📸 More goalkeeper woes for United, shaky start to the new season
Even in the new season, Manchester United is haunted by old demons. It took less than 15 minutes for the first blunder in the league opener against Arsenal a corner, Riccardo Calafiori nudged the ball over the line. A painfully familiar sight for Ruben Amorim's team. Previously, United's keeper Altay Bayindir failed to clear the ball. On the contrary: The nominal number two of the Red Devils fumbled past the ball, allowing the early deficit. 📸 Michael Regan - 2025 Getty Images This makes it difficult for the Turk to take over the regular spot from the injured André Onana, who has been under criticism for some time due to several mistakes last season. Odegaard responds to Adams' demands for Rice's Arsenal captaincy switch
Martin Odegaard has robustly defended his captaincy at Arsenal following sharp criticism from Tony Adams. The club legend targeted Odegaard, 26, by insisting that the Gunners won't claim the Premier League crown whilst he remains skipper. The former Arsenal captain called on Mikel Arteta to hand the armband to teammate Declan Rice, arguing that such a switch would give Odegaard greater attacking licence. However, Adams won't see his wish fulfilled after the squad emphatically backed the Norwegian to continue as captain for the 2025-26 campaign. Odegaard has now hit back at Adams in an interview before Sunday's season opener away to Manchester United. When quizzed about his leadership approach, the midfielder told Sky Sports: "It's a lot to be fair. It's a lot of small things. It's hard to describe it, it's more like a constant role you do. "There's always these small things you have to do. In general it's just how I see it is to get the best out of the team and how to give the team the right mindset. Help the players around you, get the best mindset in everyone. "I think before the game just on the pitch I do a little one (team talk) and inside the dressing room we have different people talking. It's not just me there's a lot of people sharing the responsibility and the manager does a lot as well. It's a shared thing. It's not just me all the time." (Image: Alex Burstow/Arsenal FC via Getty Images) Adams admitted during an event for Irish Independent that Odegaard wasn't his 'kind' of captain. "The call is to make Declan Rice the captain," the ex-Gunners defender began in a plea to Arteta. "I think Declan is my kind of captain, and it might free Odegaard up to play with a bit more freedom. Every now and again as a manager, you have to put someone who reflects you, who reflects the football club that you think can actually take you to the next level. "He (Arteta) has got an opportunity this year to actually turn into a winner. To win league titles, you have to be a [Jurgen] Klopp, you have to be a [Sir Alex] Ferguson. You have to lead by example, you have to be a winner, you have to go about your business. And that reflects in your captain. (Image: Stuart MacFarlane/Arsenal FC via Getty Images) "And I'm seeing Declan Rice as a captain but I'm saying to Arteta: Come on, step up now. It's your time to be a winning manager and a fantastic manager, because you're not going to win the league with Odegaard as captain." Arteta, though, believes that there's 'no question' that Odegaard should be captain. "Well my opinion is clear and it's not just my opinion, it's all the staff and especially the players." the Gunners boss explained. "I asked them to vote the captain and I got the result yesterday. And by a mile, by a big, big 100 miles, everybody choosing the same person, which is Martin Odegaard, and which is the most clear sign that you can have. "It's how they feel about who has to be their captain to defend, improve and win the matches that we want to win. So I think there's no question about that."

Manchester United vs Arsenal: H2H stats This will be the 243rd meeting between the two clubs, with Manchester United leading with 99 wins compared to Arsenal's 89 victories. Recent Premier League clashes have favored Arsenal, who won 3 of the last 5 matches, including a 2-0 victory in December 2024. The teams drew 1-1 on March 9, 2025. Team news and preview Manchester United, under the management of Ruben Amorim, have bolstered their squad with exciting new signings like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko to strengthen their attack. Their promising pre-season victories against West Ham, Bournemouth, and Fiorentina have raised hopes for a strong start to the season. United are expected to adopt a 3-4-2-1 formation, aiming to control midfield and leverage their attacking reinforcements at home. Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez were seen in the practice session. Though Onana might be able to start, there is very little chance the Argentine defender will be able to start in a big match like this. Joshua Zirkzee and Noussair Mazraoui did not play a single game of the preseason tour and have been monitored since then. Their availability for this match is still in doubt. Meanwhile, Arsenal, the runners-up of the 2024-25 Premier League season, have also had a solid pre-season with wins over AC Milan, Newcastle, and Athletic Club. They have integrated new talents such as Noni Madueke and Viktor Gyokeres to add depth and versatility. Gabriel Jesus is already out due to injury. Along with him, Leandro Trossard is doubtful for this fixture. So, all eyes will be on Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard to lead the attack alongside new signing Martin Zubimendi. Possible lineups Manchester United: Bayındır, Yoro, de Ligt, Shaw, Diallo, Ugarte, Fernandes, Dorgu, Mbeumo, Šeško, Cunha. Arsenal: Raya, Timber, Saliba, Gabriel, Lewis-Skelly, Zubimendi, Rice, Saka, Ødegaard, Martinelli, Gyökeres

£2.5million lost to football ticket fraudsters in last two seasons
Football fans are being urged to watch out for scams when buying match tickets for the upcoming Premier League season, as a bank estimates that £2.5 million has been lost in recent years. More than 2,400 cases of football ticket fraud were reported by Lloyds customers over the past two seasons, with total losses topping £500,000. The bank estimates that nationally there are likely to have been at least 12,000 victims since the start of the 2023/24 season, with more than £2.5 million stolen by fraudsters. Victims lost an average of £218 each last season, according to the bank. Supporters of Liverpool are most likely to have been affected, followed by fans of Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City, Lloyds' figures indicated. Cases also involved fans of Celtic and Rangers, while Wrexham AFC also featured in the data. Supporters aged 25 to 34 were the most common victims, making up 28 per cent of cases, closely followed by 18 to 24-year-olds (26 per cent). The government has joined Lloyds to issue a warning to supporters as part of its Stop! Think Fraud campaign. Around three-quarters (76 per cent) of football ticket fraud cases last season started on social media, according to Lloyds' data. Scammers post fake adverts or listings on social media, offering tickets at discounted prices or for sold-out games. Victims are asked to pay upfront – often by bank transfer – but the tickets do not arrive and the fraudster disappears. Liz Ziegler, fraud prevention director at Lloyds, said: 'It's easy to get swept up in the buzz of a new season, but scammers are banking on that excitement. 'With demand for tickets often outstripping supply, fraudsters know they can trick fans into paying for tickets that simply don't exist.' Lord Hanson, minister for fraud at the Home Office, said: 'Fraud is a ruthless crime that preys on our passions, our trust and our excitement. 'As the nation gears up for the new football season, so too do fraudsters, waiting to take advantage of loyal fans searching for tickets. 'More than three-quarters of football ticket scams last season started on social media, with what seem like genuine 'first come, first served' offers all too often designed to rip off desperate fans. 'That's why we urge all football supporters hunting for tickets to Stop! Think Fraud. Stay alert and only buy directly from the clubs, their official partners and legitimate resale outlets. 'None of us wants to miss a big game, but that will feel 10 times worse if you've also handed hundreds of pounds to a fraudster for a ticket you'll never see.' Sajni Shah, a money expert at Compare the Market, said: 'Stay alert to red flags like overly cheap tickets being sold over social media or sellers pushing you to make fast payments via online platforms. If something feels too good to be true, it probably is.' Here are some tips from Lloyds for football supporters to protect themselves from ticket scams: Do not let 'fomo' (fear of missing out) make you rush into a decision you will later regret. Take a moment to stop, think, and check if the offer is genuine. Stick to official sources. Buy tickets directly from official Premier League club websites, ticket offices or their authorised partners. The Premier League website has a safe-buying guide to help fans when buying tickets. Do not move away from an official payment platform to make a direct payment via bank transfer or virtual currency. Use the website's recommended payment methods.
