Gaurav Gogoi slams Assam government's arms license policy near border areas
Assam Congress President and Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday came down heavily on the Assam Government's recent decision to grant arms licenses to civilians residing in border and remote termed the policy "highly condemnable" and accused the ruling BJP government of promoting a strategy that prioritises weapons over the essential needs of the to the media, Gogoi said, "People of Assam want water, employment, education, and medical facilities, not guns." He argued that the controversial move, instead of protecting citizens, may lead to an increase in fake encounters, citing recent Supreme Court criticism over alleged police excesses in Gogoi warned that such a policy could be misused to arm workers aligned with the BJP and RSS, potentially endangering innocent businessmen and shopkeepers in the region.'Under the new policy, more fake encounetrs can take place. The honest shopkeepers there, the businessmen there will face difficulties in the days to come. All these guns will go to BJP and RSS workers. Ferozepur police nabs 4 drug smugglers with 4.25kg heroine and drug money
FEROZEPUR: In a drive against drugs, Ferozepur police have successfully intercepted a major drug smuggling operation by arresting four drug smugglers with 4.25kg heroin and seizing a drug money of 1.97 lakh, here on Monday. Giving details, Bhupinder Singh Sidhu, senior superintendent of police, Ferozepur said that acting on a crucial tip-off, the CIA wing of Ferozepur police laid a trap and intercepted a vehicle, leading to the arrest of four drug smugglers, identified as Swaran Singh, a resident of Kamale Wala village, Gurwant Singh of Maste Wala, Sandeep Singh of Hazara Ram Singh Wala and Manpreet Singh from Nurpur village in Ferozeput. 'During search of the intercepted vehicle, police recovered 4.225 kg of heroin, worth Rs 22 crore along with 1.97 Lakh drug money from the accused. The police impounded the car being used for smuggling the contraband,' he added. Gurwant Singh has a criminal past with five cases registered against him, including under the Arms and NDPS Acts. 4 held with 4.25kg heroin, ₹1.97 lakh in drug money in Punjab's Ferozepur
The Ferozepur police arrested four people with 4.25kg of heroin and ₹1.97 lakh in drug money on Monday. Senior superintendent of police Bhupinder Singh Sidhu identified the four accused as Swaran Singh, 20, of Kamale Wala village, Gurwant Singh, 30, of Maste Wala, Sandeep Singh, 23, of Hazara Ram Singh Wala and Manpreet Singh, 27, from Nurpur village, all in Ferozepur district. The police impounded the car being used for smuggling the contraband. Gurwant Singh has a criminal past with five cases registered against him, including under the Arms and NDPS Acts. Manpreet also has two prior cases, including one under the NDPS Act, in which 80g of heroin was recovered from him, the SSP said. In a separate case on Sunday, police arrested Pathi, 22, of Isa Nagari in Makhu, Ferozepur. He was found in possession of a country-made .315 bore pistol and a live cartridge.

Ludhiana: Two arrested with 1kg heroin, illegal weapons
Wanted by the police in a murder case, two accused landed in a police net in two separate actions. The police recovered 1kg heroin and two illegal weapons from his possession. The accused has been identified as Gagan Grover alias Himanshu of Mohalla New Satguru Nagar, Lohara Road and Jatinder Singh alias Shanki of Sahibzada Fateh Singh Nagar. Inspector Beant Juneja, in-charge at CIA staff 2, stated that in the first case the police arrested the accused near Jhabewal village following a tip-off. When frisked the police recovered 230 gm heroin and an illegal weapon from his Hyundai Creta car. Following the information provided by the accused, the police recovered 790 gm more heroin from his residence. A case under Sections 21, 29, 61, 85 of NDPS Act, Sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms Act has been lodged against the accused at the Jamalpur Police Station. In the second case, the CIA Staff 2 police arrested Jatinder Singh of Sahibzada Fateh Singh Nagar and recovered an illegal weapon from his possession. A case under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of Arms act was registered at the Daba Police Station. The inspector added that the accused is already facing trial in seven cases –including murder, attempt to murder, drug peddling and assault. He was wanted by Daba police in a murder case lodged against him on September 18, 2024 after a 25-year-old man Daljit Singh, alias Kaka, a resident of Preet Nagar, Shimlapuri had died in a clash. The victim had gone to visit his friend Jagroop Singh in Mohalla Fateh Singh Nagar, where they indulged in an argument with the accused, which soon escalated into a scuffle. Stones were thrown, and swords were drawn as the groups clashed violently. Daljit had suffered severe injuries, who later died. Grover and Jatinder Singh were avoiding police for the past seven months.
