St. Louis Rapid and Blitz: Gukesh beats Caruana to stand at fourth spot

St Louis (USA):World champion D Gukesh overcame a loss against Leinier Dominguez Perez of the United States to beat the American duo of Wesley So and Fabiano Caruana to stand at fourth spot at the end of the rapid section of the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz, a part of the Grand Chess Tour, here. It was the third successive day that Gukesh started with a loss and still managed a fourth spot, which seems good, with 18 blitz games still to come in the USD 1,75,000 prize-money tournament. Caruana emerged on top in the rapid round with 14 points despite his loss against Gukesh. The American is followed by Armenian-turned-American Levon Aronian, who has 13 points. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France is third on 11 points, a point ahead of Gukesh, who has had a mixed tournament so far. Dominguez, Wesley and Uzbekistan's Nodirbek Abdusattorov share the fifth spot with nine points, two ahead of Liem Le Quang of Vietnam. American Sam Shankland, on five points, is ninth in the field while Grigoriy Oparin has just three points and is placed last. Gukesh had a decent position out of the opening against Dominguez that was mis-played in the final stages of the middle game. As it happened in the game, Dominguez was able to invade the seventh rank that proved crucial. The Indian ace was enjoying a decent position with loads of compensation for a pawn against Wesley So, who could not handle the pressure and caved in tamely in the penultimate round of rapid. Caruana had nearly outplayed Gukesh in the final round but he had to pay a heavy price for an oversight that turned the tide decisively in the latter's favour. Results Round 7: D Gukesh (Ind) lost to Leinier Dominguez Perez (Usa); Levon Aronian (USA) beat Sam Shankland (USA); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb) drew with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra); Grigoriy Oparin (USA) lost to Fabiano Caruana (USA); Liem Le Quang (Vie) drew with Wesley So (USA). D Gukesh Suffers Shock Defeat In St. Louis Rapid And Blitz; Fabiano Caruana In Sole Lead

Reigning World Champion D Gukesh had a relatively unremarkable day at the St. Louis Rapid and Blitz, as he lost one game and drew two, placing him in the middle of the standings in the 10-player tournament, which is part of the Grand Chess Tour. After a shock defeat at the hands of tailender Sam Shankland of United States in the fourth round, Gukesh followed it up with two draws -- against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, the lead changed hands dramatically as highest ranked American in the fray, Fabiano Caruana conceded just a lone draw and defeated overnight leader – the Armenian-turned-American Levon Aronian in the last game of the day to take a two-points lead. Like Gukesh, Aronian was just able to draw two games and lost one. With just three rounds to go in the rapid, Caruana, on 10 points out of a possible 12, seems poised to win this section which would mean that he would have some advantage going ahead in the blitz section which will have a double round-robin comprising 18 rounds in all. Aronian is still a not-far-behind second on eight points, sharing the second spot with Wesley So, also from United States. A close fourth is Vachier-Lagrave on seven points, while Gukesh shares the next spot along side another US import Leinier Dominguez Perez, who is a born Cuban. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan and Liem Le Quang of Vietnam share the seventh spot on five points and another two points behind is Grigoriy Oparin who also changed his federation to United States. The last man standing in the event is Sam Shankland with the lone prize catch of Gukesh that netted him two points. The Indian ace had done well to win two games on the trot after losing to Aronian in the opening round but a tougher opponent awaited him in the second round. Against Shankland, Gukesh tried to go for complications but they backfired as the American is known for his decent tactical skills and won a piece with some precise calculation in the middle game. Gukesh did not push for more against Vachier-Lagrave and settled for a draw and against Abdusattorov he did not get many chances as the players headed to a king versus king position after 60 moves. Results round 4: Leinier Dominguez Perez (Usa( draw with Levon Aronian (Usa); Sam Shankland (Usa) beat D Gukesh (Ind); Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb) beat Grigoriy Oparin (Usa); Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Fra) drew with Liem Le Quang (Vie); Wesley So (Usa) drew with Fabiano Caruana (Usa). Round 5: Gukesh drew with Vachier-Lagrave; Wesley drew with Aronian; Caruana beat Shankland; Liem drew with Abdusattorov; Dominguez drew with Oparin. Round 6: Abdusattorov drew with Gukesh; Caruana beat Aronian; Shankland lost to Vachier-Lagrave; Liem drew with Dominguez; Wesley beat Oparin. Standing after round 6: 1. Caruana (10); 2-3. Aronian, Wesley (8 each); 4. Vachier-Lagrave (7); 5-6. Gukesh, Dominguez (6 each); 7-8: Liem, Abdusattorov (5 each); 9. Oparin (3) 10. Shankland (2).

Freestyle Grand Slam: Arjun Erigaisi bows out in semis after loss to Aronian

Last Updated: Las Vegas (USA), Jul 19 (PTI) Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi's dream run at the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam ended in the semifinals after a 0-2 defeat to Armenian-turned-American Levon Aronian here. Erigaisi, who became the first Indian to reach the last four stage of the Freestyle Grand Slam with a stellar performance, ran out of steam in the match up against Aronian who is finding his magical touch back in the game. After beating Magnus Carlsen in the play-off for a top-four spot in the prelims and Hikaru Nakamura in the quarterfinals, Arjun failed to convert his chances in the first game. Aronian, despite being in a difficult position, held firm and was rewarded when Arjun could not capitalise on his advantage. In the return game, with Aronian needing only a draw to advance, he played subtly to gain a slight advantage out of the opening. As the game settled into a balanced position, it seemed headed for a draw, but Arjun, needing a win to stay in the match, took unwarranted risks that cost him dearly. Hans Moke Niemann of the United States was the other player to reach the finals, defeating compatriot Fabiano Caruana. Niemann arrived slightly late for the first game but managed to draw it. Two more draws followed before the younger American outmanoeuvred Caruana with some finely crafted middlegame play. R Praggnanandhaa, who had bowed out of the title race, defeated Vincent Keymer of Germany in the playoff for 3rd-8th place. Praggnanandhaa drew the first game as Black and outplayed Keymer in the return game to register a 1.5-0.5 victory. World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen also won by the same margin against Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan. In other matches, Wesley So of the United States defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan 3-1, while in an all-American duel, Hikaru Nakamura crushed Leinier Dominguez Perez 2-0. Results Semifinals: Arjun Erigaisi (Ind) lost to Levon Aronian (Usa) 0-2; Fabiano Caruana (Usa) lost to Hans Moke Niemann (Usa) 1.5-2.5 Other results: Lenier Dominguez Perez (Usa) lost to Hikaru Nakamura (Usa) 0-2; Magnus Carlsen (Nor) beat Javokhir Sindarov (Uzb) 1.5-0.5; R Praggnanandhaa beat Vincent Keymer 1.5-0.5; Wesley So (Usa) beat Nodirbek Abdusattorov (Uzb) 3-1.
