Action-packed event launches military celebration

A large military exercise involving high-speed boats and Royal Marines scaling walls has helped mark an upcoming celebration. The event was part of a launch party for Armed Forces Day 2025 in Plymouth, which has been organised to give people the chance to show their support to military personnel on 28 June. Members of the Royal Marines came across Plymouth Sound on high-speed boats before climbing 70ft (21.3m) up the wall of the Royal Citadel on the Hoe to present a flag to the city's Mayor, Tina Tuohy. Deputy Mayor Pauline Murphy said the event in June would be a great chance to show how proud Plymouth was of its strong military links. Ms Murphy said: "This city is a garrison city and we are so proud of our armed forces in the city. "We want to celebrate how proud as a city we are of our armed forces." Organisers of Plymouth's Armed Forces Day said events on 28 June on the Hoe would include parades, demonstrations and displays of military vehicles and equipment. Jerry Josee, the standard-bearer for the National Commando Association, said Armed Forces Day had an "extra special" meaning for current and veteran military personnel. Mr Josee said: "We can say thank you to the civilian population. "We can also show them what we do, how we do it, show them all our equipment and explain how it's used and where we go from there."
