Archery World Cup Stage 3 set to experiment rule changes for scoring and time conservation

The Archery World Cup Stage 3, starting in Antalya on Wednesday, will have some experimental rule changes, which will reduce the time and make the scoring clearer. Among the changes, two are significant: the number of arrows will reduce from 72 to 60 in the qualification round, and 11 points, instead of 10, will be allocated for an arrow hitting the 'X' ring. The existing system, offering a maximum possible score of 720, requires an archer to shoot 72 arrows with a break (at the halfway stage) in the qualification stage. Under the new rule, offering a maximum of 660, one needs to shoot 60 arrows without a break. Now, because of the 11-point shots, the situation can change drastically in match-plays. 'For Antalya, Atanu (Das) and Deepika (Kumari) practised shooting with more perfection and tried hitting the X more often. This required aggressive shooting. We shot for 14-15 rounds at one go instead of 10,' said the archer couple's personal coach Rahul Banerjee. RELATED | Archery World Cup Stage 3: Parth Salunkhe's rise fuels Indian hopes 'The changes have both positive and negative sides. The qualification round will be a challenge as it will test one's endurance. In elimination rounds, one can fight back even after shooting a below-par score, say an eight, by getting two 11s. 'The changes will help compound competitions, as several archers were getting high scores. Now, there will be fewer ties.' Olympian archer B. Dhiraj shared his views. 'I am not too bothered about the experimental changes. It will be challenging to switch back to the old format after two days and compete in the selection trials for the World championships,' said Dhiraj.

Indian compound archers crash out at World Cup Stage 3

Antalya: Indian compound archers disappointed at the Archery World Cup Stage 3 as none of them managed to reach the medal rounds in the individual and mixed categories here on Friday. India, who finished second behind South Korea with two gold, one silver, and four bronze medals at the previous stage in Shanghai, are yet to open their medal account here. Madhura Dhamangaonkar, the fourth seed and winner of the last World Cup, was ousted in the quarterfinals by fifth-seeded Mariana Bernal of Mexico. Madhura lost 152-159 in the women's individual section. Mariana was consistent throughout, while Madhura struggled to find her rhythm after an opening round of 29 out of a possible 33. World champion Aditi Swami also exited in the last-eight stage, going down 147-152 to Mexico's second-seeded Andrea Becerra.

Amravati's Madhura Helps India Reach Quarterfinals of Archery World Cup Stage 3 In Antalya

Nagpur: For the second successive time in the Archery World Cup, Madhura Dhamangaonkar, a small-town girl from Amravati, will lead India's campaign. Exactly 25 days after she spearheaded India's medal success with three podium finishes in Shanghai, Madhura continued her impressive run in the Archery World Cup Stage 3, which began in Antalya, Turkey, on Wednesday. At the second stage of the World Cup in Shanghai last month, Madhura helped India's compound archers achieve their highest medal count when she secured individual women's gold, women's team silver, and mixed team bronze medals. Continuing from where she left off in Shanghai, the 24-year-old Madhura finished fourth in the compound qualification round at Antalya to guide the Indian women's team to the quarterfinals. Thanks to Madhura's heroics, the Indian team secured the third seeding and a direct entry to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of Kazakhstan and Great Britain. If India crosses the quarterfinal hurdle, they will face the challenge of second-seeded and experienced Korea in the semifinals. In the qualification round, Madhura gave an impressive score of 600 to finish fourth, just three points behind South Korean legend Han Seungyeon (603). India's hat-trick of morning medals set the stage for young Madhura's afternoon show. On her return to the Indian team after three years, the 24-year-old delivered a stellar performance with a careerbest 708 points in the qualification round, thereafter reaching the semifinals. Facing Turkiye's world No.13 Hazal Burun in the semifinal, Madhura started strongly and took an early four-point lead (60-56) with back-to-back perfect scores of 30. Madhura was elated with her performance and said, 'I took this as a challenge. My intention was to take the bow and hit a 10 with confidence. I have been working on my mental strength and my shooting skills, and that's the reason I could perform better. Happy to start the year on a positive note and can say this is the big turning point of my career.' Much like Madhura, Haryana's Rishabh Yadav clinched his maiden World Cup medal when the 22-yearold registered a thrilling shoot-off win over South Korea's Kim Jongho in the men's individual bronze play-off. Despite losing his semifinal contest to World No. 1 and eventual champion Mike Schloesser of Netherlands 143-149, Yadav remained positive during his bronze medal match. On Sunday, India will be in the hunt for two more medals. Recurve archers Parth Salunkhe and Deepika Kumari will fight it out in the semis.
