Alex Lutky dreamt of walking off Franklin. The King Philip senior did so in the Division 1 quarterfinals

With a swift motion, Lutfy caught the pitch with the end of his bat, lifting it the opposite way to left, and the ball was not handled, dropping in to lift the fourth-seeded Warriors to a frenetic 2-1 win. Fairy-tale ending! Alex Lutfy lifts a bases-loaded single over Franklin's left fielder, who barely caught a piece of the ball but didn't manage to haul it in. Unreal. — Graham Dietz (@graham_dietz) KP (20-4) will take on No. 8 Braintree (15-8) in a state semifinal (TBD). 'You can't make that feeling up,' said Lutfy, who was 3 for 4 in the designated hitter spot. 'It's like Christmas morning. I don't know how else to put it. Probably the greatest thing I've ever done.' Advertisement 'We battle Franklin every year and they've had our number for quite a while,' King Philip coach Jeff Plympton Jr. said. 'This year, we got two wins against them [in the regular season] probably [for the first time] since 2016. If we won those two, we needed to win this one.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The game was a duel into the seventh, with Cam Hasenfus and Franklin's Zach Winer matching pitch for pitch. Winer yielded two hits over six innings, fanning seven, allowing an unearned run. Hasenfus scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort, walking one and striking out four. 'Unbelievable. MVP of the Hockomock, and it's not an easy thing to do — pitch like that in front of this environment,' Plympton Jr. said. 'Anytime he takes the mound, this team has tremendous energy, and they want to play for him … It felt like a basketball atmosphere there at the end.' Advertisement The Arlington Catholic baseball team shows off its new banner after advancing to the Division 3 state semifinals. Graham Dietz Division 3 State Arlington Catholic 5, Foxborough 3 — In the bottom of the sixth inning, in a bases-loaded, two-out jam, Arlington Catholic senior Matthew Toland saw his pitch ricochet off the bat of Foxborough's Ben Angelini. His reaction? 'Oh no.' A trip to the semifinals, the first in program history, was on the line. 'You know, this could be a bases-clearing double,' Toland said. 'But [Ryan Tarello]'s the fastest kid I know. He covers ground so well.' By the time Angelini's moonshot to center field reached its apex, Tarello was already perched under it with his mitt open. The ball landed safely into his glove, and 11th-seeded Arlington Catholic (16-6) was on its way to the victory in a game that was suspended Saturday (with AC on top, 3-1) because of rain. Toland put away all but one batter in the seventh, who walked, and recorded the final out himself by tossing a short grounder to first. 'Toland, he's the [Catholic Central] league MVP two years in a row,' Arlington Catholic coach Chris Hall said. 'We have confidence in all our pitchers, but he's been the central core. And it's ironic that when Matt pitches, Ryan goes to center, and he maybe made the catch of the program on that play.' In addition to pitching the final five innings, Toland also had two RBIs — one Saturday, and another in the top of the fourth when play resumed. Coleman O'Neill, Tyler Valente, Pat Clair and Trey Flaherty all collected hits, with Clair's RBI double to left-center in the top of the fifth increasing the lead to 5-1. Advertisement Aidan Stow had an RBI double for Foxborough in the fifth. 'It's obviously easy to pitch coming in with the lead,' Toland said. 'We just knew we had to come in here and get on them early, because we had to keep up the momentum and couldn't let them get anything.'

Nine high school sports takeaways from a Wednesday that showcased some of the state's best strikeout artists

On a night of big strikeout totals, nobody could compete with Westwood's Bridget Mulkeen , a Holy Cross-bound senior who not only fired a no-hitter to beat Medfield, 6-0, but surpassed 700 career strikeouts. A pair of juniors have a shot of crossing 700 next spring, but had to make do with reaching 500 career strikeouts Wednesday. Tyngsborough junior Kiley Hogan picked up her 500th career whiff while striking out 10 in a 7-0 blanking of Oakmont, and King Philip junior McCoy Walsh also joined the 500K club in a 16-0 win over Canton. Chelmsford senior Jillian Martin won her 300th career draw control in an 18-4 win over Groton-Dunstable, Stoughton freshman goalie Joe Toupin passed the 200-save mark on the season with 10 in a 17-4 loss to King Philip, Arlington Catholic junior Stephen Constantine netted his 200th career point in a 16-8 win over St. Mary's, Taunton sophomore Bella Bourque recorded her 100th career hit in a 12-0 win over Oliver Ames, and Winthrop senior Timmy Vargus spun an 11-strikeout no-hitter to beat Swampscott, 2-0. Walk-off wins We usually focus on walk-off hits or goals in this space, but Needham senior Maricel Pucillo provided another type of walk-off win when she made a game-saving catch in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and runners on second and third, preserving a 5-4 win over Milton. Watertown's first Middlesex League win in four years came via a double-overtime winner from senior Caleb Mayhew , who also netted the tying goal in the final two minutes of regulation, lifting the Raiders to a 9-8 victory vs. Stoneham. Triton freshman Ginger Thompson's bases-loaded walk-off single provided a 7-5 win over Hamilton-Wenham, Liam Connelly's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh pushed Canton past King Philip, 2-1, and Austin Prep's Luciana Igoe lofted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh for a 6-5 win over BB&N. 3. Three stars Jackie Giordano , Brooks — The senior from Andover fired a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts while also stepping up to the plate and delivering three hits, two runs, and an RBI in a 12-0 drubbing of Milton Academy. Mylee Ramer , Bishop Feehan — The senior did it all for the Shamrocks in a 9-0 win over Arlington Catholic, striking out 18 in a two-hitter, while collecting three hits and three RBIs, including a two-run homer to set the tone in the first inning. Andrew Cox and Shawn Laduke , Methuen — Cox, a junior, smashed 21 kills, and Laduke, a senior, doled out 47 assists in a 3-1 win over North Andover. Advertisement 4. Going, going, gone Hogan left the yard twice with solo shots for Tyngsborough, joining Brooks' Sophia Florencio with two longballs. King Philip got homers from Ali Gill , Liv Petrillo , and Cheyenne Murray in a 16-0 win over Canton and Marblehead's Lyla McGovern launched a grand slam in the seventh inning to beat Peabody, 10-7. The rest of the day's round-trippers belonged to Dighton-Rehoboth's Haleigh Kelley , Taunton's Cate Larson , Bishop Feehan's Caitlyn Deveney , Newton North's Ella Fahey , Tyngsborough's Katie O'Keefe , Bedford's Alyx Rossi , and Conor Secrist of St. John's (Shrewsbury). 5. MIAA lacrosse committees The boys' and girls' lacrosse committees met virtually and confirmed the timeline for the upcoming state tournament. Brackets should be released on May 28, tournament games can begin May 29 and will run until the state finals on June 13-14. Tournament director Dan Brothers said the goal is to finish the finals before Father's Day, June 15, but weather could cause postponements that would push some games back to that date. Brothers said the search is ongoing for different neutral sites for the boys' lacrosse championships, but top options such as Bentley, Boston University, Harvard Stadium, and Quincy's Veterans Stadium have been ruled out. It is likely that a high school will once again play host to the boys' lacrosse finals, as Burlington has hosted the past two years. The girls' lacrosse finals will once again be held at Babson. Longtime committee members attended their final meeting. Darrell Benson , the president of the World Series of Lacrosse and a longtime MIAA official, was on his final call with the boys' lacrosse committee. Officials representative Teri Riggs attended her final meeting with the girls' lacrosse committee, and advocated for splitting all JV and varsity games into quarters for injury purposes. Both committees discussed the implementation of a shot clock in upcoming seasons, citing reasons it improves the game. Since the MIAA plays under National Federation of High School rules, the committee will hold off on further discussion until the NFHS addresses shot clock rules this summer. 8. MIAA soccer committee No votes were held at the MIAA soccer meeting, but the committee made it clear they are not interested in a Super 8/Division 1A tournament. Advertisement Canton athletic director and committee chair Danny Erickson , Nipmuch AD Chris Schmidt , Monomoy AD Karen Guillemette , Agawam coach Laura Ramos , and Wayland coach Dave Gavron all expressed a lack of appetite for an additional tournament. 'I think our tournament runs great the way it is,' Erickson said. St. Mary's athletic director Jeff Newhall , the MIAA soccer tournament director, noted that 419 teams participated in the 2024 postseason, with 8,400 players taking the field, 4,600-plus tickets sold, and revenue of about $380,000, leading to a net profit of around $131,000, which was down slightly from the previous year due to the extra expense of holding finals at Worcester State and Curry College instead of Doyle and Manning fields. 'To have 8,400 kids participate in a tournament that makes money, I think is pretty good,' Newhall said. There was lengthy discussion on the lack of officials for sub-varsity games, with new officials liaison Matt DeNapoli stating that almost half the sub-varsity games he schedules have just one official. Several members expressed interest in expanding the 'The older generation of referees would certainly appreciate some help from young legs,' DeNapoli said. Related : The biggest hurdle is liability insurance, as well as some additional costs for Arbiter, the referee assigning portal. 9. 1. The milestones Apponequet senior Kenny Wisniewski enjoyed an 11-point afternoon, not unusual for the Lakers' prolific scorer, who also netted his 300th career point while scoring six goals with five assists in a 13-2 win over Somerset Berkley.
