Man arrested in Raub for possessing homemade gun
RAUB: A 31-year-old man was arrested after police found a homemade gun in a house he was occupying in Kampung Gali Hilir, near here, yesterday.
A team from the Raub Criminal Investigation Department conducting Op Laras discovered the firearm about 9pm.
Raub police chief Superintendent Mohd Shahril Abdul Rahman said during a search, police found a white sack hidden on top of a cupboard.
"Inside the sack, police found a homemade gun with a wooden handle. But no bullets were recovered from the suspect or inside the premises.
"The firearm is believed to have been used for hunting. The suspect, from Kapar, Selangor, has been remanded until tomorrow to assist in investigations," he said today.
Shahril said the case was being investigated under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 for possessing or carrying firearms without a valid licence or permit.
If convicted, the offender faces up to seven years in prison, a fine of up to RM10,000 or both.
He said the seized gun would be sent to the Armaments Division for further examination to determine its level of serviceability.
Shahril advised the public against keeping homemade firearms as it was a criminal offence.
He urged anyone with information on illegal activities to contact the Raub police headquarters at 09-355 2222.
