Construction on Arnold Palmer Regional Airport's new terminal hits turbulence
While the new terminal at Pittsburgh International Airport is nearing completion, work is also underway on a new terminal at the Arnold Palmer Regional Airport in Unity Township. But their construction project has hit a little bit of turbulence in the past few weeks, stemming from the slow delivery of building supplies. "Delayed" is not a term anyone loves to hear at an airport. But as Gabe Monzo, the executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority, says, "delayed" is a term that sometimes just comes with the aviation territory, even when you are talking about delays with the construction of a new 32,000 square foot terminal building and the steel needed to complete it. "It's domestic steel, it is not imported, so it's going to take a while," Monzo said. "We deal with it accordingly and we stop the project, and we will carry it on once the steel arrives. We are anticipating that within a month or so it should be here." Monzo says he is not sure why there is a backup on the steel delivery, but he says the construction of this new terminal is still in good shape, with a phase one completion now on track for March of next year instead of December this year. A full construction completion of all phases is still looking at an on-time arrival in 2027. The new terminal building is landing with a price tag of around $22 million that Monzo says has been fully funded, and it is one of three construction projects at the airport right now. The other two are a taxiway improvement project that should be wrapping up at the end of this year and the recently completed elevator installation on their 65-foot tower. Despite all the work going on, however, Monzo says their daily flights on Spirit Airlines to Orlando and Myrtle Beach, as well as their twice-weekly flights on Spirit to Fort Lauderdale, have not been affected. He says they really need the new terminal space sooner rather than later because Arnold Palmer has become such a popular place to fly in and out of. "You got to remember that when you are landing an Airbus, you have 175 people getting off and 175 people getting on," said Monzo. "So, it's 350 people in the terminal building and right now our terminal building is rather small for 350 people to be walking around."

It's going to be a pleasant day in the Pittsburgh area before another chance for severe weather arrives tomorrow
It's going to be a pleasant day today in the Pittsburgh area before another chance for severe weather arrives tomorrow. Any Alert Days Ahead? Potential for one on Thursday evening to Friday. May issue a First Alert Weather Day later this morning. Timing is tricky with the storms coming through in the overnight hours. Aware: Yesterday, the Pittsburgh airport recorded a thunderstorm-fueled wind gust of 71mph. The Arnold Palmer Regional Airport recorded a 79mph wind gust. Wow! What a day yesterday. Storms were strong enough to have a number of school cancellations today as communities clean up from nasty storms that moved through yesterday. As of 5a on Wednesday morning, power outages across the area were around 400 thousand. Storm reports yesterday topped 250. Unfortunately, 2 people have also died due to the storm, with one man dying after trying to clear live power lines. If cleaning up today, do not get close to downed power lines. Please call 911. Also just another reminder to treat out-of-service traffic lights as four-way stops. Using myself as an example, half of the traffic lights were out on my trip into work. At least the weather will be pleasant for the clean-up efforts today. Highs should hit the low 70s with low humidity levels. Morning temperatures did dip into the 40s in most places. Skies will be sunny with light winds coming in out of the northwest at around 5mph. I have noon temperatures in the low 60s. Storm chances return to the area on Thursday afternoon. We may see some isolated showers or a general storm in the morning as a warm front slides through. With us in the 'warm sector' all day, fast-moving individual cells well in front of the cold front will begin to move through during the afternoon, with rain and storms continuing through the evening hours. Lightning and gusty straight-line winds are the biggest concern on Thursday. More rain is expected on Friday into Saturday. The Pittsburgh Kids' Marathon will likely have to deal with both rain and windy conditions. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos

Royal Canadian Snowbirds to headline 2025 Westmoreland International Airshow
The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be the headline performers at the 2025 Westmoreland International Airshow later this year, it was announced Wednesday by the Westmoreland County Airport Authority. The event will be held on June 21-22, 2025, at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. The Snowbirds last flew at the Westmoreland County show in 2019. They will again be flying nine CT-114 Tutor jet aircraft, according to a news release from the Westmoreland County Airport Authority. "It was unexpected but certainly very welcome," said Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo. "We are ramping up our planning and looking forward to a wonderful event." The two-day show will feature static aircraft displays, several vendors, and other attractions. Monzo said this year's show marks the 100th anniversary of airshows held at the airport. All performances are pending government approval.

Arnold Palmer Regional Airport seeing travel rebound after Spirit service to Orlando returns
The Arnold Palmer Regional Airport near Latrobe is reporting an uptick in the number of flights that are being offered to customers. The Westmoreland County Airport Authority announced Thursday that daily commercial flights have resumed at the Unity Township airport. Prior to this week, Spirit Airlines had only been flying to and from Orlando, Florida four days per week, but those flights are now traveling daily. "This is an encouraging sign that Spirit is committed to the Latrobe service and hopefully working toward a strong recovery of its operation," said Gabe Monzo, executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority. "We are excited to be a part of it." The airport authority says the cutbacks in service that had limited flights to four days per week were due to Spirit coming out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy when they had a failed merger with JetBlue Airways last year. Flights between Arnold Palmer Regional Airport and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina are expected to resume on Spirit this spring, also.
