1 2 Yavatmal/Amravati/Akola: Two people were killed in separate incidents after torrential rain wreaked havoc in Yavatmal district over the past two days. The deceased, identified as Arjun Uike of Kotamba and Bhagwan Bhende of Mahagaon taluka, had gone to their fields for work. They were caught in sudden heavy rain followed by flash floods and were swept away by the strong current. Swollen rivers, overflowing streams disrupted vehicular traffic leaving 17 villages cut off apart from severing vital links including the one between Yavatmal and Nanded. In another incident, a farmer was injured after being struck by lightning while working in a field at Kochchi village in Ghatanji taluka. The injured farmer, Shalik Akkawar, was rushed to the hospital by local residents. In Amravati district, the residents of Madhan, Sonori and Dhamangaon Thadi villages in Chandur Bazar tehsil, experienced cloudburst-like situation on Friday evening as heavy rain coupled with thunderstorm pounded the villages and caused extensive damage to standing crops. Rescue team was summoned to help people stranded in the swollen Purna river. Incessant downpour threw life out of gear in Akola district. While villages witnessed flash flood-like situation, urban areas struggled with severe waterlogging, disrupting daily life and traffic movement. Major roads in Akola city were submerged, forcing commuters to wade through waist-deep water. In Amravati's rural belt, heavy rains lashed Tiwsa, Morshi, and Warud regions. Overflowing streams and rivers flooded farmlands, damaging standing kharif crops. Murtizapur and Akot tehsils bore the brunt of the stormy rain. The Penganga river is flowing near the danger mark at Dhanoda village of Yavatmal district following the release of water from the Upper Penganga Project. This led to flooding and closure of the route towards Mahur. In Mandvi, floodwaters submerged the bridge over the Khuni river, forcing the closure of the Mandvi-Bori road and bringing traffic to a standstill. Umarkhed taluka has also been badly hit, with villages including Chatari, Darati, Gajegaon, Savaleshwar, Mankeshwar, Jewali, and Karanji reporting water entering homes and partial damage to houses. The Pus river too was in spate, disrupting vehicular traffic between Yavatmal and Pusad. The Arunavati river too is flowing near the danger mark, inundating agricultural fields near Mukindpur causing widespread crop loss. Amravati MP Balwant Wankhade visited the rain-affected villages on Saturday, inspected the loss and issued instructions to Chandur Bazar tehsildar to prepare proposals for compensation to farmers for crop loss and residents for property damage.
