Jordan: Agriculture Ministry, International Fertiliser Association discuss environmental sustainability, food security
AMMAN — Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat on Thursday reiterated Jordan's commitment to supporting the transition towards environmentally friendly and sustainable fertiliser production. He also stressed the government's encouragement for national companies to invest in renewable energy and innovation, in line with Jordan's national objectives and ambitious policies for environmental sustainability and enhanced food security, in cooperation with international partners, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Speaking during a meeting with CEO and Director General of the International Fertiliser Association (IFA) Alzbeta Klein, Hneifat highlighted the leading role of the Arab Potash Company (APC) in Jordan's fertiliser industry. The minister, in the presence of APC CEO Maen Nsour, praised the company's contributions to local communities, national projects, and its support for the water-retaining environmental cocoon project, implemented by the Royal Scientific Society for Nature Conservation under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture and in cooperation with the company. Hneifat underscored the vital role played by the IFA as the global voice of the fertiliser industry, particularly in promoting sustainable agricultural practices, encouraging efficient fertiliser use, innovating nutrient management, and providing market information to improve the efficiency of global supply chains. He noted that the Kingdom is a 'key' partner in the global food security ecosystem, owing to its natural resources, particularly the production of potash and phosphate, two essential elements for crop growth and food security. Klein expressed appreciation for Jordan's pivotal role in supporting the global fertiliser industry through its production of phosphate and potash. She commended the APC as a national 'success' story and a key contributor to the global fertiliser sector. She also stressed the importance of the company's active participation in IFA committees and specialised programmes, particularly those focused on sustainability, innovation, and support for start-ups. © Copyright The Jordan Times. Jordan: Prime minister inaugurates $1.1bln APC southern expansion project
AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Tuesday inaugurated the Southern Expansion Project of the Arab Potash Company (APC), one of the Kingdom's most significant strategic industrial ventures, with an estimated investment of $1.1 billion. The inauguration ceremony, attended by APC Chairman Shehadah Abu Hdaib, CEO Maen Nsour, members of the board, and Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh, marked a major milestone in Jordan's efforts to boost industrial capacity and economic competitiveness, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Hassan commended APC's commitment to expanding its operations and tapping into new markets, noting that such efforts enhance Jordan's global standing in the potash and related industries. He emphasised the project's alignment with the Economic Modernisation Vision, which aims to spur economic growth and create sustainable employment opportunities. Hassan also highlighted the project's synergy with other national megaprojects, including the National Water Carrier, the Aqaba-Shidiya-Ghor Al Safi railway, and green hydrogen initiatives, describing them as essential pillars for Jordan's future development. The prime minister stressed the importance of equipping local communities, particularly in the southern governorates, with training and skill development programmes to ensure they benefit from the job opportunities the project will generate throughout its phases. He also commended APC's leadership in corporate social responsibility (CSR), saying the company has set a benchmark that has inspired other institutions to contribute to national development. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to institutionalising CSR through structured partnerships between the public and private sectors and local communities. The Southern Expansion Project is expected to raise APC's production capacity by 740,000 tonnes annually, bringing total output to approximately 3.7 million tonnes per year. The increase supports the objectives of the Economic Modernisation Vision, particularly in the mining and fertiliser sectors, key components of the national economy due to their potential to maximise returns on natural resources, enhance profitability and sustain economic growth. In addition to driving national exports and boosting foreign currency reserves, the project will increase state revenues through direct and indirect channels and generate new job opportunities, Petra reported. Project components include new evaporation ponds, a state-of-the-art potash production plant, and a granular potash facility, along with a series of advanced technical and engineering works. Preparatory engineering is slated to begin in the second half of 2025, with implementation to start next year and be completed within four years. APC Chairman Abu Hdaib said the project will reinforce Jordan's role in international food security by providing essential and specialised fertilisers to improve crop yields worldwide. He expressed gratitude for the continued royal support from His Majesty King Abdullah, which he said has been instrumental in enabling the company's growth. He also acknowledged the government's ongoing support for key projects, which he said has helped overcome challenges, accelerate progress, and solidify APC's role as a leading industrial entity both regionally and internationally. Abu Hdaib also extended special thanks to the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army for their efforts in clearing landmines from the project site, ensuring safe and timely project implementation. CEO Maen Nsour noted that the Southern Expansion Project is a cornerstone of APC's broader strategic plan, launched in 2019 when the company transitioned from foreign strategic investment to Jordanian management. The plan targets a 30 per cent increase in production by 2030, emphasising efficiency, diversification, and integrated production. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. The prime minister commends the mega mining company's allocation of JD30 million over the next three years to support the education and health sectors, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility programme (Prime Ministry photo) AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan on Sunday commended the Arab Potash Company (APC) for allocating JD30 million over the next three years to support the education and health sectors, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. During a meeting with APC Chairman Shehada Abu Hdeib, Hassan underscored the importance of such private sector contributions in complementing government efforts to improve vital public services. He noted that CSR contributions targeting education and health have reached nearly JD170 million over the past two months alone, according to a Prime Ministry statement. Hassan said that this latest commitment builds on the company's longstanding support for development and charitable initiatives across local communities. The prime minister also highlighted key commitments made in recent weeks, including JD90 million from the Association of Banks in Jordan over three years, JD40 million from the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company, and pledges by the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Company and Jordan Free Zones Company to dedicate 5 per cent of their annual profits to CSR. Hassan stressed the need to institutionalise CSR as a long-term development strategy that remains consistent regardless of changes in government or corporate leadership. He also stressed that specific projects to be funded through the CSR initiative will be identified on an annual basis, with the first round to be announced next month. "A dedicated account has been established at the Central Bank to manage these funds, which will be disbursed in coordination with contributing companies as implementation progresses," he added. He also noted that public facilities such as schools and health centres built with private sector support will be clearly marked to promote a culture of giving and strengthen public-private partnerships. Hassan also commended the APC for expanding its investments and enhancing its global competitiveness, pointing to a recent expansion agreement valued at over $800 million with the American company Palmarl. Abu Hdeib reiterated the company's commitment to national development, saying the JD30 million pledge reflects its dedication to supporting government-led initiatives and formalising CSR as a cornerstone of sustainable growth. 'Comprehensive development is not possible without real investment in people,' Abu Hdeib said, noting that the new initiative strengthens the partnership between the public and private sectors. He added that the new commitment will not affect the company's existing CSR programmes, which have collectively contributed more than JD66 million over the past five years. He also said that APC views itself as a national institution equally committed to profitability and meaningful, long-term service to Jordan and its people. Abu Hdeib also presented key projects under APC's 2025–2028 strategy, which focuses on expanding operations, boosting global competitiveness, and exploring new opportunities for one of Jordan's leading industrial companies. The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh and Government Communication Minister Mohammad Momani. The government has been actively encouraging the private sector to adopt a more structured and sustainable approach to CSR, particularly in sectors with high developmental and operational impact, with a focus on underserved governorates.
