on iOS 18.4 and later won't need to update their app to gain access to the game, but those on older versions will.) The News+ subscription also comes with access to over 400 premium publishers, narrated audio, local news, sports, and, most recently, a recipe-saving feature, Apple News+ Food.
