Plans to build over 1,700 flats on site of former goods yard

More than 1,700 flats and one room studios are to built on land in Glasgow's Calton area if plans get approved next week. The site at the former College Street Goods Yard beside No.4 Parsonage Square is currently made up of empty land and a car park. A proposal has been lodged to construct six blocks of student accommodation and to build flats to rent, along with shops, commercial, and food and drink premises on the plot. One block would rise to 20 storeys, with others reaching 15, 12, and nine storeys. The planning application from Apsley (High Street, Glasgow) Limited faces 39 objections, including one from Calton Community Council. There were 17 letters of support and two neutral comments. A council paper said: 'The proposed development comprises 713 build to rent residential units consisting of studios, one, two and three bedroom apartments and purpose-built student accommodation containing 999 student beds which are a mix of studios and cluster flats.' Objections included concerns about height, road safety, traffic, parking, a lack of public transport, and the scale of development. Supporters pointed out that, among other benefits, it would bring a derelict brownfield site back into use and help ease the housing emergency. Planning officials have recommended the development should be granted subject to planning obligations in a Section 75 Agreement. A design statement said: 'Once complete, the College Gardens development will have a transformative impact on the eastern fringes of Glasgow's City Centre. 'The site will be transformed from a surface car park to a vibrant residential neighbourhood combining new homes with high-quality green spaces and unlocking improved connectivity throughout the wider area.' It added: 'The new homes on the site will bring improved footfall to surrounding high streets, strengthening the local economy. An intergenerational housing offer will enable the creation of a rich and diverse community on site, with a generous mix of amenity spaces at street level.' According to a council paper, the development is to have 45 car parking spaces, cycle storage, and free bike hire for residents. There is to be greenspace in the centre of the development with planting, play areas, and paths. Councillors are due to make a decision on the bid at the planning applications committee next week. Man convicted of killing Ontario couple now charged in cold case murder, police say

Provincial police say a man convicted of killing an Ontario couple in the early 1990s has now been charged in a cold case murder. Ontario Provincial Police say they've charged 70-year-old David Alexander Snow with first-degree murder, 34 years after the body of 40-year-old Angelien Quesnelle was found near Apsley, Ont. A spokesperson for the force confirmed the suspect is the same man who was convicted of the 1992 murders of Toronto couple Ian and Nancy Blackburn, as well as other crimes in British Columbia. Snow is currently serving a life sentence for the Blackburn murders. The latest charge against him has not been tested in court. The OPP say their continued investigation of Quesnelle's death over the years led them to charge Snow with murder last week. 'For 34 years, her family has lived without answers' Const. Joe Brisebois said Monday that police could not release further details about that investigation as the case is before the courts. Quesnelle was first reported missing in October 1991, after she was last seen in Peterborough, Ont. Police say a hunter discovered her body on Nov. 15, 1991 and her death was deemed a homicide. "For 34 years, her family has lived without answers," OPP Det. Insp. Shawn Glassford said in a news release. "This arrest represents an important step toward providing Angelien's family and the community of Apsley with the long-awaited answers they deserve."

Museum centrepiece missing for five years seems finally set to return

An iconic museum centrepiece that has been missing for years could soon be back. The hugely popular Indian gharial, nicknamed Apsley, has not been seen by Swindonians since the borough's art gallery and museum closed for the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown. But she could well be on her way back home. Swindon Borough Council, which opened a renewed gallery and museum without Apsley in the upper storey of its civic offices in Euclid Street last year is certainly serving up some teasers. Historic pub set to be demolished saved by greenlight for new use Bus gates, no parking and 20mph limit: What new Fleming Way will be like A posting on the authority's Facebook page showed a dramatic picture of the 20-foot crocodile from its fishy prey's perspective, giving a close-up view of Apsley's rows of razor-sharp teeth under the legend 'it's been a while crocodile… Coming soon to Museum & Art Swindon.' It has also posted a cryptic video: A (slightly shaky) camera travels from Apsley House in Old Town to the civic offices, welcomed by council leader Councillor Jim Robbins and the recent Mayor Imtiyaz Shaikh, and up to the door of the museum. Coming Soon: Swindon's most famous resident returns to Museum & Art Swindon 🐊🏛️ — Swindon Borough Council (@SwindonCouncil) May 21, 2025 The caption says: 'Coming soon: Swindon's most famous resident returns to Museum & Art Swindon.' Assuming that the caption isn't suggesting Diana Dors or Billie Piper are soon to move into the civic offices, it seems likely it's another clue to the gharial's return.
