Action-packed event launches military celebration
A large military exercise involving high-speed boats and Royal Marines scaling walls has helped mark an upcoming celebration.
The event was part of a launch party for Armed Forces Day 2025 in Plymouth, which has been organised to give people the chance to show their support to military personnel on 28 June.
Members of the Royal Marines came across Plymouth Sound on high-speed boats before climbing 70ft (21.3m) up the wall of the Royal Citadel on the Hoe to present a flag to the city's Mayor, Tina Tuohy.
Deputy Mayor Pauline Murphy said the event in June would be a great chance to show how proud Plymouth was of its strong military links.
Ms Murphy said: "This city is a garrison city and we are so proud of our armed forces in the city.
"We want to celebrate how proud as a city we are of our armed forces."
Organisers of Plymouth's Armed Forces Day said events on 28 June on the Hoe would include parades, demonstrations and displays of military vehicles and equipment.
Jerry Josee, the standard-bearer for the National Commando Association, said Armed Forces Day had an "extra special" meaning for current and veteran military personnel.
Mr Josee said: "We can say thank you to the civilian population.
"We can also show them what we do, how we do it, show them all our equipment and explain how it's used and where we go from there."

Armed Forces Day 2025: Everything you need to know
Armed Forces Day will soon return to Cleethorpes to celebrate all those who play a part in the armed forces. The free event, organised by a group of volunteers, has been held since 2011 and attracts thousands of people. Along with a Red Arrows display, the event is best known for its parades across the seaside town. This year's event in Cleethorpes will be the national armed forces event. The event includes a full programme of activities including parades, entertainment, flying displays and demonstrations. It was organised by a group of volunteers to promote the work of serving military, reservists, veterans, cadets and their families. The three-day event will take place from Friday, 27 June with a community carnival and then the main parade and events across Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June. Park and Ride Buses will be in place this year which will drop off at the Cleethorpes Memorial Hall. They will leave from the existing stops on the main roads from Grimsby Institute and Origin Way every 15 minutes at peak times. They will be in operation from 16:00 BST on Friday to close on Sunday. It will cost £1.50 for a single journey fare and £8 for a group ticket of up to five people. Shuttle bus This will go between Cleethorpes Leisure Centre and Meridian Showground, provided by vintage buses. The service will run from 12:00 to 17:00 on Friday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:00 on Saturday, and 10:00 to 18:00 on Sunday. The roads listed below will be fully closed over the duration of the Armed Forces weekend apart from emergency vehicle access and business loading. Alexandra Road /High Cliff Road between the junction with Yarra Road and the junction with Brighton Street Seaview Street – Alexandra Road to Cambridge Street (including New Road) Knoll Street between the junction of Cambridge Street and the junction with Alexandra Road There will be no traffic exit from Humber Street or North Street to High Cliff Road for the weekend Organisers said there will also be several specific day closures to allow for set up and operation. Spitfire replica to grace Scarborough seafront for Armed Forces Day
A life-size Spitfire replica will occupy Scarborough's seafront during Armed Forces Day celebrations later this month. Lee Threadgold, artistic director of local arts organisation Animated Objects, which is constructing the replica Mk1 Spitfire, said: "The Spitfire is by far one of the most ambitious projects we've ever undertaken. "It's such a landmark piece of engineering and aviation history that people recognise every curve and facet of the aircraft at first sight, and it's our job to ensure we recreate that faithfully." Scarborough will host a range of tributes, displays, and entertainments for Armed Forces Day, which will take place on Saturday, June 28. The event will run from 11am to 5pm and will include flypasts from the Royal Air Force (which will be sending the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight); a 1930s Tiger Moth; Rich Goodwin, in his jet-powered muscle biplane; the Starlings Aerobatics Team; and squadron leader Nathan Shawyer in an RAF Typhoon. Watch: Apple TV+ drops trailer for documentary series 'The Wild Ones'

Photo courtesy of Apple TV+ June 5 (UPI) -- Apple TV+ released a trailer for upcoming documentary series The Wild Ones, which features a team of wildlife experts traveling to some of the most remote locations in the world to find endangered animals. The trailer, released Thursday, introduces expedition leader Aldo Kane, camera trap specialist Declan Burley and cinematographer Vianet Djenguet as they adventure to locations rarely visited by other humans. "Our mission: to find and film some of the most endangered animals on the planet and help scientists save them," Kane, a former Royal Marines Commando, says in the trailer. The six-part series will see the team venture to Malaysia, Mongolia, Armenia, Indonesia, Canada and Gabon to capture rare video footage of animals including the Malayan tiger, Gobi bear, Caucasian leopard, Javan rhino, North Atlantic right whale and Western lowland gorilla. The Wild Ones is produced by Offspring Films (Earth At Night In Color, Earthsounds) and executive produced by Alex Williamson and Isla Robertson. The first episode of the six-part series premieres July 11 on Apple TV+.
