Four Mexican visitors on e-bikes rescued from the Cairngorms

Four Mexican visitors on e-bikes were rescued early this morning after getting into difficulty in the Cairngorms. Braemar Mountain Rescue were called out by police at about 8.30pm on Sunday after a report of someone sustaining an ankle injury. Four members of the team initially headed out. Their number had grown to 16, however, by the time the rescue ended at around 1.30am on Monday. The team's operations manager, Malcolm MacIntyre, said the group, who were a party of four from Mexico, had hired e-bikes for their journey. The operation was complicated by none of the Mexican e-bikers speaking English. They had come from Blair Athol and cycled up Glen Tilt. The plan was then to head for Aviemore via Glen Geldie and then Glen Feshie. Four members of the Braemar Mountain Rescue team travelled into the grid reference using their Argocat off-road vehicle. 'One of them, we think the group leader, twisted her ankle,' Mr MacInyre said. 'Another person was concerned about a sore back. 'Fortunately they had met with two experienced bikers on a camping trip. 'They put up their tent to give the group shelter. 'We took the injured person out in our ATV to the nearest estate track and also walked the rest of them to that point. 'From there we were able to transport them all – and their bikes – to our base in Braemar. 'They were met there later by someone in their wider party with a van to go back to Aviemore.'

Kirstie Smith and team leader Ewan McKinnon were quick despite the conditions and both took home first prize in the category for Arran residents. A spokesperson for Arran Mountain Rescue Team said: "Whilst marshalling the Goatfell Hill Race in Saturday's sunny weather, the team were also called to assist a member of the public who took unwell. ‌ "They were checked over and evacuated from the hill by Argocat to a waiting ambulance and transported to hospital. We wish the casualty a speedy recovery. "It was a hot day for the runners and congratulations are due to all 101 runners who took part, including Arran Mountain Rescue Team member Kirstie Smith and team leader Ewan McKinnon who won first local female and first local male respectively."

In a live broadcast on the Cat and Fiddle Facebook page, owner Lindsay Bond said: "We've had a lot of enquiries for our safety and welfare and so far, touch wood, everyone's OK and the building is OK. "The periphery is being taken care by Cheshire Fire Service and Derbyshire Fire service. "We're discouraging people from visiting or coming up - there's ash and smoke in the vicinity and lots of emergency vehicles trying to do their job, so unless your journey is urgent I would avoid the area. "There are plumes [of smoke] just behind us, but luckily I think they are getting further away. It's all hands on deck here. What a dramatic day." In an update at around 5pm, the Peak District Moorland Group said the fire was the worst in the area since 2018. It said: "The area is under a United Utilities management regime and has had extensive interventions over the last 20 years. "With multiple nests of all ground nesting birds being burnt out and the fire heading towards commercial forestry, it's the worst this area has seen since the 2018 fires when 40 hectares burnt on Ravenslow, one of the most prized blanket bog areas in this location." In a statement earlier DFRS said: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a large wildfire near Errwood Reservoir in the Goyt Valley. Firefighters were mobilised to the incident following a call at 11.42am today. "Ten fire engines from Derbyshire and Cheshire are in attendance supported by a water carrier, an Argocat and a Unimog. We are receiving a high number of calls regarding a smoke plume which can be seen in the area. "A road closure is currently in place from the Errwood Hall car park. Please avoid the area. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed if affected by the smoke."
