West Lothian football club issue plea to parents after stadium smashed up by youths

Armadale Thistle Club Secretary Scott Watson expressed his frustration at the situation which is leaving the club thousands out of pocket. A West Lothian junior football team have been left reeling after their grounds were once again damaged by thoughtless vandals. ‌ Armadale Thistle Club Secretary Scott Watson spoke with Edinburgh Live to express his frustration at the situation which is leaving the club thousands out of pocket. ‌ Those at the club have had to cough up around £2,000 to repair a tractor two years ago and the latest act of vandalism at Volunteer Park is now said to cost the club a further £1,000. ‌ What frustrates Scott the most is he argues Thistle are one of the few community hubs left in the village, with members of the club working tirelessly to try to provide facilities for youths in the area. 'It seems to be one of those summers where the youths go nuts,' Scott said. 'We got portacabins at the back of the stadium and the windows and interior have been smashed to bits. 'It has just been a constant. They climb over the walls and cause havoc. ‌ 'There is nothing for them to do around here for them, the baths closed recently and it has just led to them smashing the place up. What they don't realise if we are working on trying to do something for them. 'We try and help the community as best we can but then a couple of morons waste it for everyone. It's mindless - we are one of the few things left in Armadale. 'They've broken the plastic in the dug outs, kicked in the committee door and are continuously breaking windows. The recent damage will cost us about £1,000 to repair. ‌ 'Two years ago we had to fork out a couple of thousand after they broke the tractor.' Scott and those at the club have pleaded with parents in the tight knit community to take action and educate their children on the importance of respecting the club and those who volunteer their time to support the team. ‌ Images show the extensive damage caused by those breaking into the ground, with windows and the interior of the newly acquired portacabins completely destroyed. In a statement on Facebook, Armadale Thistle FC added: 'We are saddened to share that Volunteer Park has once again, been victim of recent vandalism. 'Armadale Thistle FC are a community club used and enjoyed by men, women and children every single day and night of the week. ‌ 'It's more than just a football ground. It's a space where friendships are built, memories are made, and passion for the game is passed down through generations. 'But this only works because of the incredible efforts of our volunteers—people who give up their own time, energy and resources to keep this club running for everyone. 'That's why we're asking all parents and guardians please have a conversation with your children about the importance of respecting our facilities; help us ensure they understand what this club means to so many and help us protect what we've all worked so hard to build. 'We are aware that vandalism in other grounds across Scotland seems to be happening regularly, it's a concern. Unfortunately, this is a number of times at Volunteer Park now. Thank you for your support.'
