Joe Coyle's memorable week: The multi-talented 16-year-old who scored for Newtonmore then bagged a double for Ross County's first team

Sixteen-year-old Joe Coyle is enjoying quite the week – scoring big goals across two different sports. Already a rising talent within the first-team at Newtonmore Shinty Club, he scored his team's first goal in Saturday's 6-1 Premiership win against Kyles Athletic, which places them just one point adrift of leaders Fort William. Then, on Tuesday, he stepped off the bench for Ross County Football Club to score twice in the Dingwall side's thumping 8-0 Premier Sports Cup win against League Two opponents Edinburgh City. Coyle is believed to be the youngest County scorer in an SPFL match, with Ross Jack scoring for the club as a 15-year-old in the Highland League in 1974. Fans are already drawing comparisons between professional golfer Robert MacIntyre, the US Open runner-up this year, who also plays when he can for his home town shinty side Oban Celtic. Newtonmore first-team boss Peter Ross has often referred to Coyle as a 'real talent', having watched him be part of highly successful primary, under-14, under-17 sides, the latter of which he is still firmly part of. His contribution of 10 goals this year for the senior side is helping keep More in the chase for honours. That extends to this Saturday when they lock horns with local rivals Kingussie in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-final in Beauly for the right to meet either Oban Camanachd or Glasgow Mid Argyll in this season's final. However, Ross County's midweek victory means they have a must-win Premier Sports Cup match against Partick Thistle on Saturday – only a victory will take the Championship team into the knockout stages of the competition. Coyle is one of eight players who last week signed full-time apprenticeships at County along with midfielder Copeland Thain, Ollie Lamont, Rio Hastings, Lewis Mackay, Eoin Munro, Torran Lambie and Greg Ferguson. Ross acknowledges that County will now take top billing for Coyle as a result, but says the teenager deserves his shot at making the mark in football's Scottish Championship. He said: 'We're all very pleased for Joe. 'Joe and his family have worked very hard for this. There's a lot of travelling involved to attend training over the years. We hope it all goes very well for him. 'Football is Joe's job now and we always knew this was coming but, as a club, we have other players who can step in and play as Joe carries on with his football career.' Coyle is also in the Scotland under-17 squad for their upcoming shinty/hurling challenge matches in Ireland next month. There's plenty of pride locally for Coyle, who has just left Kingussie High School, whose head teacher Gavin Murphy extended his well wishes to an all-round star pupil. He said: 'Joe has just left school after earning his professional contract at Ross County. 'He's a great lad, a genuine, polite, hard-working boy. I'm delighted for him. He's naturally talented at football and shinty. It's fantastic that he's doing so well in both sports. 'He showed talent throughout the years in any sport, whether it was basketball, hockey, athletics – he's always been a strong runner and jumper. He's strong, with such physical attributes and I'm not surprised he's been offered the contract at Ross County. 'It looks like he'll have to give up shinty to focus on football. I didn't even realise he'd bagged a brace for Ross County, which was great to see. 'As a school, we're unfortunate to now lose him – it's bittersweet in a way. It would have been great for him to carry on to S5-S6, but he's taken the decision which I think is in his best interests. 'He's got really supportive family and friends around him and he's so well grounded. 'At 16, when you're given that opportunity in front of you to sign for Ross County, he had to go for it.' Ross County manager Don Cowie sensed Coyle was ready for his debut – and was rewarded with two first-team debut goals. A Ronan Hale hat-trick, a Jay Henderson brace and a strike from Kieran Phillips was added to be a late double from 16-year-old Coyle on his senior debut in that 8-0 rout of Edinburgh City. There was also a competitive debut from the bench on Tuesday for 17-year-old midfielder Thain, who recently impressively replaced captain Connor Randall when he was injured in pre-season against Clachnacuddin. While Coyle hit the net twice, Thain provided an assist and Cowie spelled out how important it was for the teenagers to have shown fans a glimpse of their potential. He said: 'It was a proud moment for Joe and Copeland and their families. I spoke about it afterwards in front of the rest of the players. It should not be underestimated what they have achieved tonight, making that step. 'They still have so much more growth in them and so much hard work to come. 'Copeland especially has really impressed all of us in pre-season. You hope the game goes the way it did so we can get him on the pitch to allow him to get that taste of it. He deserved that. 'We didn't see as much of Joe in pre-season as he was on holiday and he came back a bit later, but I had him in the squad at the end of last season because he impresses me every time I see him within the youth set-up. 'I watched him again for the under-17s on Sunday and that made my mind up that I wanted him to be involved tonight. 'I know when he comes on, he will be a threat. The way he took his two goals proved that.'

Shinty: Oban Camanachd storm to victory in Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final

Oban Camanachd flexed their muscles, displaying the depth of their fully fit squad, before running out 6-1 winners over Kyles Athletic in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup final at Peterson Park. Daniel MacVicar's shot low across the keeper from the right to put the Oban side ahead before Malcolm Clark touched Lorne Dickie's hit-in home to make it 2-0 at the turnaround. James Pringle lost his marker as he ran left before pulling a goal back, but Ross Macmillan sprinted onto Daniel MacVicar's ball forward to beat keeper Iain MacFarlane to make it 3-1. Substitute Daniel Maccuish and Ross Campbell put gloss on the win. Daniel Maccuish juggled the ball by defender and keeper for a brilliant individual effort before Ross Campbell hammered home two fine strikes from the left. Oban Camanachd captain Daniel MacVicar was outstanding throughout, and he stepped forward to collect shinty's oldest trophy from Glasgow Celtic Society president Donald Fletcher. This was Oban Camanachd's third successive Celtic success, their longest winning run since they took south shinty's main prize for eight successive seasons between 1987 and 1994. Oban Camanachd boss Daniel Cameron has now won this trophy as player, captain and manager and he said: 'I knew we had the depth of squad today and that's something we haven't had this season. 'To have the luxury of bringing on a Scottish international like Daniel MacCuish shows where the squad is at just now. 'At the start of the season, people said we'd struggle after losing 6 or 7 players, but we'll let people talk. We have our own in-house goals, and we'll keep them to ourselves, but they will be our focus.' Kingussie will meet Newtonmore in the Artemis Macaulay Cup semi-finals after both won their last-eight ties. Dylan Borthwick gave Kingussie an early lead at Lovat before Greg Matheson levelled. Dylan Borthwick scored again, but Callum Cruden blasted home a disputed penalty to make it 2-2. Savio Genini chipped in with another vital goal, scoring the winner with five minutes remaining. Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: 'We were flying during the first half-hour and could have been well ahead but for their keeper Ronan Macmillan. 'The second half was more even so it was a relief to see Savio's shot hit the net. The semi-final should be a cracker.' It took extra-time before Newtonmore saw off Skye 3-1. The Islanders led through Archie Millar, but Iain Robinson equalised soon after. Goals in the second half of extra-time from Conor Jones and Iain Robinson again sent More through. Manager Peter Ross said: 'I thought we'd more pressure but Skye were always dangerous. 'They aren't far away from being a side that can win things. We won it with a wonder save from Kenny Ross from Dan MacDonald and a wonder goal from Conor Jones after good play from Declan Brannan who got stronger and stronger as the tie went on.' Oban Camanachd face Glasgow Mid Argyll in the other semi-final. Fort William are two points clear at the top of the Mowi Premiership after beating Kinlochshiel 3-1. Arron Jack put Shiel ahead but Lachie Shaw equalised before half-time. Hamish Shaw put the Fort ahead soon after the restart and a late second from Lachie Shaw sealed victory. Fort William co-manager Alan Knox said: 'We were against the wind during an even first half, but we played some lovely shinty after that and dominated from there. I thought their keeper Josh Grant made some outstanding saves.' Kilmallie go third in the Mowi National Division after beating Glenurquhart 2-1. Full forward Martin Stewart dropped deep to lay the ball off to Ben MacKinnon who sent a blistering 30-yard strike by Stuart MacKintosh in the visiting goal to put Kilmallie ahead. Martin Stewart was again the provider as Archie MacNiven smashed home the second from the left. Daniel Maclean pulled a goal back, but it wasn't enough.

Shinty: Skye inflict a first defeat of the season on Fort William while Newtonmore edge Beauly

Had Skye's Archie Millar obeyed doctor's orders, he wouldn't have featured in the Artemis Macaulay Cup first round tie at Fort William. But fortunately for the islanders he instead came off the bench to give Skye a 2-1 win. Skye forwards Ross Gordon, Neil MacVicar, Jamie Gillies and Dan MacDonald all hit the frame of the goal during a blistering opening 20-minute spell, but Fort William led after 81 minutes through Lachie Shaw. Ross Gordon levelled with the final hit of the game before Millar's 95-minute winner inflicted Fort's first defeat of the season. Skye boss Kenny MacLeod said: 'Archie wasn't supposed to play. He's probably three weeks away but Ruaraidh MacLeod was a late-call-off as he's moving house so we asked Archie to give us some minutes. 'It was heart-in-the-mouth stuff but when they went ahead, I said I'd rather go for it, even if it meant we lost 5-0, so we pushed William MacKinnon up front and he caused chaos, helping set up Ross who turned his man to level. 'This is the identity I want from the boys.' Archie Millar said: 'I'm absolutely delighted to be back and to score the winner. 'The win's a real boost for us all and we've now won two games on the bounce which is massive as we try to put a run together. 'With a full squad, who knows what we could achieve.' Substitutes Matthew Sloss and Joe Coyle combined with just 11 minutes remaining as Coyle skipped by a defender before sweeping the ball home to give Newtonmore a 1-0 win over Beauly. More manager Peter Ross said: 'We had all the first half pressure and played good shinty, but their keeper Lee Dunbar was exceptional. We didn't have a bad player and Joe Coyle showed he's that yard ahead of many players. 'I also thought referee Jamie MacPherson gave possibly one of the best displays I've seen over recent years. He was very clear; he kept up with play and played advantage and there were no bookings.' Campbell Watt gave Inveraray a 40-minute lead against Glasgow Mid Argyll, but a late show from the Glasgow side saw Ross Brown level on 86 minutes before John Sweeney sealed a 2-1 victory in the final minute. Scott Harvey's first half double earned Bute a 2-1 win at Col Glen. Neilly McNaughton countered, but Bute held on despite having Rory McDonald red-carded 10 minutes from time. The quarter-final parings are: Bute v Oban Camanachd, Kyles Athletic v Glasgow Mid Argyll, Lovat v Kingussie, Newtonmore v Skye. Manager's son Liam Borthwick impressed, scoring in the opening minute and then the final minute to confirm Kingussie's 2-0 win at Caberfeidh, sending them two points clear at the Mowi Premiership summit. Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: 'Ruaridh Anderson hurt his ankle last week. 'We thought he'd be fine but it's still really sore, so Liam started at wing forward and played very well. 'His first goal came within 16 seconds, but we couldn't get going after that, so I was happy to get in 1-0 ahead at half-time. 'We totally dominated the second half but just couldn't get that second goal to kill the game. They came back into it in last 10 minutes when it could have gone either way, so I was so glad to see Liam score right at the end.' Caberfeidh manager Garry Reid added: 'I'm proud of how my players reacted after losing such an early goal.' Mowi National Division leaders Lochaber recovered from 4-2 down to beat Kilmallie 5-4. Kilmallie led through Innes Blackhall after two minutes, but Findlay MacDonald levelled from the restart. Ben Delaney put Lochaber in front, but Calum MacDougall's treble had Kilmallie 4-2 ahead with half-an-hour remaining. However, Ben Delaney's second and Stuart Callison's brace made it Lochaber's day. Glenurquhart beat neighbours Strathglass 5-1. Charlie MacLeod grabbed a hat-trick and Daniel MacLean and Finlay Robertson the others. Steven Hyslop countered.

Shinty: Newtonmore boss hoping Macaulay Cup tie can kickstart season

Newtonmore are looking for a good cup run as they welcome Beauly in the Artemis Macaulay Cup first round. More manager Peter Ross said: 'It's been a bit of an up-and-down season for us so far. 'It started well against Caberfeidh, but we've been unlucky in a couple of games, and I'd say the Skye match was the only one where we really deserved to lose. 'That said, you make your own luck in this game. We want to have good cup runs and the Beauly game presents that opportunity. 'Drew MacDonald went over his ankle in training, so we'll assess him nearer the time and Conor Jones is still struggling after being hit on the knee. 'Brodie MacBean is back playing with the second team after injury though, and I'm delighted about that. He got good minutes under his belt against Inverness last week and he's a player who can light up games.' Beauly lost 2-0 to Newtonmore in the league a fortnight ago and are in the process of introducing several promising players into their squad. Euan Mccormick misses out as he completes his 5-game suspension. Fort William and Skye Camanachd both have injury concerns ahead of their tie. The Fort hope Scottish international Lachie Shaw will be able to play with a protective glove. Assistant manager Alan Knox said: 'Lachie broke his thumb against Kingussie three weeks ago. 'It's not a bad break but he has to wear a brace for a couple of weeks, but he should be fine for Saturday. 'Cam Stephen and Johnny Forster should also return and hopefully Craig MacDonald too if his hamstring allows.' Skye boss Kenny MacLeod added: 'Archie Millar is making good progress from his arm break and James Morrison, who has also missed the last couple of weeks, is getting there too. They won't be ready for this week, but they have a chance of featuring against Newtonmore the week after.' Ross Gordon suffered a knock in the win over Beauly the last Saturday, but he is fit to play. Inveraray host Glasgow Mid Argyll and there's another all-National Division tie between Col Glen and Bute. Kyles Athletic reached the quarter-finals without striking a ball as an injury-crisis has left Aberdour depleted. An Aberdour spokesperson said: 'This is not a decision we've taken lightly, and we waited until midweek to see the extent of the injuries. 'We're already thin on the ground but despite this, we've done our utmost to fulfil all fixtures but unfortunately are unable to do so this weekend.' Oban Camanachd also received a walk-over as Kilmory were unable to fulfil their tie. Kingussie have the chance to go clear at the top of the table when they host Caberfeidh in the Mowi Premiership's only fixture. Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick said: 'We're getting to the interesting part of the season now and from our point of view, things are looking good, and we're slowly getting players back. 'Fraser Munro returns to the squad against Caberfeidh whilst Lee Bain completed training this week and he'll get some game time with our second team. 'We'll still be without Rory MacKeachan and Zander Michie though.' Caberfeidh's Ben MacDonald is ruled out through work commitments. Cabers were the last team to beat Kingussie and that was in a Mowi Premiership fixture at Castle Leod on 23 September 2023 when Craig Morrison's goal was all that separated the sides. Mowi National Division leaders Lochaber have a derby against Kilmallie while there is also a derby between Glenurquhart and Strathglass. WCA Mowi Premier League leaders Badenoch suffered their first defeat of the season, going down 3-2 at Lochaber. Leah Maxtone scored twice for Lochaber with Mairi Duncan getting the other. Ellie Miller and Hope Borthwick replied. Four-goal Holly Maclean helped Skye beat Inverness 5-0. Kirsty Dibble got the other. Badenoch lead second placed Skye by two points and they host Inverness this weekend
